alex_hitchins··on Remembering Planet Source Code: Sharing Code Before GitHub Made It Easy
This was my first website visit of the day, every day back then.

I still remember seeing a post with 'XP style' buttons for VB6 that I used on a Windows Server 2000 application and thought it was the bees knees.

Another I recal was a PSC code scanning tool, written itself in VB6.

Happy happy times.

alex_hitchins··on Unlock Articles with Paywallskip
I'm sure there was a startup a few years ago trying to achieve this. I can't recall the name sadly, it was 10+ years ago. Agar or something perhaps?

I believe you topped up a balance and if the site supported it could access per-article resouces for a one off fee. For this to really work it needs to be site independant however.

alex_hitchins··on RAD Basic – Compatible with Visual Basic 6 projects
Indeed, it's come along way and I'm not knocking it.

Point is thought this was there out the box with VB.

alex_hitchins··on RAD Basic – Compatible with Visual Basic 6 projects
If I recall correctly, you could write new code during debugging sessions, move the pointer to it and run it. Very dynamic. We can now do some of these things in VS or other tools with .Net, however VB was much more powerful in this regard. I can only recall there being one statement that required a rebuild - was it CreateObject or similar?
alex_hitchins··on RAD Basic – Compatible with Visual Basic 6 projects
Thing is it was never a prototype, always the end product. Had a lot of Access systems that were created by people in their roles that got widespread use then grandfathered into general dev support too. These were always horrible but too big to change.

Louis Rossmann - He's done some good analysis around rents in NYC.
alex_hitchins··on OBS Studio 26.0
Surely this enables them to just keep up, rather than having the freedom to innovate?
alex_hitchins··on Ask HN: What is your favorite motto?

alex_hitchins··on Alcoholics Anonymous vs. other approaches: the evidence is now in
I came here to say the same (but undoubtedly not nearly as well as yourself).

It was the religious stuff that put me off completely. Being in a group of people all there with a common cause I felt was quite powerful. Hearing shared experiences from the community was helpful. I just couldn't pretend I was OK with peddling any form of faith.

alex_hitchins··on Ask HN: A major USA bank is storing passwords in cleartext – what to do?
With my bank, the telephone banking password is very different from the one you use to log in.
alex_hitchins··on Faces of Open Source
There he is! I just didn't recognize him. Thanks for pointing him out. I was feeling quite aggrieved on his behalf there!
alex_hitchins··on Faces of Open Source
Is it not missing Eric S. Raymond?

EDIT : Yes, he is there - just didn't recognise him.

alex_hitchins··on Ask HN: What happens after no-deal Brexit?
I hope so as I'd be one of those applying and moving. The whole Brexit mess is very very depressing. I hope the mess we are making goes to bolster Europe as a whole and show how it's so much better to just get along.
alex_hitchins··on Ask HN: Are you ok?
Exactly. HR is never your friend. Join a union if you want peer support. Actually, just join a union.
alex_hitchins··on Lockheed has an opening for engineers with VAX experience for the F22
I seem to recall something along the lines of large bombers running valves as they were less prone to effects of EMP around nuclear blasts. Not sure if this perhaps something similar?
alex_hitchins··on Ex-Mozilla CTO: I was grilled for three hours at US airport by border cops
> I appreciate horrible things likely happen in my own country

Yes, I know (as stated above). By no means am I saying it couldn't. Still, it doesn't excuse Americas practices in any way.

alex_hitchins··on Ex-Mozilla CTO: I was grilled for three hours at US airport by border cops
I think you left the /s from that post. I don't believe you can seriously believe such statements.
alex_hitchins··on Ex-Mozilla CTO: I was grilled for three hours at US airport by border cops
I appreciate the fact I'm British, but not out of any patriotism. I certainly don't think my country is awesome. Considering life is a lottery, all things considered I've been incredibly lucky to be born in a 'developed' wealthy nation.
alex_hitchins··on Ex-Mozilla CTO: I was grilled for three hours at US airport by border cops
I'd rather save my money and just not visit. I don't see anything that could out balance all the negatives. Many millions of Americans are lovely people who I'd donate a kidney to. I'd just not want to put myself through all that for so little gain.
alex_hitchins··on Ex-Mozilla CTO: I was grilled for three hours at US airport by border cops
The message it sends to me is, never visit America. I appreciate horrible things likely happen in my own country, but this is just disgusting.

alex_hitchins··on Programming Fonts – Test Drive
This is a great resource, but doesn't come up with anything that beats Monaco for me.

Does anyone have any known good reference sites for going about creating your own font? I've thought about this a lot yet never had the time to do. I think creating my own would be incredibly cool!

alex_hitchins··on Photograph Your Work
Definitely do this. It's incredibly handy to be able to send a video to support of a startup sequence failing or some other hard to describe scenario. Only point of caution I'd raise is if any confidential information is contained in the images. I know one data centre that forbid cameras within the aisles.

alex_hitchins··on How Scammers in China Manipulate Amazon [video]
I know it is off topic, but has anyone else looked at the source for that site? I know I'm old school, but really? It's quite absurd the actual content to payload ratio.
