"You're posting too fast. Please slow down. Thanks." = censorship.

Unaccountable [flag] = censorship.

Mass un-elaborated on downvoting = censorship; needing 500 karma to downvote = censorship.

Turn on showdead in your profile and see for yourself what people are "allowed" to comment vs what they're not. Userbase = mendacious pricks.

If you are here to downvote (or flag) purely to save your industry (when someone is making a legitimate point) I have nothing but contempt for you

alex1138··on Meta takes down a critical video about meta AI Glasses after filming at Meta
Oh, like the video metrics scandal? Or how their ads are shown to more people in an area than physically exist?

Of course the counter-argument is "makes money". That first of all doesn't make a good CEO (if you put no money into maintaining your site, for example), second of all it ignores all the fraud

alex1138··on Meta takes down a critical video about meta AI Glasses after filming at Meta
Outside basic network effects like real names Facebook has contributed essentially nothing of value to the world. (And no, don't tell me "React, Pytorch". People were screaming about React's license) The network effects barely matter too because their AI bans you whenever and feeds are so useless you never see what anyone posts

Instagram went from a site for photographers to Reels everywhere (and login walls on every page)

Zuckerberg is awful. Awful, awful, awful.

alex1138··on Meta VR Glasses
This is why he buys anything. I can't speak to Whatsapp but Instagram is horrific now precisely because he doesn't give a damn about making a good product. All he wants is to own the network effects, and credentials, and data
alex1138··on Meta VR Glasses
I was going to say. It's not 'the company', it's him. He has majority voting rights on everything
alex1138··on Meta’s Muse has a serious 0-day
And before this gets flagged or downvoted or "he was young" or "he was joking" or "he was making a point: he was saying 'I could be anyone', not that he can't be trusted" answer me what other tech people say this, ever, along with all the other charges ("I'm going to fuck them [the Winklevoss twins] in the ear", "You can be unethical and legal and that's how i live my life haha", hacking Crimson reporters, and that's just at Harvard, let alone when Facebook became available to the public
alex1138··on How Meta's Muse works, revealed by the 6.8 GB filesystem it sent me
I guess that's fair. I guess I just see so many comments flagged that shouldn't be (though this one just said [dead], not flagged) that my mind chalks it up to HN being HN
alex1138··on I asked Meta’s Muse for its filesystem and it sent me 6.8GB
Vouched. Guys, what the hell? This is the post author
alex1138··on ZuckOff Know when a camera is in the room
You'd be surprised. They banned Christopher Wylie from Facebook. People routinely report their entire team (building some product for Facebook) getting their accounts banned

Zuckerberg takes things personally. It's his entire history

alex1138··on Microsoft exec called AI scraping 'the largest theft of labor in human history'
"And all that" is a linguistic trick to imply "yes, this is being discussed -"
alex1138··on Microsoft exec called AI scraping 'the largest theft of labor in human history'
Information wants to be free and all that but there's a sense in which AI really is real intellectual property theft in an ethical sense compared to others and of _course_ it was Facebook who steals from everyone where Zuckerberg personally approved it

Their bots are also apparently the worst. Google does not put huge strain on your public-facing website (I think). Facebook does, they're incredibly malicious about it

alex1138··on ER visits for gambling disorders doubled after expanded online gambling market
I'm getting sick of the ads. It's in every NHL commercial break, Rogan (though I don't know about it now) has them as sponsors

Guys, it's predatory. Stop

alex1138··on XCancel service is suspended until further notice
There are messages, by the way. I'm paraphrasing, but it's something like "So, Mark messaged me saying he thinks it would be a good idea if he bought Instagram, what if I tell him no" "He'll go into destroy mode" "What if I <something I forget>" "Then he'll go further into destroy mode"

But of course you can't tell the public this, Zuck's reputation in the Valley. So it indeed becomes the feel-good story about Our Beautiful Journey

alex1138··on A single firm is behind OpenAI, Anthropic, and Meta hacking scandals
CA is a scandal primarily due to account escalation, I thought. Not about who got elected

But shadow ads can be a problem too https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OQSMr-3GGvQ (you can be pro-Brexit but ads like this are still a problem)

alex1138··on Gemini 3.8 Live and 3.8 Live Extended Thinking
Yeah +1 to this

People use text with LLMs but it's great to have a high fidelity "analyze this image"

alex1138··on An update on Wayback Machine access
I mean there are people who have reported that with their own personal website Facebook's crawlers were essentially DDOSing them
alex1138··on 25 Years of Mass Surveillance Is Enough
https://www.pbs.org/wgbh/pages/frontline/government-election... Here's a fun little interview. They had a program that apparently worked, for much cheaper than Michael Hayden's program (I think Trailblazer). Got shelved apparently due to "not expensive enough". 9/11 happens and Binney contends his ThinThread program could have stopped it. You don't want more dragnet surveillance; even beyond the abuses, it leads to it being harder to catch things

Once again, yet another legitimate comment that was [dead] that I had to 'vouch' for. HN either has broken filters (understandable, combatting spam) or seriously loves censorship
alex1138··on XCancel service is suspended until further notice
I'm sorry that I keep posting this but it gets said often enough that I'm just going to hopefully kill it permanently

People say repeatedly Instagram was a 'great acquisition' (it was. It destroyed Facebook's competition. Great for them, not for users). That Zuckerberg bought it when it was 'barely a company'. That it's somehow not antitrust (Zuckerberg in emails: "Instagram can hurt us"). People loved Instagram. Not anymore, not for a long time. Stop giving him the benefit of the doubt

alex1138··on Mark Zuckerberg: "Cambridge Analytica" (2017)
Apparently buying up everything is "brilliant acquisitions" and something to be celebrated. I don't get it. People just want him to succeed no matter what even after he's shown his true colors
alex1138··on Mark Zuckerberg: "Cambridge Analytica" (2017)
Myspace had certain problems and probably didn't scale well, it had UX problems and management problems, combine that with the fact people wanted better granularity of privacy settings (though to be fair, Myspace was decent about it. There was a publically visible wall, but, still) and Facebook seemed to offer that, but of course Zuckerberg continually subverts the settings because he does not care about privacy (Facebook actively has switched people from 'friends only' to 'friends of friends' or 'public', multiple times), and also the fact Facebook apparently built a tool early on to import your contacts to Facebook from Myspace, but, of course, not the other way around

Google later offered a prompt in their own services, because Facebook was hoovering up contacts or... something, I forget

Zuckerberg actively wants a monopoly. He's, in my estimation, a sociopath. He got lucky, but 'lucky' also means 'internet 2006'. If you steal the Winklevoss' product (something he apparently also did with 'Metaverse'. The twins meant it in some sort of bitcoin sense, Zuckerberg co-opted it) you too can capture the literally entire global market, because the world was just coming online in those years

alex1138··on Mark Zuckerberg: "Cambridge Analytica" (2017)
I don't remember this but I do know about their Free Basics nonsense where people had letters supplied on their behalf by Facebook to India's telecom authority

That and a lot else Facebook does is a primary sin, end of story. This isn't conservative vs liberal. It's one very cynical man's view of humanity. I have very little respect for Mark Zuckerberg, and much contempt for him

alex1138··on Why is Google still serving dodgy ads?
Ah, yes. The standard pipeline scammy ad/post -> report -> This Does Not Violate Our ...

Bonus points if you can get banned for any reason, by contrast, on sites like Facebook

Fuck all of you. Shut them all down, jail time for execs

alex1138··on I think I hate the internet
Ok, I have not heard about the airmiles ticket; elaborate?
alex1138··on Stockfish 19
I play chess and I'm basically with you

It's just a board game

alex1138··on I think I hate the internet
You know why? Because Acton and Koum arranged the carrier deals prior to the acquisition. That's what Zuckerberg bought, to enlargen his war chest. It's not his product, it's something he effectively stole
alex1138··on More questions about whether researchers can trust OpenAI with unpublished math
I stand by what I said, and screw you.
alex1138··on Stockfish 19
People perhaps won't remember the long history of computer chess at least how it played out in the 90s

There was a succession of interesting engines (I think The King used to win a number of computer tournaments, this is the one Chessmaster used, that wonderful audio-visual program, like Encarta but chess related) and then the big three of Fritz (match against Kramnik), Junior (match against Kasparov) and Shredder. And also HIARCS and later, Rybka (and Crafty, as well, touted as the open source chess engine)

Stockfish has been top dog (fish?) for a while now but there was a notable exception when AlphaZero (which later became Leela? I'm not sure) beat it, but these days of course Stockfish is far and away the best engine (I guess. I don't know how far behind Leela is)

And, yes, human vs computer chess has stopped being interesting for a while. There were some centaur chess (human and computer; humans using computers to analyze) competitions in the 2000s and some interesting things but nowadays of course your phone can handedly beat Magnus Carlsen and others without problems, reliably

alex1138··on More questions about whether researchers can trust OpenAI with unpublished math
HN loves drive-by downvotes. It's a real shame.
alex1138··on Muse – Meta’s personal AI agent
Why is it fine in isolation? Should you not get exactly the pushback you'd expect from saying that? As a clear joke, maybe less. I don't think he was joking though
alex1138··on Muse – Meta’s personal AI agent
The company is hurting people outside the 'bubble'.
