alejoar··on Fastpotify
Doesn't appear to find Nest speakers :(

I'd use it otherwise, this is great.

alejoar··on The EU has begun enforcing the AI Act: first RFIs to model providers
Sure, and fair.

But that only explains that Americans want regulation, not that they want EU regulation.

Americans put innovation and result ahead while Europe prefers precaution/fairness first.

There are real costs for Europe in terms of productivity because of this. Take a look at the Draghi report.

Also see European founders relocating and citing regulation as a problem when it comes to access to capital.

alejoar··on The EU has begun enforcing the AI Act: first RFIs to model providers
No they don't.
alejoar··on Show HN: Fast, native Mac file manager (filters, fuzzy find, 9 MB, no Electron)
I guess I cannot operate a computer.
alejoar··on Last.fm is now independent
I just remembered that I met one of my best friends to this day through Last.fm. It was 2009 or so, and you could leave messages on concert pages.

I posted asking if anyone wanted to go with me since I didn't want to go alone, and she sent me a message.

Good times.

alejoar··on Last.fm is now independent
I just think it's beautiful that I can see all the music I've listened to since 2005 (back when it was still called Audioscrobbler, before the Last.fm rename). And I never stopped scrobbling in all that time!

I love these kinds of stats and being able to see how my taste has changed across more than 20 years, since I was a teenager.

I do miss the old community forums they had integrated back in the day, though.

alejoar··on Show HN: boringBar – a taskbar-style dock replacement for macOS
Thank you for the tip! I love boring notch but it does have a few bugs and indeed hasn't been updated in a long time. I will check out atoll!
alejoar··on Show HN: Channel Surfer – Watch YouTube like it’s cable TV
Ha, this is amazing. We need a version for Android TV!
alejoar··on Show HN: Better Hub – A better GitHub experience
You are right, I missed that. The text is almost invisible to me though, dark gray over black..
alejoar··on Show HN: Better Hub – A better GitHub experience
Yeah I'm not giving you all those permissions. Make it more granular maybe?
alejoar··on I want to wash my car. The car wash is 50 meters away. Should I walk or drive?
As a human, I would answer the same these AIs as answering, i.e. gotta match a stupid question with a stupid answer :)

alejoar··on Resizing windows on macOS Tahoe – the saga continues
This is the way, game changer.
alejoar··on Show HN: Craftplan – I built my wife a production management tool for her bakery
You could have called it craftpan (pan = bread in spanish :D)
alejoar··on Termux
Termux has saved me countless times over the years.. One of the most powerful apps on my phone, that's come through whether I needed a quick SSH session to put out a fire or to get some real work done on the go.
alejoar··on Show HN: Zsweep – Play Minesweeper using only Vim motions
Remember to exclude vimium from the site!
alejoar··on The struggle of resizing windows on macOS Tahoe
I use easy-move-resize [1] to resize windows from anywhere inside the area of the window, using a modifier key. In my case I like using cmd + middle mouse button + drag.

This is standard in Gnome and a must for me back when I switch to MacOS for work.

alejoar··on Hacking a Casio F-91W digital watch (2023)
This is hilarious!
alejoar··on It's hard to justify Tahoe icons
Which also changes the background color to yellow for some reason. And then the "night mode" is.. what is that, a lantern? Jeez.
alejoar··on iPhone Pocket
You can, it's just a bit of a tight fit.
alejoar··on Radiant Computer
Indeed. Not very.. radiant.
alejoar··on Can we talk about the rude installers not asking for installation locations?
They is the way
alejoar··on Uv is the best thing to happen to the Python ecosystem in a decade
Hey, just so you know, newer lockfiles are meant to fully replace old ones, you shouldn't bother with solving merge conflicts on these files, just accept all the new changes always.

What you SHOULD solve are conflicts in the packages/project file. Once solved, just create a new lockfile and replace the old one.

This applies to lockfiles on any project python or non-python.

alejoar··on Show HN: Bash Screensavers
Doesn't work for me on MacOS:

I get "mapfile: command not found"

alejoar··on StarGrid: A new Palm OS strategy game
I used to play around with my dad's already old by then Palm (can't remember the model) in the early 2000's.

This game reminded me of Space War

alejoar··on Android's sideloading limits are its most anti-consumer move
I wonder where the term started?

Android itself calls it "install" when you open an APK file, there's not mention of "sideload" in Android at all as far as I can tell.

alejoar··on Tauri binding for Python through Pyo3
What is Tauri?
alejoar··on Nobel Peace Prize 2025: María Corina Machado
Wow, ok. Comparing leading the Democratic Party in the US to leading a pro democracy movement under an actual dictatorship is a wild take.

It completely banalizes the risks people like Machado face just for opposing authoritarian power.

Pretending there's any equivalence between the two situations says a lot about your worldview, or lack thereof.

alejoar··on Nobel Peace Prize 2025: María Corina Machado
Opposing a dictatorship at great personal risk, being exiled, banned from elections, and still leading a democratic movement isn't "nothing".

I think this prize recognizes her courage and fight for human rights.

Dismissing that as "just being in the opposition" ignores the reality of what it takes to stand up to Maduro's dictatorship.

alejoar··on Suspicionless ChatControl must be taboo in a state governed by the rule of law
I think you are mixing two separate things: rule of law vs privacy.

Sure, we didn’t have encrypted communication a couple decades ago, but we did have an expectation of privacy: letters, phone calls, even in-person conversations.

Encryption is just the modern way of preserving that same right in a digital context.

alejoar··on EU age verification app not planning desktop support
And Europeans are either too passive, too ignorant or too focused on the wrong issues.
