aleeds··on AI chatbots are not a replacement for search engines
It is important to recontextuilize harassers. They are typically parasites on the organization, destroying others by stealing their work and eliminating others from the work force.

Undoubtedly he came off as clever, but being a harasser means that his achievements were outweighed by the benefits.

aleeds··on Judge unseals trove of internal Facebook documents from 2012 legal action
Probably the same thing that caused it to be worth $9 billion. Holmes was incredibly convincing and had real contracts with huge companies.
aleeds··on As women have more equal opportunity, the more their preferences differ from men
Consider that "women dealing with horrible misogynistic neckbeards" and "women that get no special treatment" are in fact, compatible.

For women every day, those negative experiences are the difference from men that keep them from being in the industry.

aleeds··on Why I Don't Love Gödel, Escher, Bach
And if you read about Cantor you will find he defined a term called 'countably infinite'. No 'countably infinite' set has a higher cardinality than any other.
aleeds··on Jails are replacing visits with video calls–inmates and families hate it
Both Captain America: Civil War and Infinity War are like that.

I remember hearing shouting matches as I left Civil War about who was right, who was on the side of good.

And Infinity War leaves a lot of people with a sense that maybe Thanos wasn't so bad.

aleeds··on Theranos Misled Investors and Consumers Who Used Its Blood Test
He thought he could get away with it.
aleeds··on Taking Children Seriously
That is so ridiculously poorly applied to the legal system. Your system of rules needs power too. Don't just spread lies.
aleeds··on Cameras are about to get a lot smaller
He is talking about 'The Entire History of You'
aleeds··on My strange journey into transhumanism
I think he meant "Why don't we solve dying of old age first". I think that is pretty obvious from context.
aleeds··on Men Without Work
Just so you know, not everybody can flag. You need a certain amount of "karma" to do so.
aleeds··on Men Without Work
Or, amazingly, if we provided resources instead to single moms instead of calling them "sluts" the bad outcomes would go away.

Our "grab them by the pussy" president, who you apparently just love, actively hurts women AND men by ignoring the fundamental problem of a people without support. You are the problem and you are pathetic for making it somebody else's fault.

aleeds··on Noiszy – A Chrome plugin that creates meaningless web tracking data
Different levels of trust. Some might feel that Google has established a baseline level of trust, while companies like ATT and Verizon have not.
aleeds··on A linguist on Arrival's alien language (2016)
From what I understand, the idea is you have some string S and an input T, and running a grammar G on ST will produce an output. Sometimes they won't halt. Just like a Turing machine.

In this analogy G is the 'universal Turing machine'

aleeds··on Trump accuses Obama of wiretapping him before election
You know, the sentence "I cannot pardon Snowden without a trial" does not necessarily imply it is physically impossible. He was saying "I choose to not choose to pardon him"
aleeds··on Ray Dalio Is Stepping Down from Management at Bridgewater
The directness flows both ways, however, the aggression is strictly top down. Ray Dalio, etc, yell at people all the time, and are praised for their honesty. This is not something that goes both ways.
aleeds··on Ask HN: Are people lying about their salaries?
Just for a piece of context, this year, the base salary for right out of college software engineers at Google is ~$110,000. I would be very surprised if over the course of 10 years just $60,000 was added to a salary.
aleeds··on A Man Stopped Thousands of People Becoming HIV-Positive
About 2% of men are HIV positive. So just blindly using 1/4 you get 1/200 people are HIV positive. Assuming that the place discussed is a little bit above average, and you get a number that is consistent with the population having a 1 in 300 HIV rate.
aleeds··on Why Is Cancer More Common in Men?
One of the theories is that for whales, they are so large their cancer gets cancer and dies before the cancer is large enough to effect them. Or genes prevent them from getting it, etc.

There are a number of ways that whales are different from humans, and there is no reason that the cancer scaling with mass in humans is invalidated by whales.

aleeds··on Live slow, die old: Mounting evidence for caloric restriction in humans
All he is saying, and this is a good point, is that the long time use of something isn't indicative of it being good for you. Going to church has been around for 2000 years too, that doesn't mean that it's healthy, it's just something people do.
aleeds··on YC at Columbia, Harvard, MIT, Stanford, UPenn
That's really the problem. Sure, its cheap and they have great financial aid, but they don't pay for the tutors and the "life changing" experiences in Africa the rich kids have.
aleeds··on Asking the wrong questions
Would you like to elaborate?
aleeds··on From Headline to Photograph, a Fake News Masterpiece
The onion is not spread as if it is truth. The Onion is satire. If you have a hard time telling the difference, I do not think it is their problem.
aleeds··on Alphabet Says It Shut Down Titan Drone Internet Project
I dunno... maybe saving a whole worlds worth of lives...
aleeds··on The mystique of Goldman Sachs
Less efficient for literally 50 ms. Then it all balances out.
aleeds··on Donald Trump could dismantle net neutrality
I am all for net neutrality, but net neutrality is definitely regulation. It's the government saying that one entity cannot pay another for a service/good, classic regulation.
aleeds··on Our World Is Going Full ‘Black Mirror’
Wow, I didn't know that a billionaire was a regular person. I guess anyone is a regular person then.
aleeds··on Facebook, Amazon, Google, IBM and Microsoft Create Partnership on AI
"But in Machine Translation, Apple is ahead." was an example of a statement that could be made if metrics existed, he is not asserting that that is true.
aleeds··on The Free-Time Paradox in America
I think that your argument assumes a certain level of job attained already. Sure, software engineers who enjoy it more become more successful. I doubt that people finding stocking grocery stores correlates with their success at all.
aleeds··on Scammed By A Silicon Valley Startup
Probably want to post some meme's too, that'll avoid the association with the article.
aleeds··on Bypassing Antivirus with Ten Lines of Code
I think that when it comes to this, each individual gets to define what reliably is, and nothing else matters.
