ale42··on Attention is all you have
Knowledge and intelligence are not the same, although there might be some link.

again today on HN: https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=49857442

ale42··on Attention is all you have
> they also seem significantly smarter than older generations.

They seem or they are? In many places, statistically, they're actually NOT smarter. It's the other way around.

ale42··on Registration without a phone number on Signal will use zero-knowledge proofs
Some people believe that there's the CIA is behind Signal.
ale42··on Proof of Capture: Apple Reference Image, but open source and using steganography
Sure (I already worked with lidars before they were in phones ;-)), I had just understood that the proposal was to just not sign the images coming from a flat surface like a screen, which of course can have unintended effects.
ale42··on Proof of Capture: Apple Reference Image, but open source and using steganography
What if the camera doesn't give you an original but just a signed image?
ale42··on Proof of Capture: Apple Reference Image, but open source and using steganography
And then? What if the flat surface is a wall showing cracks and it's the photo that should have been signed?

Maybe it should include depth info in the image instead.

ale42··on Hayes AT command set
I still think to Hayes AT commands almost every time I see an article about the AT protocol, thinking "who is still using analog phone modems"?
ale42··on Playa Phone
So nice to see such projects! Thank you for doing that.
ale42··on Show HN: I wrote a BASIC interpreter that boots on UEFI machines
> It's okay to consider the firmware part of the "bare metal", IMHO.

On a PC I would think so. Using UEFI is not much less bare metal as using BIOS calls, at least. OTOH on an embedded device it would already sound so much less bare metal... I find it's a tricky question.

ale42··on Interactive Warhammer 40k Galaxy Map
Thanks, I didn't think about the possibility it might have been something else as Latin...
ale42··on “I just chose words carefully”
comment by him on a podcast [1]: "Started doing the 3-line comments just for visual appeal, became an iconic part of Laravel over time. And then I just kept rolling with it, and it became like a a [sic] Laravel meme of sorts."

ale42··on Interactive Warhammer 40k Galaxy Map
The Latin seems quite wrong... e.g. "segmentum pacificus" should actually be "segmentum pacificum" [1] to keep genders correct. Was it the same in the books (which I don't know)?

ale42··on Show HN: I wrote a BASIC interpreter that boots on UEFI machines
Not sure why the Windows version would be much bigger than the bare metal one. If you use native code, the code size overhead from using native GDI calls to draw the window is almost zero. Didn't check if the Windows version uses some GUI toolkit that inflates the size.
ale42··on Show HN: I wrote a BASIC interpreter that boots on UEFI machines
Great, nice project! In the time of Electron bloat, it's really refreshing to see bare-metal UEFI stuff.
ale42··on Executable Is a SQLite Database
I was thinking that someone managed to put an ELF header in an SQLite file while keeping it compatible with SQLite... but no, "just" a new binary format. Very interesting nevertheless!
ale42··on Show HN: Write.md – A free, open-source, themeable Markdown editor for macOS
Especially if it's not even cross-platform...
ale42··on The Power of Awareness: Overcoming Surveillance Capitalism
It's interesting, but it sounds more like a political/societal theory rather than actual events or state of the society. It would be much more interesting and largely shareable if it contained more documented facts rather than generic affirmations.

ale42··on Tenda firmware (multiple versions) contains hidden authentication backdoor
> the admin password to be 'admin'. They'd often even print it on the device itself.

Yes but aren't you supposed to change that one? The problem with the rzadmin is that it will continue to work even after you change the regular admin one...

ale42··on Microsoft Can Track Users via a Windows Device ID
Possibly the same but done by Edge?
ale42··on Organic Maps
In some places it always was better (it's OpenStreetMap data) e.g. in the Puna de Atacama desert in Argentina/Chile, Google Maps is years behind in therms of map precision. Lots of roads are missing from Google Maps. Plus, OrganicMaps working totally offline, it's perfect for such a place where the only Internet would be by satellite.
ale42··on AI fake news complaining about how AI fake news is the death of real news
Why do you even need GA? (not sure if it's bot friendly btw) One could just run a local traffic analysis and feed that back into the bot
ale42··on Android Developer Verification: Threat masquerading as Protection
It all depends on how you define malware. If malware is software doing something that is contrary to the user's interests, then for many users it is indeed malware.
ale42··on One million passports leaked online
> how did you come to this conclusion

I didn't see any reference to the possibility of using anything else on their website. And yes I was only speaking of authbound.

ale42··on One million passports leaked online
Looks like this only works on smartphones? Well... no thanks.
ale42··on Libre Barcode Project
Code 128 supports some ISO-8859-1 indeed, but it requires switching between encodings (there are 3 of them), and couldn't work with 128B (I guess the one used by the font, as it supports ASCII). See the table on Wikipedia: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Code_128
ale42··on A Practical Guide to SSH Tunnels: Local and Remote Port Forwarding
I think that the start of the article is at least a bit exaggerated:

SSH is yet another example of an ancient technology that is still in wide use today.
Ancient technology? If it was telnet or FTP... But SSH is much younger than, let's say, IPv4, which is _maybe_ ancient technology still in wide use today.
ale42··on UTFS: A Tar-Like File System for Embedded Systems (2025)
On which OS? On Windows, with the Swiss German layout AltGr+m does nothing. Probably the same on US ones.
ale42··on UTFS: A Tar-Like File System for Embedded Systems (2025)
Might be AltGr-m on Linux (didn't try).
ale42··on UTFS: A Tar-Like File System for Embedded Systems (2025)
That's what I do, actually, although I use Alt+230 because I remember the code from CP437.
