aldanor··on Writing Efficient C++ Code (2013)
Depends on your field. When one microsecond is considered "hellishly slow", you might reconsider
aldanor··on How to keep enjoying programming in a world of LLMs
It's like saying who likes to ride a bicycle in the world of cars, you can do it much easier with a plain steering wheel.

Well... sure it's more efficient (although in some cities and certain routes it's not; same with coding and LLMs). But some of us just love riding the bicycle and enjoying the nature, you know. Perhaps even strengthening our muscles as we do it, as a healthy side effect.

aldanor··on English: A vs. An
Yes, but then it may sound as if "both/all" is being highlighted which it isn't in the neutral "they are doctors" statement
aldanor··on Getting your hands dirty is good for you
Not going to lie, I was a bit confused at first (before visiting the link), why would BBC publish an anti-AI post for software developers.
aldanor··on De-Brainrot Vacations
Indulging in musicianship works very well, too. As in, learning a musical instrument, say classical piano, with some external guidance.

You'll have to activate parts of brain you might never had to previously, it's quite some mental gymnastics but also an immersive mind + body + aural connection. You may feel exhausted after an intensive practice session but in a very rewarding way. You'll have to learn to learn differently.

aldanor··on GPT-6 Astra
We'd have to wait on LeCun to make progress on that
aldanor··on OpenAI begins rolling out GPT-6 Astra
Artificial general incompetence?
aldanor··on Muse Spark 1.3
Someone did care enough to create a throwaway account to vent here, it seems.
aldanor··on Domestic cats kill 1.3–4.0B birds and 6.3–22.3B mammals annually
And how can we tell for sure if it's good or bad? Does killing these birds and mammals help maintain the ecosystem balance (due to these birds and mammals not killing billions other animals down the food chain, or not spreading infections and viruses), or the other way around?
aldanor··on OpenClaw 2.0, Accidentally
It's also things like being able to change runtime configs in human language without having to turn to computer, eg "please also track when this artist is in my area". Nothing revolutionary, but kinda the whole point? Tell it what to do, it goes off, does some chores and searches, updates some configs so that later on some crons would use them.
aldanor··on Hacking IKEA Furniture
You don't stare at your AirPods, they don't create the room vibe, whereas, arguably, the furniture does, along with the lighting.
aldanor··on A faster way to calculate the day of the week
Otherwise, the weekend should have been called weekedge
aldanor··on Cursor launches Origin, GitHub alternative
So GitHub itself is a trustworthy agent and nothing to do with AI?
aldanor··on Muse Spark 1.1
Things are not always that simple, eg https://lucumr.pocoo.org/2026/7/4/better-models-worse-tools/
aldanor··on A software engineering interview question I like: computing the median
A pretty good related question is - compute a running median (or window median).
aldanor··on Rewriting Bun in Rust
Even, possibly, the other way around in some cases. A seemingly identical program may (and it does occur) compile to a faster machine code in rust than in C++ due to extra markers (eg alignment) that rust compiler is able to provide to llvm.
aldanor··on Zenzizenzizenzic
Or cubizenzic?
aldanor··on It's hard to justify buying a Framework 12
What type of software will you not be able to run? Your browser will work just the same, and your dev env and devtools will be just the same, and it's a posix environment. If that's what I need most and it runs just about the same on macos/linux then why not prioritize the hardware?
aldanor··on Google employee charged with $1M Polymarket insider trading bet on search term
And that lad is of course an information security engineer
aldanor··on I keep bouncing off the Scheme language
Both have `class` keyword
aldanor··on Your Most Improbable Life
Foundation series vibes anyone?
aldanor··on Everything in C is undefined behavior
If there's no UBs then what will we programmers do, there won't be enough to debug and fix?
aldanor··on A desire for a loud car correlates with higher scores on psychopathy and sadism
Correlation doesn't imply causation
aldanor··on K3k: Kubernetes in Kubernetes
openkink
aldanor··on If more than 50% press blue, everyone survives. Red pressers always survive
Exactly, if choosing blue would allow you to wear a blue badge which would raise your happiness level or otherwise affect your utility function, then it might make sense. Otherwise it just doesn't.
aldanor··on The West forgot how to make things, now it’s forgetting how to code
Not the factory floor. The receiving end.

It wasn’t one bottleneck. It was all of them.

Not the nuclear material. The pattern.

Money was never the constraint. Knowledge was.

...

aldanor··on Ask HN: What skills are future proof in an AI driven job market?
Efficiently communicating with other human beings
aldanor··on The beginning of scarcity in AI
Yep.

As a recent example in AI space itself. China had scarce GPU resources, quite obvious why => DeepSeek training team had to invent some wheels and jump through some hoops => some of those methods have since become 'industry standard' and adopted by western labs who are now jumping through the same hoops despite enjoying massive computeresources, for the sake of added efficiency.

aldanor··on Sc-im: Spreadsheets in your terminal
Rust's ratatui is pretty good on the lower-level side of things
aldanor··on C++26 is done: ISO C++ standards meeting Trip Report
Incorrect.
