albinofrenchy··on Sen. Warren's new bill to regulate crypto, combat money laundering [pdf]
It isn't clear to me that regulations could or would cause that. Or that not being regulated would prevent it.

FDIC / SIPC type protections would be beneficial to consumers in cases like FTX. I'm guessing if a crypto version of those things existed, FTX would have massively failed to secure membership since by all accounts it was outright fraud. And if they did, US consumers would receive some portion of their funds back.

I think things like ethereum could have real value but as long as the landscape is littered with rugpulls and ponzi schemes I don't think it will realize that potential.

albinofrenchy··on John Carmack Leaves Meta
I don't claim to understand corporate structures or the best way to organize a large group of employees but metas problems seem to stem more from betting on the wrong thing which seemed like a decision that came from the top.
albinofrenchy··on Tesla calls self-driving technology 'failure,' not fraud
It really feels like he used to have advisors who would push back on his more outlandish ideas and that provided a good hype / pr vehicle for Tesla and SpaceX. That seems gone now.

He seemed to go steadily off the rails since the Thailand rescue debacle but that might have just been the first gaffe that I noticed as being an obvious misstep.

albinofrenchy··on Everything SBF is doing is in singular pursuit of not going to jail
Wasn't FTX considered a reputable custodian before it imploded? That's been my understanding but I didn't pay much attention before it went belly up.
albinofrenchy··on Twitter Android app dev fired: Guess it's official now.
Why would this ever be a smart move? Afaik he couldnt realistically dodge more taxes than he lit on fire at Twitter.
albinofrenchy··on The Dangers of Microsoft Pluton
I think it's a pretty good explanation of why he didn't gain more traction than he had -- he's always been a zealot with a proclivity of misguided rants that he proclaims loud and far.
albinofrenchy··on What's New in Python 3.11?
I write mainly in c and like most aspects of it but its the absolute minimum standard for built in library support.

The fact that simple reusable utility functions were/are complicated does make it feel half baked to me too.

albinofrenchy··on Scientists believed Covid leaked from Wuhan lab, but feared debate could hurt
If you are inclined to think the CCP knows / is covering up a lab leak; you are also inclined to think that they'd release fake disclosure data to cover it up.
albinofrenchy··on Chess.com vs. Lichess
Or you are good enough you don't have to try flagging every game for a chance to win!
albinofrenchy··on Chess.com vs. Lichess
It doesn't crash; it's sluggish. It's hard to quantify but it's like there is a quasi animation effect that you can't turn off. In something like 3|2 it's not terrible but in 1 minute games its a real issue.

I thought for a while that maybe I was just used to the lichess interface but I don't have the same sluggish feel when playing on my phone on the website vs the app.

albinofrenchy··on Chess.com vs. Lichess
The lichess app is all around better. Bullet is unplayable on chess.com's app.
albinofrenchy··on How a Kalman filter works, in pictures
I've been considering writing up something for extended kalman filters like this. Kalman filters are great but in my experience extremely limited without the non-linear extensions which make them useful in a much wider variety of problems.
albinofrenchy··on A single laser fired through a keyhole can expose everything inside a room
This technique only works if the object inside the area is moving, and if you can shine a laser into the space in question.
albinofrenchy··on The Case Against the Covid-19 Lab Leak Theory
> At this point, this is not a complete black box, “novel virus.”

Not sure why you insist on being pedantic on word choice here. It obviously isn't a novel virus at this point; but it was in 2019 -- or whenever WIV would have found it.

I'd also bet dollars to donuts you have no experience in virology apart from participating in online forums. Which I don't think is any kind of point against you; but it makes it weird when you come out swinging with "you don’t have the faintest bit of background in what you are talking about."

> I don’t mean to be too harsh on you, the media environment around all this has been so bizarre, how various waves of suppression have ebbed and flowed. But if you’ve known where to look, are an independent thinker, not one who just repeats what the large media bullhorns are trumpeting, and can connect dots for yourself, there’s been discussion, discourse, evidence gathering of the very likely source of this virus since the beginning.

I laughed out loud at this. If this is satire it was really well done.

albinofrenchy··on The Case Against the Covid-19 Lab Leak Theory
The article addresses this very point. I have 0 trust in the CCP to do or say anything not in it's own interest, but on the whole the "They found a novel virus in the wild, sampled it, and then it escaped their lab" seems a lot less likely than "Some random person ran across a novel virus in the wild, and got sick".
albinofrenchy··on Instant replay: Debugging C and C++ programs with rr
This kind of thing would have been found by address sanitizer immediately though no? rr seems useful in it's own right but not for this kind of issue.
albinofrenchy··on Judge refuses to reinstate Parler after Amazon shut it down
Does twitter get away with hosting way worse content? Parler explicitly does not moderate calls both subtle and overt to violence -- much less just blatant propaganda. Pretty sure the reason parler gained traction is that twitter does.
albinofrenchy··on My Resignation from the Intercept
Is this not the guy who went to the presidential debate as a guest of Trump's?
albinofrenchy··on Five Eyes and Japan call for Facebook backdoor to monitor crime
Governments would absolutely try to ban locks if they were as effective as encryption at keeping anything secure.
albinofrenchy··on Dreading a dark winter lockdown? Think like a Norwegian
The anti-masker crowd is annoying but not the majority. You aren't going to ever fix stupid.

The failures of the various governments to respond promptly is more alarming. Guidance on masking in the US is still regional; and the CDC is seized by political infighting. Testing is a train wreck. Some states are trying to fight the spread while their neighbors are busy pissing in the pool.

Deflecting the blame to the 'general population' might work if there was anything coming close to competence at the federal level but it honestly just strikes me as making excuses.

albinofrenchy··on Elon Musk reopening Tesla factory despite Alameda County order
> But if there was a button that said "save the planet but destroy a few (<50) lives," it wouldn't be unreasonable to hit it.

Of course, you are assuming the button actually does what it says. Maybe it just kills 50 people and saves a tree.

There mindset reminds me very much of religious men rolling into colonies and being ok with any kind of thing so long as they could maybe save a savages soul or two.

Once the argument hinges on grandiose intentions, damn near anything becomes "reasonable" and that is cause for alarm.

albinofrenchy··on James Damore and three others end Google suit
What University has 100 to 1? That's way, way more unbalanced than the typical cs program.
albinofrenchy··on Ask HN: What are your favorite developer-efficiency tips?
I'm really confused. I've only run into maybe one person working as a developer that didn't touch type. Is this really not nearly universal?

My version of this would be learn not to use a mouse.

albinofrenchy··on Bye, Amazon
It's embarrassing that the flow of the conversation went from "The power disparity between low and high skill labor is causing terrible working conditions" to "But the employers have to deal with theft and time theft" to "And sometimes drug use and guns" in two comments.

It's a massive derailment from the point that makes it seem like employers are unduly burdened by their employees. It reads as 'Point', 'Counterpoint' but it really isn't -- nobody is going to argue that employees should be allowed to bring drugs and guns or steal from the company.

(Although I imagine "Time theft" mentioned above includes behavior that if high skilled labor did wouldn't raise any eyebrows.)

albinofrenchy··on Bye, Amazon
It's amazing how this thread got derailed so quickly from "The power disparity between low skill workers generates worse working conditions" to "If we treat low skill workers well, don't we have to support them doing drugs and bringing guns?"

Of course not. Allowing needles and guns at your workplace isn't friendlier to employees in general.

The discussion went from "Maybe we shouldn't fire them for trying to organize so they don't die in a pandemic" to "Whats an employer to do with 33% time thieves and drug users?" embarrassingly quickly.

albinofrenchy··on Backdoor in event-stream library dependency
Linux has a giant user base, a giant installation base, and a giant pool of talented devs willing to take on unpaid work.

If this is an indictment of anything, it's an indictment of the entire NPM ecosystem -- it's been the wild wild west for years; haphazardly using whatever NPM install gives you is baked into the culture.

Sure, Dominic is an active participant in that culture but it seems to me that it is impossible to have a largely unmoderated volunteer system with as many packages are actively used without things like this happening.

Keep in mind, this is a case where the system worked, more or less -- an observant user caught the issue, and made a public issue of it. Who knows how many packages have slipped by like this?

albinofrenchy··on Magic Leap One now available for $2295
Equivalent sales is a nonsensical metric between the two. I doubt their profit margin is 5x per device compared to the rift.
albinofrenchy··on Magic Leap One
I have tried it in person; and it was overall disappointing. This was some time last year so maybe they've improved in the mean time but the AR overlays weren't particularly compelling and the FOV was terrible.

I also felt the tracking was mildly worse than Vive; although that is more anecdotal.

albinofrenchy··on Magic Leap One
I don't know about the other devices, but the hololens is incredibly underwhelming when used. The marketing CGI for it is the best thing about it. I suspect that is probably true also of the magic leap one.
albinofrenchy··on A Clarification
Are you just arguing strict semantics here? If I'm Jewish and someone advocates for killing all the Jews, to me that is clearly a physical threat and potentiality assault.

There is also a very real normalization that goes with online threats. If 100 people talk about running over liberals in a chat room, and then one of them does it; the other 99 facilitated that violence.
