albino_yak··on Important 2025 Plex Updates
I've used Plex for years (for free) and, while I'd love it to be free forever with no caveats, I think that making remote streaming a paid feature is ultimately a good decision. They need income to keep the lights on, and I'd rather pay for the service I'm getting than receive a "free" service that comes with invasive advertising or at the cost of privacy.

That said, I have noticed Plex pushing paid content and just because I haven't noticed my privacy being compromised doesn't mean I'm in the clear, so if other people have insight I'd be interested to hear about it before I commit to a subscription.

albino_yak··on Rare Photos from Inside North Korea's 'Hotel of Doom' (2023)
Yeah, they seem to be re-reporting a story from 2012. Here's an archived post from 2012 with the same picture of the same tour guide (Simon Cockerell) at the top of the hotel: https://web.archive.org/web/20141110072645/http://koryogroup...
albino_yak··on 00000 Zip Code. Is it real?
I think this article can be summarized as "00000 has at least once been used as a placeholder zip code." Perhaps I'm getting paranoid, but it read to me like someone asked an LLM to write an article about the zip code 00000 and just published what it spat out, despite the lack of actual content.
albino_yak··on Scientific journal publishers and editors say they are being offered bribes
Exactly. Bribing editors to publish your paper is unethical, it's not breaking any laws. The word "bribe" the has the connotation of secretly paying government officials, which is illegal. But authors paying editors? I don't think that's legally viewed as any different for scientific publications than it is for fiction, where pay-to-publish is an accepted practice. (Disclaimer - IANAL)
