albertogh··on Show HN: Weekend project - onepic.me

albertogh··on Ask HN: What has been your most profitable side/weekend project to date?
I made an iOS application for reading comics in literally 6 hours. I released it back in May and it's currently earning me ~$1000 a month via ads. Impressions are still increasing by ~25K each day, so profits are likely to increase in the coming months.
albertogh··on What RSS reader do you use, and what does it lack?
I'm the developer of an RSS reader for iOS/Mac which might satisfy your needs (some of my users told me they migrated from Reeder/Byline to my app). My email is in my profile, drop me a line and I'll send you a promo code.
albertogh··on Social.com Domain Is Up for Auction: Who Will Bid?
According to the auction catalog at http://domainauctions.moniker.com/viewCatalog?id=209&x=6..., opening price will be $5MM or more.
albertogh··on JSONx is an IBM standard format to represent JSON as XML
Using the example from http://publib.boulder.ibm.com/infocenter/wsdatap/v3r8m1/inde...

muk:~ fiam$ echo '{ "name":"John Smith"... }'|wc -c

303

muk:~ fiam$ echo '<?xml version="1.0" encoding="UTF-8"?> <json:object> … </json:object>' |wc -c

904

I don't really have anything else to say.

albertogh··on Instapaper 3.0 is here
I have an app, called Printful, which kind of merges Instapaper and Reeder. Email me if you're interested in trying it, I'll send you a promo code as soon as the next release is approved.
albertogh··on Instapaper 3.0 is here
Printful merges multipage articles into a single article. I don't have any promo codes right now, but email me and I'll send you one as soon as the next release is approved.
albertogh··on Hipmunk for the iPhone - here's how we built it
Most JSON frameworks are faster than binary plists on iOS. I learned it the hard way, after spending a day writing a Python module for the server side and doing some tests. However, binary plists were around 5% smaller, so they might help if your bottleneck is the bandwidth (it wasn't my case).

albertogh··on Ask HN: Apple is featuring one of my apps. Should I drop the price to $0.99?
Very interesting article, but I don't think that would apply to the App Store. Selling more copies increases your rankings, which in turn helps you get more exposure and more sales. That's not applicable to the website which offers a service for a monthly fee.
albertogh··on Ask HN: Apple is featuring one of my apps. Should I drop the price to $0.99?
That's a good point. I already have a $0.99 iPhone-only version. The "full" version which is priced a $2.99 supports both iPhone and iPad. However, the $0.99 version sells really badly. Around 5% of the full version. I'd say it's because reviewers have only focused in the universal app and users are not finding the iPhone only version.
albertogh··on Ask HN: Apple is featuring one of my apps. Should I drop the price to $0.99?
That sounds like a good idea, I'll add that right now. In fact, some of those features are already available if you enable them using the website, but they aren't exposed in the app's UI.
albertogh··on Useful apps for Hacker News
Not exactly an app for Hacker News, but Printful (iPhone and iPad) includes support for multiple news aggregators, and HN is included. This is how I've been reading HN for some weeks:

albertogh··on Creating an iPhone App From Scratch (sans Xcode/IB)
There are some errors in there:

     // The UIApplicationDelegate protocol requires you implement this function.
     // It will return our main UIWindow so the application (UIApplicationMain from main.m)
     // knows where to start.
     - (UIWindow *) getMainWindow;

That's simply not true. There's no reference to getMainWindow in the Apple docs nor in UIKit, I've just examined the binaries. In fact, Apple's conventions state that getter methods don't have the "get" prefix, so if it existed it would be called just "mainWindow".
albertogh··on SourceForge attacked, resets 2 million account passwords to protect users
Since I don't use SF these days, I'm not resetting my password. If they can't properly protect my password, I'm not giving them a new one.
albertogh··on Downloading the internet, or how we got our first 1M articles
I'm using lxml with a bit of C for the scrapper behind Printful. My algorithm is way more complex than Readability and I can still parse web pages really fast. For example, parsing a long article from NYTimes on a really old machine:

fiam@raichu:~/printful$ cat /proc/cpuinfo

processor : 0

vendor_id : AuthenticAMD

cpu family : 6

model : 8

model name : AMD Athlon(tm) XP 2600+

fiam@raichu:~/printful$ python readable.py http://www.nytimes.com/2011/01/25/world/europe/25moscow.html > /dev/null

Took 0.193097171783 seconds for http://www.nytimes.com/2011/01/25/world/europe/25moscow.html

I'd say that hosting something like this on App Engine, which prevents you from using C extensions, is not a very good idea.

albertogh··on I Can Crack Your App With Just A Shell (And How To Stop Me)
#ifdef DEBUG

    //do nothing
#else

    ptrace(PT_DENY_ATTACH, 0, 0, 0);
#endif

I really have a hard time taking advice on copy protection from someone who doesn't known about ifndef.

Furthermore, PT_DENY_ATTACH won't help because any cracker worth is salt will just open the binary with an hex editor and remove the call to ptrace(). The other two tips to prevent cracking are, at best, as useless as this one.

And just in case you're wondering, those three methods are equally useless on iOS.

albertogh··on RSS Is Dying, and You Should Be Very Worried
Email me (address is in my profile) and I'll send you a promo code for Printful. It extracts full articles from web pages, so you'll be able to read all your news from the underground.
albertogh··on Ask HN: To fight or not to fight piracy?
Found the message, it's exactly how you described it:

albertogh··on Ask HN: To fight or not to fight piracy?
This app is probably good for showing ads, since my logs show a great average session length. Unfortunately, I've published other apps with free and paid variants (with the free version having ads and lacking some features) and users will still pirate the paid version.
albertogh··on Ask HN: To fight or not to fight piracy?
I don't see every pirate copy as lost sale, I know most of them won't buy the application even for $0.01.

The problem is the server resources they consume. If I just ignore the pirates and the legit/pirate users ratio continues to be the same, I'll need 5x more server capacity to keep the app running. That's a really big increase in the hosting costs.

albertogh··on Ask HN: To fight or not to fight piracy?
I'm thinking of something like:

Dear user,

I cannot let you use <app_name> for free anymore blah blah blah. If you truly cannot afford it, drop me an email and we'll work something out. Sincerely, <my name>.

Adding a couple of buttons at the bottom, one for sending me an email and another one for buying the app.

albertogh··on Show HN: Printful, my latest iPhone/iPad app
The server does the "encoding", but the contents are stored on the local device (among other things, this method provides offline access almost "for free"). Think of it just like a proxy with a filter.

Since I have complete control over the HTML which is displayed in the devices, I can store the position where the reader is at just by recording an offset in the HTML code and doing some calculations with it.

albertogh··on Show HN: Printful, my latest iPhone/iPad app
Thank you so much, I'm really happy to know it looks great to you.

I guess the key difference between Printul and the big players is that they are (or will be, in the case of Flipboard) monetizing via ads, while I monetize selling the apps themselves. I don't need (nor want) this to grow into a multi million user service, it can be profitable just with selling around 100 copies a month (which I guess it's a reasonable number).

albertogh··on Google Latitude app for iPhone
I guess I'm biased because I wrote Latitudie :). I haven't really had time to test the Google Latitude app, since I've been setting up a bunch of servers for my next project for the whole day, so I can't tell you exactly the differences between the two apps. However, I'll be writing a blog post about that in the coming days.
albertogh··on Google Latitude app for iPhone
I liked the most upvoted comment on Reddit:

"Latitudie is still better; fun to see google playing catchup. :)"

Of course, I'm biased.

albertogh··on Your content is distracting users from ads
Forgot to add something about those reviews. I guess you looked at the reviews for US App Store which (definitely, those aren't from Spain - there 800 review scores for this app in there), obviously, are going to be terrible for an app which doesn't show information about gas stations in the US.
albertogh··on Your content is distracting users from ads
Sorry about that. It should work fine (but a bit slowly) now. I had to stop all the other services on that machine to keep up with the traffic. My blog is in a virtual machine inside a low powered HTPC and this link is #1 here on HN and top10 in reddit frontpage so I'm getting a lot of hits.
albertogh··on Your content is distracting users from ads
App developer here. Is an application which turns in a small profit, so I don't look too much at it. On the other hand, Postfix wasn't running on that machine (I had been doing some testing three weeks ago and forgot to enable it again), so the emails generated by the cronjobs didn't get forwarded to my main email account.
albertogh··on Blind user of the iPhone
Not really. I got the initial idea from readability, but I developed my own algorithm for text and image extraction using Python and lxml.
