albatross79··on "Torturing" LLMs in a Robot Prison Has Triggered the Dumbest Debate in AI Yet
Either materialism is true and consciousness is some kind of elaborate illusion, or it's false and consciousness pervades reality in a way we don't understand.

Either way, these idiotic experiments can not settle it. It's just nerds screeching excitedly about toys again.

Lol, you bought a cybertruck?
albatross79··on Claude Code now reads AGENTS.md if there is no Claude.md
CC is such a bloated POS by this point that only full on AGI could have implemented this feature. Congrats guys. Maybe with Super Intelligence they will be able to make it actually respect the instructions in there too.
albatross79··on Iran school bombing: grounds to believe US was behind atrocity, UN finds
Yes, ridicule is the real crime here.
albatross79··on Iran school bombing: grounds to believe US was behind atrocity, UN finds
Magnitude matters just as much. If they struck your child's school im pretty sure you wouldn't care if it was the first or second occurrence.
albatross79··on Iran school bombing: grounds to believe US was behind atrocity, UN finds
It is the same. At a certain level, intentions don't matter any more.
albatross79··on Iran school bombing: grounds to believe US was behind atrocity, UN finds
Dozens of innocent children were destroyed in a heinous crime. Like they were nothing. They were cherished and loved by their families. It will be a scarring tragedy in all their lives. And some guy is like 'ah, darn, poor kiddos!'
albatross79··on Iran school bombing: grounds to believe US was behind atrocity, UN finds
Arguing whether it was intentional or a mistake is stupid. It doesn't matter, the enormity of it should shake everyone involved. That it doesn't is the real tell of what kind of people these are.

albatross79··on There's no reason for software to be slow anymore
Sure there is. Nobody cares about quality, mvp and get to market first is what counts. AI means there is more reason for software to be slow, because it creates code more quickly and with poorer quality.
albatross79··on GPT 5.6 Sol 20% price reduction
They really need to start marketing a new series of models specifically for coding. Even if it's the same model underneath, just call it something else and make it sound like some turbo coder that can run circles around claude and make it 50% cheaper for businesses. I don't have any love for openai but I don't want anthropic running away with it either, and it's clear heavy AI use is going to be in coding. Consumer use is shallow. They're trying to be Apple, and it's not working.

What are you doing exactly? Building railroads? Tech is meetings and coding.

albatross79··on Remote workers report the highest well-being in study of 7,700 employees
I didn't say I have 0 interest in the job. I like the job. I said I don't care about the product, you seem to be conflating the two.
albatross79··on Remote workers report the highest well-being in study of 7,700 employees
You can schlep to the office every day and contort yourself into a freedom mindset and I'll work remote with my natural mindset. We can both be happy.

I'm sure there are great friendships among slaves and prisoners too, that doesn't mean you should be thankful to be one.
albatross79··on Remote workers report the highest well-being in study of 7,700 employees
It's like being taken hostage with people who are pretending to like it. Meanwhile some of them have personal lives so bad or they're so afraid of being alone that they genuinely do like it.
albatross79··on Remote workers report the highest well-being in study of 7,700 employees
I've never been the first to be let go. It turns out if you do valuable work, people notice that and want to keep you around. On the other hand, when I had jobs based on a personal connection, it was almost the opposite. I was treated almost like an imposter. The conventional wisdom on this is just stupid. No one is going to keep you on just because you're a good buddy. Being useful always comes first.
albatross79··on Remote workers report the highest well-being in study of 7,700 employees
Being able to work remotely is like being sentenced to prison and then finding a get-out-of-jail-free card.

I always strive to do my best at work and make a good impression. But I have absolutely 0 interest in the product, the mission, the culture, the personal or collective aspirations of owners, shareholders, leaders or "leadership", or who they are as people. I generally like my coworkers and we get along, but that's not worth a 2 hour round trip in the car, or using a public washroom, or eating in a cafeteria, or sitting uncomfortably at a desk all day, or listening to everyone's boring stories.

The best part though, is no team building nonsense, no company BBQs or pizza days, no casual Fridays, no boss dropping in for a one on one, no psychos trying to get the energy level up with a "LETS GOOOO TEAM!!"

Just doing a good job for good pay and being treated like an adult. I didn't know working could be like this when I was starting out.

albatross79··on Incident with Github.com
It's neither. If you accept and approve of people wearing their pants around their knees, its a fashion evolution. If you think pants should cover your ass, it's just poor behavior. Analogous to the use of language.
albatross79··on Incident with Github.com
No, some usage is just wrong, even if many people are doing it.
albatross79··on The Problem
LLMs are to intelligence as Brazilian butt implants are to butts. Worrying that the first is going to replace the second is a misunderstanding of what these things are.
albatross79··on Stop sending me huge PRs; a rant
It means the stakes are higher for individuals. The coding task is easier because of ai, but because fewer people are going to review it you have more responsibility for it. You can't push out slop that "should work" or "works on my machine", etc. and put the burden on reviewers to catch edge cases. You own the result and what follows so you need to think ahead more. The coding is easier, the consequences are more personal.
albatross79··on Stop sending me huge PRs; a rant
The whole point of using AI is to generate more code more quickly. If you cant keep up, then step out of the way. Some people think being a reviewer is a privileged position. Well now you've got your work cut out for you.

Ultimately the solution will be to get rid of reviews and reviewers, and put the responsibility for the code on the "author" (prompter). If you're using AI to generate code you're already mostly just a reviewer, putting more reviewers on the same code just slows everything down. What's needed is more accountability.

albatross79··on With Wall Street’s help, you’re about to be forced to buy stock in SpaceX
His innovation has been to show that you don't need to make a product that works or makes sense. You just need to make products that get oceans of fools excited and get 30% of the way there. By that point you've locked in their childish fantasies and their money comes with it. Institutional money follows and you're on your way to being the richest man in the world. The tech product fetishism that the iPhone brought about has enabled a lot of it. A lot of people are still looking for the high that a new phone used to bring.
