alanh··on Let me give you a list of the top scams coding bootcamps use to steal your money
Yep, there’s always the job available of "customer wants a new form" and "make this wordpress site match some designer's PSD" out there
alanh··on Let me give you a list of the top scams coding bootcamps use to steal your money
I just want to say that, as is usually the case for any label or collection of people, you have to end up judging bootcamp grads on an individual basis. At my company, we have interviewed and hired quite a few bootcamp grads, most of whom were previously bootcamp TAs. And yeah — a lot of them are very mediocre, you know, the kind of engineer you would never select to be on your dream team, but at least one is a really amazing hire, a great co-worker, extremely conscientious and forever learning on and off the job, pushing the rest of us forward, etc.

Tangentially, for pages like this that don’t have any sort of max-width set, you may want to use a bookmarklet like "Force Narrow Page" available here https://alanhogan.com/bookmarklets — or of course one of the reading-mode browser extensions, etc
alanh··on Amazon Blocks Sellers from Using FedEx Ground for Prime Shipments
awful logic. they know full well that customer loyalty is their bread and butter. not doing a great job solving one cause of unhappiness does not prove they do not attempt to solve any or all causes of unhappiness!

your logic is equivalent to saying, "since the South did not win the Civil War, it’s obvious they did not really care if they were under Union rule or not"

alanh··on Offline and back again: Surviving the PHP 7 upgrade by adding one letter
Hi, author here. I have no doubt you’re right. My only lines of defense are that (1) I didn’t use MySQL directly and I didn’t open myself up to injection attacks, and (2) I stopped being a PHP dev years before 2013. This is custom, legacy code still powering my humble personal site after over a decade.
alanh··on Nike won’t sell directly to Amazon anymore
Whether or not this is smart, I’m just here to highlight the obvious BS of this statement: Nike claims to be removing its product from amazon so as to "elevate consumer experiences."

ugh.

Fluffy Subjective Possibly wrong

I don’t need a massive hero image of a sports star to order gym shorts or a gym bag. I’m just searching amazon for what I need. My "experience" is worse if I never even see Nike's products, not better.

alanh··on Tesla’s new Solar Roof costs less than a new roof plus solar panels
Rolling my eyes here, bud. You’re missing the forest for the non-PC tree.

I met someone who could have been described as a “non-English-speaking roofer.” (Not Latino, fwiw.) He says he was essentially enslaved by the guy running the contracting company, and he had no recourse as no one spoke his language.

That’s the real issue, not phrasing quibbles

alanh··on Too Many Video Streaming Choices May Drive Users Back To Piracy
we're in the weeds now, but: sort of. the pirate bay doesn’t distribute anything — it just indexes it — but actually getting content via the pirate bay involves torrenting the content. and torrent is a tech that makes every downloader also an uploader to peers.
alanh··on Caesarean babies have different gut bacteria, microbiome study finds
I think you mean to say they can't, but… they can https://www.cdc.gov/parasites/hookworm/gen_info/faqs.html
alanh··on Caesarean babies have different gut bacteria, microbiome study finds
not ridiculous — it leads to higher chances of throat cancer, tragically, thanks to certain viruses being picked up in this manner. (I know, viruses and bacteria are not the same, but they share transmission vectors)
alanh··on Richard M. Stallman resigns
It’s an innocent typo, but nevertheless I am amused by imagining Chic-Fil-A as a super upscale, urban, on-trend, exclusive version of Chick-Fil-A where models instragram themselves pretending to eat

alanh··on iOS 13’s privacy pop-ups of Facebook data grabs
I was under the impression that any time an app allows you to play media and send it to audio devices (including Bluetooth and AirPlay), iOS 13 gives a scary prompt like this. I've been using the public beta and for this reason I have granted the permission to YouTube (while hoping I am right and they are not abusing the permission).

Does anyone know for a fact what Facebook is doing with Bluetooth permissions? Am I right in my understanding of how innocent usage for media playback can trigger this prompt?

alanh··on LastPass bug leaks credentials from previous site
As far as I know, 1Password has never suffered any hacks or critical vulnerabilities the way that LassPass has. I have used both in the past; I would never, ever recommend LastPass to anyone. 1Password, however? A nearly perfect product (with great support)
alanh··on Toyota is trying to put solar panels on a Prius to charge battery during the day
:D
alanh··on Toyota is trying to put solar panels on a Prius to charge battery during the day
It is so annoying when people tell me their genius idea, putting solar panels on a Tesla. Why doesn’t Tesla already do this, they wonder? Because the amount of energy captured by such a minuscule surface area would barely recoup the inefficiencies of the added weight... That, and a Tesla is sexy in a way that a vehicle plastered with solar panels would have a hard time replicating.

BTW, if you take the ferry to Alcatraz, they will try to impress with you solar panels and a helical wind turbine on the ferry itself. But pay attention, and they admit it doesn’t do anything more than power the loudspeaker. The boat runs on diesel. Because of course it does. If a few panels could power a ferry, we'd have gotten off oil long ago!

My family was never one to spend a dollar if we could spend a nickel, so our encyclopedia was significantly out of date, as was our globe. But if you knew that the USSR didn’t really exist anymore, everything else was pretty much the same. Most knowledge doesn't become wrong; it just becomes history.

alanh··on GitHub Actions now supports CI/CD, free for public repositories
The Apple Maps 'street view' equivalent (coming in iOS 13) has a transition animation (for moving down the street) that absolutely knocks the socks off Google's. It was surprising to see just how strikingly better it is. I don't think Google changed it in that time.
alanh··on Tuna are spawning in marine protected areas

alanh··on Facebook's fake account problem
I think you have some confusing typos here, perhaps some missing negations?
alanh··on Facebook's fake account problem
I'm no FB apologist, but I take issue with this:

> fake account problem … Google Trends shows worldwide "Facebook" queries down 80% from their November 2012 peak.

Except that much of this downturn in people googling "Facebook" is explainable by the shift to mobile. Surely no one needs to Google "Facebook" to open the Facebook app on their phone’s home screen. (For that matter, one doesn't even need the app icon when one is receiving push notifications from FB. No legit notifs? No problem, FB will synthesize fake ones.)

alanh··on User Inyerface – A worst-practice UI experiment
