alanh··on Tesla to recall vehicles that may disobey stop signs
Thank you, this is one of the few insightful comments I see here.
alanh··on Tesla to recall vehicles that may disobey stop signs
It’s actually remarkably good at this now. Source: Me driving with FSD
alanh··on Tesla to recall vehicles that may disobey stop signs
This is BS. Most human drivers do rolling stops. If you didn't want your Tesla to do a rolling stop, you had the option to set your FSD beta profile to a more conservative setting.

Full stops, when no cross traffic is present, waste time and energy.

alanh··on Nova by Panic
Yes, it’s still a thing, although virtually no one is using it for new projects.
alanh··on Ask HN: Gmail account security
1Password has had really nice 2FA support for years now
alanh··on Ask HN: Gmail account security
Reminder: Google paid for an ad campaign with this gist: A father creates a Gmail account for his daughter when she is born, and sends her important photos and mementos as she grows up. Sweet. Reality: At least one person tried this in real life, and the child's account was automatically deleted without recourse.

alanh··on Ask HN: Gmail account security
Yes, this happened to me with a throwaway gmail address I once had. Correct name and (strong) password, BS about a different device. I never regained access. Luckily nothing of real value was lost.

My primary email account is on Fastmail these days, and I like them.

alanh··on Are We Really Engineers? (2021)
I think it’s less that software programmers are "too good," and more that interesting programming work is too new to have established engineering practices/standards/etc
alanh··on The story behind OS X’s Unix compliant certification
Recursive backronym: “PHP: Hypertext Preprocessor” (originally “Personal Home Pages”)

I once suggested an alternative: “Powering Hypertext & Programs” (https://alanhogan.com/conversations/php/acronym)

alanh··on 1Password Has Raised $620M
I think this underscores some (but not all!) of the negative reaction to "Zendesk plans to buy (the company behind) SurveyMonkey" — the latter of which has developed significant revenue streams from specific B2B products
alanh··on 1Password Has Raised $620M
Definitively: v7 works with stand-alone / non agilebits-synced databases; v8 will not. (I think v8 is out for Windows but not yet Mac.)

I am a long-time 1Password user who recently made the leap to their hosted service. 1Password remains best-in-class for me and has a terrific security record, especially compared to their peers. While I too lament the everything-is-a-subscription-now trend, I remain a strong supporter and avid fan of 1Password.

The latest integrations offered, for browsers and for e.g. Fastmail masked email address generation [1], only work with the cloud offering. I am happy to report that these latest offerings are fantastic and have tremendous UX.

alanh··on Burn My Windows
dumb question: is there any way to get similar effects on a Mac? are there third-party tools that can change macOS appearance so dramatically?
alanh··on [dead]
Can you please explain what was and was not censored here? I think I am missing something.
alanh··on Elizabeth Holmes found guilty
Money Stuff reader detected (Me too)
alanh··on Elizabeth Holmes found guilty
I agree the proof for defrauding investors was less arguable. However there were still clear indications that she should have known the tests offered to patients were unreliable. For example, Schultz told her, before resigning, that it was not OK for Theranos to continue re-running their benchmark tests until they got a passing result (kind of like shaking the magic 8 ball until it, on the fourth shake, correctly answers the question “Is today Sunday?” — then selling it as an oracle). One employee flagged it for her attention that females were getting results that should only be possible if they had prostates — and she dismissed this as well! There was other evidence introduced during court that showed she knew the tests her company was doing for customers were not as accurate as she claimed, too. I would have loved to see her found guilty on these counts as a result, and I would also love to hear about the jurors' reasoning for not doing so.
alanh··on Elizabeth Holmes found guilty
> [She wasn’t] really being charged with [wire fraud with regard to] patients

Unless the word "really" is doing some heavy lifting here, this is incorrect. There were multiple counts directly and specifically related to defrauding patients. These counts came back not guilty, but they were, in fact, charged, and customers testified in court in support of these charges.

alanh··on Zotero: Free, easy-to-use tool to collect, organize, cite, and share research
Is there an easy way to "share" a URL from iOS/iPhone to Zotero? They have an iOS app in closed, full beta, with an App Store version apparently coming soon. In the meantime, are there solutions?
alanh··on Indiana life insurance CEO says deaths are up 40% among people ages 18-64
There is one possibility which this community will flag & downvote anyone for suggesting, which is shameful; the idea should be entertained and then dismissed, if appropriate.

alanh··on Reporter may be prosecuted for using “view source”
Parson is clearly a bad actor. View source is not a crime and it is prosecutorial misconduct — ESPECIALLY when informed by a professional that no network intrusion occurred — to charge anyone for it.
alanh··on Tokyo police lose 2 floppy disks containing info on public housing applicants

alanh··on Kintsugi – Art of Repair
I've said it before and will say it again: There needs to be a good, cheap, easy, aesthetic way to fix cracked brittle plastics, kintsugi-style. My go-to example is my plastic laundry basket, whose structural integrity is severely compromised by one crack right in the top-middle of a long side.
alanh··on Quaternions
Is there a reason why, for me, this post contains `[math processing error]` numerous times instead of math symbols?

Update: It’s due to incompatibility with the Dark Reader extension, which causes MathJax to find unexpected nulls in `classList`

alanh··on Do not leave XPS laptop in any sleep/hibernate/standby mode when placed in a bag
FWIW:

1) Looking at System Preferences right now, the setting for Power Nap reads as follows:

> [x] Enable Power Nap while plugged into a power adapter

> While sleeping, your Mac can back up using Time Machine and periodically check fro new email, calendar, and other iCloud updates

This indicates that it should not have any affect on a sleeping MacBook in a bag (presumably disconnected from power).

2) That said, I have on rare occasions found a former work-issued MacBook Pro to be hot to the touch when removed from my bag after a commute. I assumed this was some bug (not a feature), and I can neither rule out nor implicate the involvement of the nanny software installed by IT.

alanh··on A Unix-style personal search engine and web crawler for your digital footprint
code comment in the readme describes the Record as constituting an 'interverted index'. typo for inverted? although it is not obvious to me what would make this an inverted index instead of a normal index
alanh··on Why are Soviet math textbooks so hardcore in comparison to US textbooks? (2017)
No one taught me this in school, but if you add up the digits (5+7=12) and the result is divisible by 3, then so is the original number. It works recursively.
alanh··on Mapping Coronavirus, Responsibly
See my rebuttal to that other comment. And please elevate your discussion from the realm of feelings about people. Let’s say he is thin-skinned. So? That doesn’t change how helpful and eye-opening his delightful books are.
alanh··on Mapping Coronavirus, Responsibly
1. Tufte-style is fairly meaningless as a term. His books cover a vast array of graphics.

2. Almost every chart and graph I see would be better if its creator understood and applied Tufte’s principles.

3. His books are truly delightful to read and are not overrated.

4. If he’s so overrated, name a person or resource that would better impart a set of useful principles to create effective and accurate visual representations of information.

alanh··on Mapping Coronavirus, Responsibly
Oops. That’s what I meant
alanh··on Mapping Coronavirus, Responsibly
I wish people would stop treating “coronavirus” and COVID-19 (or SARS-CoV-19) as synonyms. They are not. There are many more coronaviruses.
