alanh··on Google’s AI-powered ‘inclusive warnings’ feature is very broken
There is a big difference from the 'possibility' of adding remote reporting of local data (essentially zero for e.g. Word 95) vs. the possibility of having a server do one more thing with information already on the server (trivially easy)
alanh··on Google’s AI-powered ‘inclusive warnings’ feature is very broken
Is it extremely important to omit who made the decision?
alanh··on Google’s AI-powered ‘inclusive warnings’ feature is very broken
How and why is that possibly better than saying "the Japanese attacked them at Pearl Harbor"? The passive voice is what enables the omission of the actor.
alanh··on Google’s AI-powered ‘inclusive warnings’ feature is very broken
> maintain a passive voice

surely not? even a newspaper should be striving for an active voice, at least anytime the actor is known!

alanh··on De-AMP: Cutting out Google and enhancing privacy
The charitable explanation (steel man) is that this is simply the web catching up to email. You can use DMARC, SPF, and/or DKIM behind the scenes to validate any third party you’d like to send (cryptographically verified) email on your behalf. Is it so insane to allow a third party to serve web pages for you?

I am pretty skeptical, however, given the way Google will (ab)use this.

alanh··on De-AMP: Cutting out Google and enhancing privacy
To be fair, Brave doesn’t really have their own browser engine (it’s Chromium), but it is good to have browser choice, so I agree with the sentiment. (I am a Brave user.)
alanh··on De-AMP: Cutting out Google and enhancing privacy
Recently I came across the AMP website at https://amp.dev/ (after some years since first seeing it). It’s really remarkable how much Google wants to pretend this is an industry standard and not their own little fiefdom. I don’t see the word Google anywhere, not even on the About page.
alanh··on Elon Musk makes $43B unsolicited bid to take Twitter private
It seems overly reductionist to ascribe the essence of 4chan to this one, singular idea. For example, m00t reports that 4chan was inspired by another image board he used to frequent. It is also hardly the first or only website to have light moderation.
alanh··on You’re muted – or are you? Videoconferencing apps may listen when mic is off
"They found that all of the apps they tested occasionally gather raw audio data while mute is activated, with one popular app gathering information and delivering data to its server at the same rate regardless of whether the microphone is muted or not."

Sure would be nice if they named and shamed, with an opportunity for the company to comment as well.

I can imagine adaptive video rates eating up the freed bandwidth, but I would not bet on it. I would bet the audio was indeed being sent even on mute.

Pretty unforgivable

alanh··on Human brain compresses working memories into low-res ‘summaries’
There can be surprising insights yielded from such an exercise. For example, if I think about what separates breads from cakes and muffins, I am forced to deal with the way that a typical "banana bread" (baked with lots of sugar and without yeast) is really a bread-shaped muffin more than a banana-flavored bread. This might seem overly semantic, but it does reflect differences in how it is baked and what it means nutritionally.
alanh··on Human brain compresses working memories into low-res ‘summaries’
At risk of really devolving this thread, I’m pretty sure that bodybuilders generally agree that bread is counter-productive in the pursuit of definition :)
alanh··on Human brain compresses working memories into low-res ‘summaries’
Well, one thing you can ask it to do is to make a prediction.
alanh··on Human brain compresses working memories into low-res ‘summaries’
That’s not a definition :) And, by the way, a definition is not defined as whatever one thinks a definition is.
alanh··on Human brain compresses working memories into low-res ‘summaries’
Parents report that student brains compress memories of the just-ended school day into "fine" or "nothing" depending on the specific interrogative used as a prompt.
alanh··on Why I'll never use Affirm again
I almost used Affirm the other day because deferring payments at 0% is attractive, but then I realized it would result in a hard credit inquiry, equivalent to opening a new line of credit. (Which it sort of is, but why defer $200 when you could open a real credit card and get introductory 0% for 18 months on potentially $10k or more instead? Even if you only spend $200 on your new credit card, presumably this is better for your credit score as you would be using a tiny fraction of the available credit on that account.)
alanh··on Kraken shuts down global headquarters because ‘San Francisco is not safe’
Your amended comment now boils down to a tautology: "Danger varies but is never zero." Yeah, welcome to Planet Earth.

Your original comment was a straw-man attempt to dismiss all criticism of SF's crime as risible naiveté.

So what are you actually saying?

alanh··on Kraken shuts down global headquarters because ‘San Francisco is not safe’
Everyone knows that crime stats are very misleading because

1) The DA is simply not prosecuting lots of crime, and downgrading many prosecutions (felonies prosecuted as misdemeanors or not at all), and

2) Due to above and a general perception that most crimes aren’t prosecuted, dramatically fewer reports are filed at all

alanh··on What are you doing, WordPress.com?
(Context: The link appears to have disappeared, vanishing in a haze of unresolved DNS queries)
alanh··on What are you doing, WordPress.com?
Is the DNS for this link failing to resolve for anyone else?
alanh··on Amazon moves employees out of downtown Seattle office due to crime
Building more jails shouldn't be necessary — but yes. Offer the choice of jail or rehab. (This is what e.g. Michael Shellenberger is calling for, as well as recovered drug addicts I know and respect.) This is has a dramatically better chance of saving the addict than does the status quo of bouncing them back from death with Narcan so they can do the same thing tomorrow… and the day after… and the day after… until they die.
alanh··on Amazon moves employees out of downtown Seattle office due to crime
Not 'everywhere.' Everywhere with a certain flavor of progressive politics, especially if the climate is nice.
alanh··on Amazon moves employees out of downtown Seattle office due to crime
No, sorry, 'income and wealth inequality' is not the major driver of the west coast's skyrocketing crime & grime. (I do think these inequalities' growing natures are problems.) The major driver is a population whose beliefs and guilts cause them to choose politicians and policies that act as magnets for addicts, and a refusal to take crime seriously, much less be tough on it.

Sane, good people who cannot afford to be in $WestCoastCity do not move into a tent and acquire meth habits. They move away, somewhere they can afford. I know, I’ve lived with these people, I’ve been these people. Sane-but-not-well-off people leaving is probably harmful for $WestCoastCity's culture and economy, but it is not where the blight comes from.

It’s drugs (see: San Fransicko) and crime-tolerant laws & attitudes.

alanh··on IBM Plex Typeface (2018)
I think this is a really nice presentation of a font and its inspiration. Lots of hater comments here. OK. Go straight to the GitHub, that’s fine. But this site shows a lot of the finer details in a nice way. Thumbs up.
alanh··on How illiterate people use their mobile phones (2012)
This is because such words are not derived from Latin like most Spanish words, but are from native languages.
alanh··on How illiterate people use their mobile phones (2012)
You know, I don’t pronounce this one as it is spelled, but I do pronounce the first R in February, unlike many.
alanh··on How illiterate people use their mobile phones (2012)
Point taken, but it’s not bullshit advice when the particular word in question actually follows typical English spelling rules (which, despite countless exceptions, do exist)
alanh··on Tesla to recall vehicles that may disobey stop signs
How and why does stopping completely at a stop sign, with good visibility and no present pedestrians or cross traffic, increase safety? Will wait for an answer.
alanh··on Tesla to recall vehicles that may disobey stop signs
Is it, or do we simply have more miles driven per capita? We are a big country. Not Monaco, where you could walk to anywhere else in Monaco to join a friend for breakfast
alanh··on Tesla to recall vehicles that may disobey stop signs
Hard to imagine your outrage is real. Go to the closest stop sign and watch who comes to a complete stop. Is it anyone?
alanh··on Tesla to recall vehicles that may disobey stop signs
OK? It’s also a common term for it.
