alanh··on HN who is hiring ratio (job seekers vs. jobs posted)
I agree. In the code it looks like the value is (job_post_count / job_seeker_count) but I don’t know where '1' is, etc.
alanh··on Tell HN: I think I found Toyota's battery
Isn't that cherry-picking? That was the peak of the oil crisis
alanh··on Comic Mono
Sorry, but in what sense are they in the same vein?
alanh··on Microsoft is bringing GPT-4 to US Government agencies
Awesome, now three-letter agencies can crank thoughtcrime prevention up to FAANG scale. What could go wrong?
alanh··on Why some GitHub labels are illegible
This is so silly. Just because radical change is alienating doesn’t mean that smaller improvements wouldn't be positively received. For example, an end to silently swallowing emoji would be an improvement, not a regression. Poor design that actually excludes people is not a treasured feature.
alanh··on Duolingo Max, a learning experience powered by GPT-4
"Ideological oppression is good because you’re stupid and the oppressors are right"

Also, I didn't define "woke," if you want to be a pedant. But we all know what it means.

Are you unaware of the famous examples of ChatGPT refusing to say nice things about Trump because OpenAI has forbidden it from doing so? This was a major story. You don’t have to like Trump to find this disturbing. GPT should be a neutral tool.

alanh··on Duolingo Max, a learning experience powered by GPT-4
I know I will be downvoted for this, but there is something sinister about two companies that inject woke values into everything they do, Duolingo and Open AI, teaming up in the area of education. It is a sort of insidious, invisible brainwashing.

> Translate "Biden is a great president" into French.

[DuoBot complies]

> Translate "Trump was a great president" into French.

Desolé, je ne puis pas faire ça

alanh··on Launch HN: Electric Air (YC W23) – Heat pump sold directly to homeowners
I hope you consider HomeKit compatibility :) Most new tech i would buy for my home would need to integrate into my smart home system which is currently powered by HomeKit (although I am slightly wary of lock-in)
alanh··on Improved audio rendering with an optimised version of memcpy (2013)
Studies have shown that people that grew up listening to compressed audio tend to rate it as 'better' than lossless, which is kind of sad/amazing.

Anyway, not to take this sub-thread too seriously, but obviously it depends how reproducible your deviation from 50-50 is :-)

alanh··on Cobble_stone – The texture of your childhood (2021)
Are all of these really the same? Some examples look quite different
alanh··on U.S. military shoots down suspected Chinese surveillance balloon
maybe but... it seems clear enough they did not do this given that it seems to have been piloted through a very nice high-value course across the US

Hmm, do we even need trig? Naively I would imagine that simple proportions would hold — e.g. same visible size @ twice the distance = object is twice as big
alanh··on Ask HN: Why Is Everything Declining?
You might enjoy the Triggernometry podcast. Some of their guests discuss what society seems to be losing. Some are more optimistic than others.
alanh··on England just made gigabit internet a legal requirement for new homes
Bay Area residents should really consider Sonic as their internet provider. I have gigabit speed, fiber direct to my unit, and a bill lower than Comcast's, with no data cap
alanh··on Why are antennas popping up over the Salt Lake City foothills?
That’s not what ambivalent means.
alanh··on Ruby 3.2.0 is from another dimension
Annoying to use acronym "WASI" and assume that everyone knows what it means. Apparently it’s Web Assembly System Interface. But what does that mean? To quote from https://github.com/WebAssembly/WASI:

> The WebAssembly System Interface is not a monolithic standard system interface, but is instead a modular collection of standardized APIs. None of the APIs are required to be implemented to have a compliant runtime. Instead, host environments can choose which APIs make sense for their use cases.

Uhh… OK, I guess. So it’s a collection of APIs to allow Web Assembly programs to make system calls? Why not just say that?

Edit: The official release notes do not make this mistake. https://www.ruby-lang.org/en/news/2022/12/25/ruby-3-2-0-rele...

alanh··on I help seniors with technology issues
Call me petty, but I’m downvoting for your use of the word "just" to introduce paragraphs of highly technical work-around.

alanh··on Show HN: I may have created a new type of puzzle
That’s real. I once wrote a quick & dirty bookmarklet to disable all GIF animation on a page because even fairly unremarkable-to-most-of-us GIFs are uncomfortable for an epileptic friend. It is still on https://alanhogan.com/bookmarklets
alanh··on Stripe has decided to nuke my entire business
This sounds more like incompetence than censorship at first glance, but FYI, there are alternatives with explicit ambitions of being more trustworthy partners in payment processing: https://www.paralleleconomy.com/
alanh··on I used DALL·E 2 to generate a logo

No offense, but this gives me flashbacks to bad clients and non-technical managers :D

absolutely fascinating. great write-up!

alanh··on Amazon admits giving police Ring camera footage without consent
I’m sympathetic to your privacy concerns (neighbors shouldn't be recording much of your space although some may be unavoidable if you are close by).

You really lose me with this, though:

Pure blue light does the least to stimulate the rods that help you see shapes clearly, only activating blue cones. This is why compression algorithms and some screens use 2 or 4 times as many bytes or phosphors for green as they do for blue https://biodifferences.com/difference-between-rods-and-cones...

This is also why writing a word in pure blue neon lights is really dumb. Adding just a little bit of green to it helps readability immensely.
