alabhyajindal··on WASM 3.0 Completed
The WebAssembly community should really focus more the developer experience of using it. I recently completed a project where I wrote a compiler¹ targeting it and found the experience to be rather frustrating.

Given that Wasm is designed with formal semantics in mind, why is the DX of using it as a target so bad? I used binaryen.js to emit Wasm in my compiler and didn't get a feeling that I am targeting a well designed instruction set. Maybe this is a criticism of Binaryen and its poor documentation because I liked writing short snippets of Wasm text very much.

alabhyajindal··on KDE launches its own distribution
When was the last time you tried Wayland? I switched to KDE Plasma a couple years ago not knowing anything about display server protocols and haven't had a single issue.
alabhyajindal··on KDE launches its own distribution
I love using KDE Plasma. All the best to the team!

> I try to write everything in JavaScript when I can and have it run in the browser.

Question for the author if they are here: why not use one of the many languages that compile to Wasm to write compilers for esoteric languages?

alabhyajindal··on Evolving the OCaml Programming Language (2025) [pdf]
Thank you - I appreciate it!
alabhyajindal··on Evolving the OCaml Programming Language (2025) [pdf]
This is not a direct comment on compiler development but on industrial projects in general: how do you begin contributing to something that is so large?

What should a beginner in compiler development, someone who has written a few compilers of their own, do to get involved in a project such as OCaml? I understand this issue is not specific to compilers, but is faced by any sufficiently large project. Still, I think it's an important issue. I believe there are many resources for people to get up and running in a field but not enough for them to make the next jump into industrial projects.

alabhyajindal··on Jujutsu for everyone
Thanks for your reply! I wasn't trying to be dismissive in my original comment. Just making an observation as someone new to Jujutsu.
alabhyajindal··on Jujutsu for everyone
I don't know anything about Jujutsu but the Git equivalents for some of these commands are more readable:

jj bookmark move main --to @-
  git add .

  jj git init --colocate
  git init
Also using `jj git` everytime feels repetitive.
alabhyajindal··on Bookmarks.txt is a concept of keeping URLs in plain text files
What's wrong with using the bookmarks features provided by the browser? The one in Firefox works very well for me, plus it's synced across devices.

Doesn't GitLab suffer from the same problem of pushing AI? They have many AI features, and position themselves as "The most-comprehensive AI-powered DevSecOps platform".

I love MDN. Congratulations and thank you to all the contributors!

This is beautiful and hilarious. Thanks!
alabhyajindal··on What the Fuck Python
Preach. We need more Python slander. It annoys me to no end when people trash JavaScript as if it was some exception in bad language design. Most languages have something bad that can be picked up and trashed on - some more than others.
alabhyajindal··on I want an iPhone Mini-sized Android phone (2022)
16e is not a small phone, it's about the same size as an iPhone 16.

alabhyajindal··on Inside the box: Everything I did with an Arduino starter kit
Is getting a kit like this the recommended way to learn electronics? I don't know anything about it! I would like to get to the point where I can light up a LED bulb programmatically and understand how it's happening.
alabhyajindal··on I want an iPhone Mini-sized Android phone (2022)
Why does the cost need to be so high? Chinese markets have many small phone options like Soyes and Servo that cost less than $100. Unfortunately, these devices are potentially loaded with malware.

Can a similar device without malware not be made in small batches? At a selling price of $500 or less?

I learned Python from your Udemy course of the same name. Congrats on the new edition of the book!
alabhyajindal··on Working through 'Writing A C Compiler'
You can choose to implement it differently based on your implementation language. Data Classes and If statements work really well for this in Python, for example.

Statement Data Classes: https://github.com/alabhyajindal/plox/blob/main/stmt.py

If statements in the parser matching against them: https://github.com/alabhyajindal/plox/blob/main/parser.py#L3...

alabhyajindal··on A software conference that advocates for quality
I hate talk titles of this form: "Most of your projects are stupid. Please make some actual games.". So annoying. I know it's not personal but I'm sure a better title exists for all talks that choose this form. Why do you have to insult the audience?
alabhyajindal··on Don’t use “click here” as link text (2001)
From the suggestion email¹:

> "Click here" assumes everyone has a computer and mouse. And it's not even needed: most users of the Web understand how to follow links.

alabhyajindal··on I deleted my second brain
This matches my experience as well. I have been journalling on and off for 4-5 years. It's a way for me to process my thoughts. But I never look back it, I don't feel the need to. The writing is the important bit, not the resulting output.
alabhyajindal··on Show HN: I'm an airline pilot – I built interactive graphs/globes of my flights
Very cool! I didn't know pilots are required to maintain a logbook. What's the official recommendation for this - using a paper logbook?
alabhyajindal··on Typr – TUI typing test with a word selection algorithm inspired by keybr
Yes but the issue is those code snippets are generated artificially and are not coherent. Same issue as artificially generated prose.
alabhyajindal··on Typr – TUI typing test with a word selection algorithm inspired by keybr
https://typing.io ? I like it but feels outdated, and has many little QOL issues.
alabhyajindal··on Typr – TUI typing test with a word selection algorithm inspired by keybr
I love this! Reminded me of TypeLit.io [1]. I would love something similar for programming: typing out snippets of code, that make sense, to improve typing speed involving special characters and symbols. Maybe selecting code snippets from popular open-source projects and presenting them to the user is a good start!

Why do you consider playing guitar as something tactile but not programming? Genuine question really. Isn't playing guitar also not producing anything tangible?
