"Big newspapers" are not getting the returns from online advertising because they are lazy. The days of 'fire and forget' advertising where you stick a few banners and google ads on a what the money roll in are gone.

You need to find ways to bring your advertiser's products to the attention of your readers in a way that is both useful and interesting.

al_james··on Safari 5
Wow... I wonder how that works. 'next' and 'previous' links?
al_james··on Safari 5
I have been spending less time on 'large newspaper' sites lately because I find it annoying that the text columns are becoming narrower and the ad columns multiplying to their right.

If CPM rates are dropping from your advertisers, maybe its because you are cramming too many ads in!

al_james··on Liquid particles in HTML5
Yes, I suspect its the implementation of the canvas object thats the bottleneck here.

An implementation of sub-objects (eg. sprites) on the canvas along with a dirty area only rendering algorithm would go a long way to bridging the gap.

al_james··on Liquid particles in HTML5
I think we need to accept that the 'HTML5' name will be mis-used to mean 'HTML5 + CSS3 + JS'. It certainly is easier that naming all 3 component technologies and IMO its acceptable as those browsers that support HTML5 typically support some degree of CSS3 as well (and of course JS).
al_james··on Google Chrome’s Developer Tools Improve
What would be great is the ability to edit javascript and then save the edited file somewhere. Otherwise I can see alot of copy and paste in my future!
al_james··on Making an iPad HTML5 App & making it really fast
In other words: "Don't use any of the cool CSS 3 features that would make you want to code an app in HTML in the first place". If the only way to make it snappy is to draw it on a canvas and implement your own 'dirty regions only' drawing mechanism its feeling a bit like trying to make something look nice in Java!
al_james··on Apple & HTML5
Why would they bother with this HTML5 showcase in that case?
al_james··on Apple & HTML5
Yeah, but Apple seem to be suggesting that you can use HTML5 for nice looking (near native animation) effects on these devices.
al_james··on Apple & HTML5
Has anyone tried these on iPad or iPhone? Some of them are not smooth on my macbook, surly they must suck on a low CPU device? Or am I wrong?
al_james··on Smokescreen - a Flash player written in Javascript and HTML5
Why would you want to do that for? You would still have the annoying ads (or whatever) plus the overhead of a chrome extension to convert them when the page loads!
al_james··on 65,000 New Android Devices Ship Each Day. How Much Are They Worth To Google?
Wow. Major guesswork in the numbers here. Any one of those numbers could be out and throw the final result off by an order of magnitude.

The other point is lock in. Google have 65k new users locked into a google environment each day. Their recent acquisition of ad mob (etc..) will increase revenue.

al_james··on Is java dead for startups?
I dont want to pay people to 'pick things up on the job'. I want people with a proven track record in the language we use.
al_james··on Ask HN: How fast is your site? (A short bootstrap story)
Good, but took me a little while to work out the result interface. What are the bars all about?
al_james··on Is java dead for startups?
But you are forgetting that its much easier to hire experienced Java programmers than experienced Scala programmers, simply because there are not that many of the latter.
al_james··on Diaspora's Curse - Jason Fried
Yes huge difference. It still amazes me that some geeks have trouble identifying that they are not their own target market.
al_james··on Yelp Security Hole Puts Facebook User Data At Risk
Its pretty terrible that a big site like Yelp would be open to a Cross Site Scripting attack.
al_james··on UK general election live votes and totals
Most pointless link ever. BBC is the place to go http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/shared/election2010/results/default....
al_james··on Going global with EC2 and GSLB
Its a shame geo aware DNS hosting is always at a premium price point.

On a related note: dns.com sell packages based on number of dns queries per month. How would I work out how many I need? Obviously its not one per visitor. Does anyone know what the rough ratio is?

al_james··on Posterous silently changes all external links to affiliate links
Yes!
al_james··on Student receives detention for using Firefox
But, more to the point, the teacher did ask the kid to close Firefox and they did not. The teacher may be misinformed, but that does not give the child the right to ignore the teacher.
al_james··on Opera's iPhone Browser Is Terrible
Yeah, to be honest, I think that the reason that Apple took so long in approving the app is that they were too busy rolling around on the floor laughing at it.
al_james··on The Neo4j REST Server - Part1: Get it going
I have posted on their mailing list.

However, I guess that if you dont distribute a copy of the Neo4J package with your code, they basically have no say?

al_james··on The Neo4j REST Server - Part1: Get it going
How about if the Neo4J REST component was (say) one of a few options (the others being something like FlockDB or a mysql implementation)... In effect you would need to bring your own Neo4J platform to use the larger sytem, and Neo4J would not be a core component of it.
al_james··on FlockDB: Twitter's distributed, fault-tolerant graph database
Yeah sure.... it is much harder and involves minimizing the number of relations across shard boundaries. Not easy. However, to call a system that only allows depth 1 traversals a 'graph database' is slightly pushing the definition. To me, its more a "key value database with relations between keys".

Everyone has different requirements though, if depth 1 and huge scale are what you need, flock db might be for you.

al_james··on FlockDB: Twitter's distributed, fault-tolerant graph database
Hmmm... This looks to only store first order relations efficiently, its seems that to traverse many nodes, you would need to repeatedly query the database (e.g. I can only get my friends, not the friends of my friends etc...). This severely limits the use for most problem domains you would want to use a graph Db for. Still, possibly useful if you have to solve a problem that looks alot like twitter's.
al_james··on Would you buy a laptop locked down like the iPad?
Well, I intend to buy my mum a iPad and keyboard so I can prop the iPad up on her desk, and she can use it just like a normal desktop PC. She will be able to do all the things she does normally, but with many orders of magnitude less tech support calls to me! So yes, a iPad laptop would be even better.
al_james··on Ask HN: Make makes nginx so fast ?
I would also recommend looking at node.js (http://nodejs.org/). Its an event based javascript framework that lends itself to the creation of scalable servers very easily. Its still early days, so might not be mature enough for your project, but worth a look.
al_james··on [dead]
Clear example of frontend designer not understanding the primary uses of the site he is redesigning. Myspace users don't want Myspace to look like Facebook, otherwise they would just use Facebook.
al_james··on JQuery Quicksand plugin
Anyone know of a mootools equivalent?
