akv··on Rob Pike: Dennis Ritchie has died
Is it possible for you to share the awk tarball you mention?
akv··on Jshon: A command line program to parse, read and create JSON
It is a bit long, but you can also use Python for parsing the json files from command line:

    echo '{"a": "hello", "b": "world"}' | python -c"import sys,json;j = json.loads(sys.stdin.read());print j['a']"
akv··on Please tell us what features you'd like in news.ycombinator
A way to export the list of articles in 'Saved Stories', either by way of an export function or an RSS feed (public/private) of the page.

After many years of enjoying Hacker News I now have a long list of great articles that I have liked, upvoted and in a sense 'bookmarked'. Right now, even though we can view these articles on the website, we can't download the list in any useful fashion or format.

Actually, adding RSS feeds to other pages like "best", "new" and the new function "over?points=" would be very useful as well...

akv··on Ask HN: Looking for a open source project to contribute to
If you are looking to work on a Python (or for that matter any language) project, why not start contributing to one of the many libraries that you use daily. That will give you an opportunity to understand it better, as well as fix any bugs and add features to it in the process.
akv··on [dead]
Your thoughts seem like an over-reaction to me. I think your problem is not race related, its that you are not able to explain your decisions properly to those involved. People complain when they think they are a victim of injustice. Showing more empathy towards those affected, would go very far in pacifying them.

Also from your writing it seems like, even if you don't hate them, you don't really love your minority friends, either.

akv··on The real reason "Wesabe lost" (to Mint)
This is just opinion, not based on any facts or circumstances that the companies might have faced.

Path Intelligence in Portsmouth, UK: http://www.pathintelligence.com

We think of ourselves as providers of analytics for the real world. By identifying the patterns of mobile phone movements we allow managers of shopping centres, airports and railway stations, exhibition centres, galleries and museums to understand the way that their customers or passengers behave.

We are looking for python developers, experienced web app developers, system administrators and data analysts.

Email short summary of past work experience, links to interesting projects and/or sample code to: team (at) pathintelligence.com

akv··on High Ground Maneuver (Scott Adams on the iPhone 4 press conference)
Its not a bad phone. I have an iPhone 4, and I am really impressed with it, actually I can't put it down. It has really great screen resolution, is much faster than other phones I have seen and combined with iOS4, multi-tasking, etc it makes a really good phone. The antenna issue only shows up in certain areas of reception.

I for one, am not sending my phone back...

akv··on 1995: The Internet? Bah
Isn't that part of what the Semantic Web is supposed to be?
akv··on How To Be A Female Founder
and step 1 is already done for you
akv··on Why Change Is So Hard: Self-Control Is Exhaustible
Good points. But it is harder to make yourself not do something, rather than to do something. You could set a daily time or long goal for something that you want to do, but not doing something requires constant vigil. Thats why it can be pretty exhausting.

akv··on India successfully launches first mission to the Moon
The point here is not whether India is developed or not. Nobody in India realistically expects India to become a "developed nation" for another 30 years. The point here is progress... Going to the moon wasn't even thought of 10 years ago...
akv··on Its All a Sham - An Indian Techie's Take on Outsourcing
Sorry, this is stereotypical and stupid generalization. How can you attribute the characteristics of a bunch of programmers you met in a small outsourcing company, to a whole country of 1.2 billion people?

There are more entrepreneurial and enterprising people in India than you think...

akv··on Edinburgh Hacker Meetup wednesday
I don't know of a Glasgow one. Would love to have people coming from there though. If you email me, I'll add you to the mailing list...
akv··on Calloc or Malloc? Any thoughts?

akv··on Karma-rank (Pagerank for social sites)
