akuji1993··on Launch HN: PostHog (YC W20) – open-source product analytics
Would love to hear more about this and would definitely like to read a post launch blog post.
akuji1993··on Stranded after driving out of cellphone range in app-powered smart car
> Who's fault is it?

The developer's fault. How this is even debatable is beyond me. Completely failed on the UX level.

akuji1993··on Udemy raises $50M at a $2B valuation from Japanese publisher Benesse
There actually is a German DIY store that went bankrupt because of this practice. Their slogan was "20% off everything except animal food." Since it was pretty much always 20% off, nobody bothered going for any sale. Instead they only went when they really needed something or chose a different store because of their stupid slogan. Closed down a few years back. Having a constant sale doesn't seem to help your sales apparently.
akuji1993··on Facebook Dating launch blocked in Europe after it fails to show privacy workings
Just fyi Adblock Plus has an Acceptable Ads program [1], so you will still get ads, only the ad providers paid Adblock to get through.

If you actually want all ads blocked, I'd suggest Raymond Hill's uBlock Origin [2].

> If they are corrupt but still report on corruption, then they haven’t failed as journalists.

In this specific case, yes, I think they have failed. It's different when you're a non-vegan writing about veganism and critizise non-vegans.

It's not okay to be corrupt and condemn corruption in your article. I can't take your opinion seriously if you don't live at all by the values you seem to protect or preach for in your writing...

akuji1993··on Ask HN: Advice for a new and inexperienced tech lead?
#9 is insanely important. I've had this in the last two companies I work for and it makes a huge difference. You won't get the details you need in an all hands meeting. In a 1-on-1 people will spill their guts, will tell you what exactly is going wrong in their opinion and how it might get better.

It's also very important to know more about your employees on a personal level. Are they going through a tough time, do they feel unchallenged or bored? Do you have issues between team members that need resolving? All this can come out in these 1-on-1s.

akuji1993··on The Effect of Cold Showering on Health and Work (2016)
We also don't know, but can highly suspect that the subjects in the cold shower group knew or could guess, what was wanted from them in this study. See, Prison Experiment by Zimbardo for the most extreme example, but people will behave in the way they "should" when you tell them the reason of your study.

The fact that the illness days didn't decline makes this study less viable. I'd like to see a followup, but it's hard to imagine a solid base to keep the participants in the dark. It should also be much longer than 30 days.

akuji1993··on ‘Matryoshka’ diamonds unearthed in Siberia (2019)
It's going to be interesting if and how you can put a price tag on this. It being the only case of this ever happening in nature, it could have an insane value for the right collector while being worthless to 99% of the world.
akuji1993··on Ask HN: How to implement “office hours” as a software engineer?
It's called a project manager. One of the tasks of a PM is to make sure that the devs have time to do their work and manage any incoming information before relaying it to them.

Is this an emergency? Interrupt them. Is this a minor inconvenience? Could this be talked about in the daily tomorrow morning? Is it something that someone else should actually know about? Block the information from the devs and deal with it in the chosen way.

akuji1993··on Ask HN: How to implement “office hours” as a software engineer?
This is one of those issues where you need your boss to resolvec it. I'd request a meeting with your boss, explain how and why these interruptions cost the company money, because you need to refocus after every interruption. Give examples when this happened.

If however, you have a boss that will interpret this as "Yeah, I haven't really worked much because I constantly talk to my colleagues.", it's going to be hard to introduce these quiet hours now. Highly depends on if your boss wants to support this.

akuji1993··on A fitness watch that measures blood pressure
The reviews on the page suggest it's not quite up to a certain quality yet. It's an early adopter thing and probably will need some more iterations before it's viable for broader use.
akuji1993··on Announcing Updated Postman Plans and Pricing
I mean, those prices are still not massive if your team is using Postman a lot. I don't think they won't lose much business over this move and overall it's understandable when you look at the expansion of the software and the probably much bigger team behind it.
akuji1993··on Ask HN: A New Decade. Any Predictions?
- Health care in the UK will reach levels of the US. A few years later you will see the same process starting in Germany and France.

- South America will see a transformation of regimes, this time there will be socialist nations standing their ground.

- Migration from Africa and South America will accelerate so much, we will hear calls for armed borders in the US, Mexico and Europe.

- By 2025 climate politics will be the centerpiece of every first world nation, pressured by the public. Alas, it won't change much as China will still be public enemy #1 in the West and will not change much about their climate policies.

- Javascript will still be the center of web development, Web Assembly will not strike it down, but will instead die down after a few years of hype.

- Web Components will be the standard ground work for new web frameworks.

- Firefox will die, Chrome and Edge will share market with a 80-20 share.

akuji1993··on Ask HN: A New Decade. Any Predictions?
A technology that helps reduce and capture carbon? You mean trees? Because we already have them for a few million years.
akuji1993··on Ask HN: What are your news sources other than HN?
I pretty far left, even for European standards, so this is my news:

- https://morningstaronline.co.uk/ (UK Left news)

- https://www.theguardian.com/international (Int. News)

- https://www.independent.co.uk/news/world (Int. News)

- https://taz.de/ (German left newspaper)

- https://www.sueddeutsche.de/ (German centrist)

- https://www.theregister.co.uk/ (For IT news)

- https://techcrunch.com/ (For Startup News)

- https://www.nytimes.com/section/smarter-living (For Lifestyle articles)

akuji1993··on Ask HN: What are your news sources other than HN?
Love how people downvote RT but upvote BBC. Take any media outlet with a big grain of salt. Al Jazeera is also a good news source, when you are intelligent enough to question motives.
akuji1993··on Google claims copyright on employee side projects
This is mostly a US thing. If I don't implement a DIRECT competitor to my company in my free time, the company can do absolutely nothing about it here. IF I implement a competitor and put it on the market, they can fire me. They can't however, sue me for the posession of the software. That's just a legal nightmare in the US.
akuji1993··on Ask HN: How Can I Learn Music Theory?
I thought that "Music Theory for Dummies" was a good start for that. From that I went on to YouTube channels to learn more about the specifics that I was interested in.
akuji1993··on A foundation course in reading German
Actually you can't really say this: https://german.stackexchange.com/questions/8527/wer-sagt-die... See the map in this thread.

It's basically different in any county and different counties can be right next to each other.

akuji1993··on Depressed People See the World More Realistically (2017)
My therapist said to me once: "I really like pessimistic patients a lot more than overly optimistic ones. A depressed, pessimistic person is judging the world very accurately and is not crushed by a negative outcome, as they have already thought about exactly that. They might even completely circumvent the negative outcome, because they thought about every possibility beforehand. Optimists on the other hand can be crushed and become very depressed when the positive outcome is not the result they are presented with."
akuji1993··on A fake town on Reddit where everybody knows your name
Seeing as most of the Top All Time are fairly old (a year to 6 months) it seems the page has taken a hit regarding active members posting meaningful content. Pretty sad, I would've loved to contribute some stuff. But I also wrote on a roleplay forum in amounts that accounted to about 1000 Word pages so I might have a different goal here.
akuji1993··on A fake town on Reddit where everybody knows your name
It seems like a really fun idea. Sadly the sub consists of a lot of 4 upvote posts and then one "funny" one with 2k upvotes about a guy trimming a penis in someones hedge. A lot of the posts are single sentences or maybe at best one paragraph. I had the hope it could be a writing challenge, fleshing out some stuff for the sub in a few paragraphs or articles, but that doesn't seem to be the goal here.
akuji1993··on Ask HN: Will getting a PhD lead to a more interesting life?
> In most countries a PhD will graduate around 24

Not in Germany. I started studying at 18, so as early as possible. Finished after 5 years with my Masters degree. A PhD would've taken a minimum (!) of 3 more years, so I would've been 26 or older. If you don't have a perfect start, take more than regular study time or take longer than those 3 years, it's easy (and not considered being bad) to be 30 when you're done.

akuji1993··on Match.com Used Fake Ads to Swindle Users, F.T.C. Says
The reality for someone like me, a very average looking guy, is then that I get zero messages. Doesn't really solve anything either.
akuji1993··on Immer is a library of persistent and immutable data structures written in C++
Saw this code in a client's redux project, it was awesome to see that. So much easier than how we were about to do our very complex state updates. It takes away a lot of the complexity. Immediately copied that and showed it to our webdev channel.
akuji1993··on Can I Email: ‘Can I Use’ for email
Just saw Rémi Parmentiers talk at SmashingConf 2019, worth a watch, it's not online yet though, so you guys might have to wait a day or two. He's the guy behind this project and probably one of the most knowledgable persons about everything email.
akuji1993··on Facebook Paid Contractors to Transcribe Users’ Audio Chats
And again, it was clearly pointed out, that users opted into this with clear consent. There is no real story here, as this is exactly what was agreed to by both parties.
akuji1993··on Anxiety Looks Different in Men
In my experience, they can sometime help and sometimes they can't. If they understand your issue, it can be easier and quicker to talk through your issues with a friend. Deep, buried anxiety issues are not understood by people that don't experience them. I, a completely healthy young man, constantly worrying about my heart, was met first with concern, then with dismissal as my issues didn't disappear after a week or so. You can become very annoying to friends. People who understand might be better. In my opinion, a therapist is the best, everything is inferior to that.. But that's just what worked for me.
akuji1993··on Anxiety Looks Different in Men
A thing I love about my therapist is, that I tell my anxiety stories exactly like you, without much emotion and pretty clear and to the point. Still, in that moment, I experienced heavy levels of anxiety, but I can't just reproduce that at a later time (that sounds odd to me anyway). But he takes my word for it and works through it with me. Never in my therapy did he not believe me, just because I didn't tell it with a terrified look in my face.
