akman··on It’s Not Enough to Be Right – You Also Have to Be Kind
>Maybe it's possible to do both?

I agree, and I think that's part of Ryan Holiday's thesis. That also happens to be the message in the book Crucial Conversations.

akman··on By Quitting Social Media You Could Read 200 Books a Year
>Regardless of the fact if it's even possible to read that quickly, what about retaining and revising what you learnt? Especially important if you're reading non-fiction.

Exactly this. # of books as a goal seems like a poor choice of metric. But perhaps readers new to books have to start somewhere that's easy to measure, even if it's not a great metric.

akman··on Ask HN: What's your favorite corporate power move?
From the comments, seems there is confusion on what you're looking for. I sense sarcasm in your request, i.e., 'What are cargo cult things one can do to show power?' But some responses are more genuine. If you make the ask clearer in what you're really looking for, it'll make it easier to decipher the responses.

My 2 cents...

akman··on PacVim – PacVim is a game that teaches you vim commands
I've gone through a number of tutorials, games, and articles, but I still think the best resource I've found so far is actually a book, "Practical Vim: Edit Text at the Speed of Thought": https://www.amazon.com/Practical-Vim-Edit-Speed-Thought/dp/1... . The book focuses on use cases which is a refreshing approach to Vim.
akman··on Nigerian Teens Are Making Sci-Fi Shorts with Slick Visual Effects
At least for George Lucas, he was self-funding to start Star Wars and did not want Hollywood to own a piece of the pie (source: https://www.imdb.com/title/tt0416716/). I'd think that would count for something in that he'd want others to realize joy in a similar model of creation.
akman··on Rachmaninoff – Little Red Riding Hood [video]
Nice find. That's along the ideas of what I had in mind.
akman··on Rachmaninoff – Little Red Riding Hood [video]
Makes you wonder why Beatmania and games of that ilk don't have a version of the game for the full keyboard. And when you've mastered that 'level', you've actually learned the notes (maybe not much more, but it's something!) for a real piano piece.
akman··on The High Price of Multitasking
The accompaniment hand is practiced to the point where it's automated, so not truly.
akman··on Algorithms, by Jeff Erickson
You may be interested in the book Algorithms to Live By ( Brian Christian, Tom Griffiths). I thought it was a fun-to-read book, though I don't think there was any code in the book at all.
akman··on The relationship between age and wisdom-related performance (1999)
With wisdom, one follows (good) advice and prospers from it. But usually it takes personal experience of some sort before one follows advice.
akman··on The relationship between age and wisdom-related performance (1999)
IMO one of the most worthy goals technology should try to solve: shortcuts to acquire wisdom
akman··on Cleaning sprays have an impact on lung health comparable to cigarettes
considering some people ingest vinegar for blood sugar regulation, seems like a safe way to go
akman··on Lenovo unveils retro ThinkPad for 25th anniversary
Anybody see anything about solid Linux compatibility? I was hoping they'd have more information on that.
akman··on API Design Guide
Check out Apigee's ebook on good API-Design: https://pages.apigee.com/rs/apigee/images/api-design-ebook-2... disclaimer: both are my employers
akman··on Google’s former happiness guru's three-second brain exercise for finding joy
While it's easier to doubt the advice in those circumstances, ad hominem is still a fallacy that shouldn't be discounted. The advice could still be sound.
akman··on Why are Adults so busy?
Interesting you bring this up. I also felt that maybe <5% of the links I've clicked on have really changed the way I think or led me down a path that ended up changing my path in life. How do you put a price on that? You can't, really.
akman··on Ask HN: What is your go-to example for a good REST API?
My employer (Apigee) makes a good introductory ebook on this topic. Be forewarned this is a huge topic with many (strong) opinions on what 'good' REST actually is.

akman··on CHIP $9 Computer
Also waiting on mine from a little over 6 months ago (the Black Friday deal). It's supposed to ship sometime this month according to when I purchased it. But really, at $8 (+shipping), I see it as one of those things that if it comes, it comes.
akman··on Elon Musk: we are probably characters in some advanced civilization's video game
Fermi's paradox is relevant: http://waitbutwhy.com/2014/05/fermi-paradox.html Maybe Bostrom's option 1 happens due to the Great Filter...
akman··on AWS IoT Button
>https://www.particle.io/button 20 $

Since this was mentioned elsewhere in the thread, this is actually $49. With a little work, the $19 Photon could certainly do the same.

akman··on My Biggest Regret as a Programmer
Interesting to see similarities between this and Camille Fournier's post on the same topic 11/2015: http://www.camilletalk.com/whilefalse/2015/11/truth-and-cons...

The common message is you often have less influence if you don't go the management track.

akman··on The Loophole in the Hedonic Treadmill
Completely agree on Stoicism and A Guide to the Good Life. Gratitude, as you describe it, goes a long way for life satisfaction.
akman··on Brazil declares emergency after 2,400 babies are born with brain damage
ad hominem :-)
akman··on Scan a book in five minutes? $199 ‘Smart scanner’ with foot pedal and WiFi
Not much besides the textbook gets destroyed, so no more margin notes or highlights.
akman··on Scan a book in five minutes? $199 ‘Smart scanner’ with foot pedal and WiFi
another option that's roughly $1 for 100 pages:

This is a good option depending on your needs (e.g., only select books, smaller collection, you don't want to do any of the work, etc.)

akman··on Introducing Driver Destination
You're implying that stasis = we're all car pooling already. The reality of stasis is that we're NOT leveraging the car pooling opportunities there are, and so Lyft is helping to resolve that. That's a step forward.
akman··on Meditate in front of your computer with Calm

akman··on Why isn't People-Centric UI Design taking off?
Because we're still in the stage of figuring out the different and optimal ways of communicating with each other, let alone presenting all choices to a sender.
