akkawwakka··on iMessage for Windows: A labor of love that will never see light of day (2018)
> The iMessage team for macOS

Given Apple’s frenetic propensity to be extremely resource conscious, I doubt that team even exists any longer.

There’s likely some larger messages team that is itching to replace that app with the iOS version via Mac Catalyst... which despite the poor experience of most Catalyst apps on the Mac, would still make for a marked improvement. Goes to show you how poorly maintained the app is.

The pathology of COVID-19 is really interesting. As the article describes, the viral pneumonia is well-described, but there are a lot of knock-on effects from infection of epithelial cells. Namely, virus binding to ACE2 receptors causes oxidative stress which can give rise to disease and cardiovascular events. MedCram did a really great video talking through some papers on this subject. [1]

If you want to learn more, also check out This Week in Virology, a podcast that has been covering COVID-19 in great detail the last few months. It features a panel of virologists and other folks in the scientific field (immunologists, etc) plus a doctor reporting about the situation at a clinical level.

It’s being reported there was an “engine failure”. I’d assume that engine failure and fire detection systems are pretty good, not to mention that pilots train on engine fires/failure and single engine procedures regularly.

Are there situations where pulling the fire handle to extinguish a fire or shutting down an engine wouldn’t be adequate to alleviate some sort of grave failure?

The company and its engineering teams are absolutely subjected to delivering too much.

I think the prior perceived quality of Apple software was propped up by a lot of people internally grinding very hard on a far smaller set of products than the company ships today. That might work when you are at 10k people, not 120k.

It’s really time for Apple to make a good faith effort to improve its software development process. Honestly it seems more like an executive leadership issue, incessant and hasty product changes come at the cost of stability.

akkawwakka··on Material world: how Google discovered what software is made of
>A material metaphor is the unifying theory of a rationalized space and a system of motion. The material is grounded in tactile reality, inspired by the study of paper and ink, yet technologically advanced and open to imagination and magic.

What does any of that even mean?
