akkat··on American companies are suppressing wages for many workers
I don't understand why Right to work laws are bad, maybe you can explain. If I am looking for a job at a company and I don't agree with the unions politics, high fees, etc. and I would like to make the contract between me and my employer by myself, what is wrong with that. Why should I be forced to join a union? Or more specifically, why should I be forced to join a specific union? What if that union wont let me join because I support Republicans?

You mentioned letting the free market sort things out. That is exactly what Right to work laws do. They let two independent people make an employment agreement without anything interfering with them. If the union was good and worthwhile, the employees would join. If the unions were good then employees who were not part of the union would be paid less and get less benefits. If that is not the case then that union is not a good one and should not force workers to join it.

This is great news. Now we can compare what ISPs do in NN states verses non NN states.
akkat··on North Pole surges above freezing in the dead of winter, stunning scientists
Thanks for the information
akkat··on North Pole surges above freezing in the dead of winter, stunning scientists
I guess my knowledge of the north pole is really bad. When I look at google maps or any other globe, I see that the North Pole, similarly to the south pole, is full of ice. Are you saying that that is not the case? Are there no scientific stations there?
akkat··on North Pole surges above freezing in the dead of winter, stunning scientists
I don't understand. Is the temperature now at the north pole above freezing, if so where can I see the temperature? Is WaPo forecasting that the temperature will be above freezing? According to the article:

> While there are no direct measurements of temperature there, Zack Labe, a climate scientist working on his PhD at the University of California at Irvine, confirmed that several independent analyses showed “it was very close to freezing,”

What does that mean? Do they not have a device measuring the temperature at the north pole at all times?

akkat··on How We Learned to Love the Bill of Rights
By "attacking" you mean calling some news fake news and criticizing other people's political statements. Those things are within the law. Jailing people for their political opinion, like they do in UK, China and Iran, is a violation.

Anyone trying to make laws allowing those things would be attacking the first.

akkat··on Airlines inching closer to dynamic pricing
I doubt any airline would require you to input your passport number before giving you your price. The first airline that tries that will drive away their customers.
akkat··on The Most Intolerant Wins: The Dictatorship of the Small Minority (2016)
That's terrible! I can't seem to find a source of the vice president being connected to legislation allowing police to ignore LGBT people being beaten. Can you give me the link to one?

Also, what do you mean by camps? Forced orientation changing?

akkat··on Self-Censorship in Public Discourse: A Theory of 'Political Correctness' (1994) [pdf]
That's the big problem with censorship. If op would post the true statistics that black crime rate is higher than other races then op would be downvoted. op would then go on to think that they are right, and that the political opponents are afraid of having their political bias exposed. If however op was not downvoted for making an innocent observation, but rather was told that the statistic could be used to show a higher correlation between poverty and crime, maybe op, and other readers, would change their mind about the situation.

The problem with this approach is that if op was trolling then they could spit out a huge list of seemingly correct correlations that nobody would have time to debunk all of them. That would allow some of op's bad correlation to be left not debunked and appear that it is right.

In online forms you have to figure out if someone is trolling and then behave in one of two opposite ways based on it they are out aren't.

akkat··on Ask HN: Would you live in a town built for remote workers?
That depends on your citizenship. If you are a US citizen be prepared to report all you money and income tax them when you are abroad. Oh, and also you may be denied a bank account by virtue of your US citizenship.

A bit unrelated but there are horse vs people marathons. and many times people win. that is because horses cannot cool themselves like people can
akkat··on We’re witnessing the fastest decline in Arctic sea ice in at least 1,500 years
What is the meaning of 1,500 years? Are there no earlier records or was the Arctic declining faster 1,500 years ago? If the later, do we know the effects?

There are some Firefox and chrome add-ons that fix that issue. but I have yet to find something that fixes Facebook's link redirection. Anyone know of one?
akkat··on What If Men and Women Skied Against Each Other in the Olympics?
oops, that's what I meant. Too late to edit
akkat··on What If Men and Women Skied Against Each Other in the Olympics?
Why do men and women play separately? My guess is because men would almost always win against women. But in marathons Nigerians have a statistical advantage, should marathons be separated into Nigerians and not Nigerians? In most winter sports athletes from colder climates do better, should winter sports be separated based on the climate of the athletes's home country? People from Russia do better at chess... I assume most people would say that the people in my examples shouldn't be separated. So why should men and women be separated?
akkat··on Chrome will stop displaying ads that are repeatedly flagged as disruptive
One of the few exceptions that I can think of would be skymall. It is a magazine with only ads for overpriced useless stuff that you can read about (and maybe buy) while on a flight. I would normally read the entire magazine during the boring flight.
akkat··on Unilever threatens to pull its ads from Facebook and Google over 'toxic content'

akkat··on How black people still need to outwit racists in rural America
I see.. Thank you for the information. I will have to rethink my take on the US division of taxes
akkat··on How black people still need to outwit racists in rural America
> Unemployment benefits are for people who have lost jobs meaning they previously paid into unemployment insurance plans

If you don't include that as "welfare and benefits of the poor" I don't know what you would include. I guess you're right in the sense that only a small portions of ones taxes go to pay people who never worked and never plan on working.

I double checked and you are right that most of SS and medicare go to retired people. They probably aren't considered "poor". Do you know of any unbiased (or low biased) place that counts what percentage of the budget goes to poor people (food stamps, housing projects, extended unemployment benefits, etc.) ?

akkat··on How black people still need to outwit racists in rural America
What do you mean "welfare and other benefits of the poor was such a small amount of their tax dollars"? According to a quick Google search [1] social security and unemployment makes up about 33% of the budget and Medicare makes up about 27%. Meanwhile military is "only" 15%

akkat··on The Shallowness of Google Translate
It used to, but not anymore for long sentences. That is one big reason that I switched.
akkat··on Family fun with deepfakes
The thing is that we have to believe someone when trying to understand what happened. A person, no matter how honest, can make mistakes. With a recording all that is necessary is to make sure that it is honest.
akkat··on Family fun with deepfakes
The difference is with testimony, the witness can be as moral and honest as possible but still miss report what they heard. With faking audio, it is either correct or someone purposely tried to fake evidence. That means that if the source of a recording could be verified, we know that it is very close to true. With witnesses, there is always doubt.
