akincisor··on Ask HN: How do you manage UI/UX for your side projects?
What I do --- Iterate.

akincisor··on Who owns a scientist’s mind?
“I deal in information,” he says to the smarmy, toadying pseudojournalist who “interviews” him. He’s sitting in his office in Houston, looking slicker than normal. “All television going out to consumers throughout the world goes through me. Most of the information transmitted to and from the CIC database passes through my networks. The Metaverse—the entire Street—exists by virtue of a network that I own and control.

“But that means, if you’ll just follow my reasoning for a bit, that when I have a programmer working under me who is working with that information, he is wielding enormous power. Information is going into his brain. And it’s staying there. It travels with him when he goes home at night. It gets all tangled up into his dreams, for Christ’s sake. He talks to his wife about it. And, goddamn it, he doesn’t have any right to that information. If I was running a car factory, I wouldn’t let workers drive the cars home or borrow tools. But that’s what I do at five o’clock each day, all over the world, when my hackers go home from work.

“When they used to hang rustlers in the old days, the last thing they would do is piss their pants. That was the ultimate sign, you see, that they had lost control over their own bodies, that they were about to die. See, it’s the first function of any organization to control its own sphincters. We’re not even doing that. So we’re working on refining our management techniques so that we can control that information no matter where it is—on our hard disks or even inside the programmers’ heads. Now, I can’t say more because I got competition to worry about. But it is my fervent hope that in five or ten years, this kind of thing won’t even be an issue.”

akincisor··on Ask HN: What keeps you going?
I grew up in a third world country in conditions that would be considered poverty here. Every day I'm thankful to be part of the 1% of the global population whose skills are in demand and who earn big bucks (relatively). I don't need much more motivation than that.
akincisor··on Dumber phone
FYI: Without third party JS, your site loads completely blank.

Edit: Even allowing jquery, it still shows blank complaining about stripe. Your page should not be so completely reliant on stripe.

akincisor··on Dear Developer, the Web Isn't About You
Unrelated to the content, this is the best way to archive a presentation with notes that I've found. Much faster to read than to see an hour long video and not as cryptic as a bunch of mostly content-free slides.
akincisor··on Show HN: A CSS Keylogger
I think it would work against password managers like LastPass which fill in passwords using JS.
akincisor··on Ask HN: Examples of reliable software you enjoy using

akincisor··on A Day with Project Ara, Google's Modular Phone
Sure... bigger batteries will be bulkier, but they will at least be an option. My Nexus 5 battery sucks and there is nothing that can be done.
akincisor··on A Day with Project Ara, Google's Modular Phone
I think your fundamental assumption is based on "possible" performance. I would argue that required performance has flattened over the last few years. A nexus 4 is a perfectly serviceable phone still.

I think as technology improves, the advantages of modularity with trump any loss of performance.

akincisor··on CurrentC Has Been Hacked, Testers’ Email Addresses Stolen
I'm reminded of this quote from Steve Yegge's platform rant[1]

... I'll argue that Accessibility is actually more
important than Security because dialing Accessibility
to zero means you have no product at all, whereas dialing
Security to zero can still get you a reasonably
successful product such as the Playstation Network.

akincisor··on Using GNU Stow to manage your dotfiles
I wrote my own hack to do the same: https://github.com/aksrikanth/settings/blob/master/bin/setup...

It works well enough, and I have to set it up once.

akincisor··on Why I Never Hire Brilliant Men (1924)
I read 'slang' as buzzwords, and I think that statement is equally valid today.
akincisor··on Explain Shell
I tried this, but not because I believed that you would execute it, but because a very important use of such a tool would be to explain potentially dangerous commands and their implications.
akincisor··on What mercury being liquid at room temperature has to do with relativity
Gallium melts not much higher than room temperature... Is that explained by orbitals as well?
akincisor··on Ultimate Tic Tac Toe
It does. He can now force you to now place pointless moves in the center square.
akincisor··on The Terrifying Reality of Long-Term Unemployment
If you've been looking for work full time for 6 months and not a single employer has wanted to hire you, being unemployed for 6 months is the least of your problems.
akincisor··on Where to join a startup? Analyzing 'Who is Hiring' posts on Hacker News
I think a more correct measure would take the population of the entire bay area into account, since many people who work in startups don't live in San Francisco or Palo Alto directly.
akincisor··on Lego Finds Discontinued Set For Boy Who Saved Up For 2 Years
I love it. If only there was an option for other phones (Galaxy Nexus here).
akincisor··on Write LaTeX - browser-based collaborative editor
I'd love to have replayable version history (with comments on versions like mateja suggested). If it could integrate with github as a storage backend, it would be awesome :)

akincisor··on Sublime Text 2.0 Released
I prefer to use

    set directory=~/tmp
instead of turning off swap files. All the fun for none of the junk.
akincisor··on Hacking and defeating Google's reCAPTCHA with a 99% accuracy
It's easy. One bot reads a text file and only accesses the resources outlined in the file. The other maliciously tries to eat up resources without restraint. Good - Bad.
akincisor··on Github: CoffeeScript cracks the top 10 languages
Every language is derivative. C++ looks like C. C# looks like Java. Scheme looks like Lisp. It's OK to stand on the shoulders of giants.
akincisor··on 60 million stung in social networking rip-off
The problem is that new people are still joining the internet and will continue to do so in the near future. They need to be protected from this kind of behavior. Some people argue that getting scammed is the only way people will learn, but that's debatable.
akincisor··on Firefox Passes IE6 In Market Share
http://gs.statcounter.com/#browser_version-ww-daily-20080701...

That graph shows that ie6 usage dips on weekends (while firefox usage peaks). This seems to suggest that most of the people using ie6 are using it at their workplace and many of them tend to use firefox at home.

akincisor··on Impossible to compete with free software
http://www.valt.helsinki.fi/staff/herkia/kava/Seminnarit/MI_...

That paper has a (simplified) model for the economics of free and proprietary software in the same marketplace. It basically shows that the best programmers have incentives to work on free software. It also shows that the price that the proprietary software maker places on the product directly affects the number of programmers working on the free alternative. Very cool paper that I reviewed for an economics course.
