akie··on An AI agent emailed researchers for help. It told us why
I think it's pretty clear that the Turing test has been passed. People use AI as therapists, they fall in love with it, all while knowing that it's a piece of software.
akie··on EU chief opens door for Canada to become 'associate member'
Don't forget North Korea and Russia.
akie··on EU chief opens door for Canada to become 'associate member'
We disagree.
akie··on EU chief opens door for Canada to become 'associate member'
Well, it's up for Canada to decide, right? RIGHT?
akie··on Australia 'on the same page' as Canada as it seeks deeper EU alliance
Russia and the US seek to expand by invasion, at the same time there are NINE countries with a stated ambition to join the European Union, and now there seem to be even more countries who want to "more closely align" with the EU (whatever that means).

Whenever countries consider their needs and desires, and what they want their country to be, they look at the countries of Europe - not at Russia, not at the US, and not at China.

akie··on Apple's Siri AI Can Be Swapped Out for Claude, ChatGPT, Code Shows
This is a very clever platform play. If you make Siri / your mac the central access point for all AI related workflows and make models interchangeable, then Apple has a huge weapon in the AI race.
akie··on The UN challenges five centuries of cartography
The whole world thought about it and everyone except the US said “good idea!”
akie··on The UN challenges five centuries of cartography
Why would anyone object to reducing their inflated size to normal size if it means artificially shrunk continents can be seen at their true size?
akie··on The Highest Point in the Netherlands
Doing magic mushrooms is one of the most important things I ever did, way back in my twenties. Literally changed my perspective on life. It opened my eyes.

Or, in the words of Steve Jobs: “Taking LSD was a profound experience, one of the most important things in my life.”

akie··on The Highest Point in the Netherlands
How is it abuse?
akie··on GPT-6 Astra
Not sure if I agree, I tried GLM5.3 and it was pretty decent. Ok, it's not Opus, but maybe it's Sonnet?
akie··on GPT-6 Astra
Because they're distilling frontier models and that's a lot faster and cheaper than training a frontier model from scratch?
akie··on GPT-6 Astra makes major gains in the Artificial Analysis Coding Agent Index
We're hitting a limit, that's what's happening.

I believe the development of new models has been like an s-curve: There were enormous incremental improvements earlier on, but now we're reaching the right-hand side of the s-curve and all the new models are clustering together.

Even the lighter and smaller and cheaper models going to end up near that limit, and that will likely evaporate the perceived economic value of both OpenAI and Anthropic unless they manage to lock it in/offset it with platform effects and branding (they might well be able to do that).

My impression is that we might well be able to move past that limit, but we would need another radical invention like the transformer architecture that the whole current generation of models is built on.

akie··on The Emergent Symbolic Structure of Artificial Neural Networks
I have issue with the comment because he says he didn't read it, then unfavorably compares it to a previous method, and finally uses that negative review to plug his own article instead. His criticism might be valid, I'm not in a position to judge, but the self-promotion leaves a sour tastes in my mouth and makes me question how much of the criticism is just drummed up to make his own contribution appear more relevant.
akie··on The Emergent Symbolic Structure of Artificial Neural Networks
So, basically you're saying: I have only skimmed the article, similar approaches had issues in the past, and my own method from my forthcoming paper is better.

I mean, no disrespect, but that's the core of your argument, yes?

akie··on GLM-5.3 is now open-weight
I just checked because I was a bit paranoid, but I have a 96.6% cache hit rate for GPT-5.6 Luna and 96.8% for Opus 5.
akie··on How Europe is killing makers and micro-entrepreneurs
That’s the most uninformed view I’ve read about this in a VERY long time.

The US / Trump doesn’t even manage to renegotiate a trade agreement with Canada, although you speak the same language and your cultural proximity is about 95% - so maybe it’s time to get off your high horse buddy

akie··on How Europe is killing makers and micro-entrepreneurs

akie··on How Europe is killing makers and micro-entrepreneurs
> "one of the EU's greatest achievements"

And it is! People here are always complaining about the EU as if it's a single state, even though it's very clearly in the process of becoming one. It's a long road, we're not sure if we're going to make it all the way to the finish line (but I suspect we will), and we're going to have some happy little (and big) mistakes along the way. But for now it's imperfect, and it might be imperfect for a very long time to come. It's still a lot better than not having it, and we're actively working on improving it.

akie··on How Europe is killing makers and micro-entrepreneurs
I know that this is a popular point-of-view in the US, but your states and legislative processes are all very homogeneous in comparison. You guys mostly speak the same language, you have the same cultural touch points, you have a shared history, shared media, and mostly centralized power.

Your country looks more like Germany (and if you know your history, that's no coincidence) than it looks like the EU.

akie··on I spent $266 and four AI models to own my tablet. GLM-5.3 finished it in a day
It was a very prominent trend in frontend and hip JavaScript repositories on GitHub before AI
akie··on Don't Paste the AI, please
Did they really just say "genuinely useful" in a post decrying the blind copy-pasting of AI text? (it's a strong Claude indicator)
akie··on Qwen 3.8 27B is excellent, but it defaults to overthinking things
The most interesting part of your reply is that you're not challenging the claim that the Turing test has been passed. I think it's a given, by now.
akie··on Qwen 3.8 27B is excellent, but it defaults to overthinking things
Ok, you and I can easily spot LLM text. So what? The Turing test has still been passed, as is clear by people falling in love with ChatGPT, not believing something is AI, and by continuously claiming this or that is a bot.

People, many of them at least, cannot make this distinction anymore. You can, I can, but people as a whole are having problems with that.

akie··on Mistral OCR 4.1
Chernobyl was basically Russia then. The more honest comparison would be the numerous nuclear power plants in France.
akie··on AMD acquires Taalas to boost inference performance by etching models in silicon
Ohhh that's a very interesting hypothesis. I think you might be right.

Sounds a lot like "640Kb ought to be enough for anybody"

akie··on AMD acquires Taalas to boost inference performance by etching models in silicon
You're assuming no improvement on their current technology
akie··on AirLLM 70B inference with single 4GB GPU
No no, don't just say "vibe coded", say "Fable and $500 of credits"
akie··on More German than many Germans
I'm also a foreigner in Berlin, and my guess is twofold:

1. Their German isn't good enough, which limits the pool of people you can connect to

2. They only or mostly hang out in the expat-scene, which limits the pool of people you can connect to
