akhodakivskiy··on David Rosenthal on cryptocurrencies
For example in Russia the chinese vendors would sell their stuff for cash rubles, convert them into crypto, send crypto to china, order a container of new stuff, ship it to Russia, repeat.

basically they save on taxes, conversion fees, cross border transfer fees, etc. on the cash portion of their revenues. it’s probably harder to do the same with card payments as the tax agencies are in control of electronic payments.

in the end there has to be a reason to use crypto in some economic activity. in the example above it’s cost management.

akhodakivskiy··on Michael Lewis and the parable of the lucky man taking the extra cookie (2017)
the highest ranking person in the room won’t take the extra sandwich, but will take the extra million to buy as many sandwiches as he wants.

in this isolated experiment the entire organization consists of 3 persons, one of them a leader, and 4 sandwiches.

real world orgs are much more complex, and sandwiches take many subtle forms

akhodakivskiy··on Ask HN: What are you working on?

akhodakivskiy··on The race to save Polesia, Europe's Amazon
To me this sound like a crappy piece of propaganda. This project is in the national interest of Poland, Belarus, and Ukraine. They would profit from this route, obviously. The underdeveloped region would get a nice boost. The project is also against national interests of so many other countries that profit from lack of such route, many in the EU, notoriously Russia, and many others.

The caption “colorfully painted log cabin” under a photo of a dissolving uninhabitable shack is priceless. Really makes me want to protect the region from evil humans.

akhodakivskiy··on The Most Dangerous Writing App
Hello, I'm just beginning to type, and I have no idea what's going to appear here. The concept of writing under the fear of loosing all the progress is fascinating. But I actually need to first see what it means to 'loose progress'. Ok, I see now, the screen begins to turn red, it reminds me of taking damage in first person shooters. But yeh, this concept can be extremely motivating to carry on. When musicians improvise, they also have this sort of pressure. It manifests in the need to keep the music going, maintaining the rhythm, melody, and the form. It's much more challenging than just writing some text. Although I can do none of music improvisation. The parallel to music would be writing poem under the pressure of loosing all the progress. I'm also not capable of rhyming words. But it's Ok though. Being witty, and creative is a skill. Another skill is being thoughtful and persistent, just at different pace.

I'm wondering if this text can actually be read by a stranger...

While Artem seems to be an ass, the other important conclusion that can be drawn from this article is that Dayne and Clyde sunk $10k for 600 lines of simple Go code. It took them months to realize that they're being cheated. Now... would you sink $10M of funding into a company managed by such people?
