This is exceptional - what’s the downside when using it with CRA?

What does one do if we've been deemed not good enough for top schools or institutions?
akhilcacharya··on A Year at Google Brain (2020)
Yikes, jesus christ. I wonder what they think of people at "regular companies" like mine or people that graduated from "regular schools".
akhilcacharya··on Remote workstations for discerning artists
At an internship we heavily used Windows RDP over our local network - worked phenomenally well, basically 1:1 when connecting to our "home desk" desktop. I think RDP + very high bandwidth network is the best way to do it still.

akhilcacharya··on Gab Has Been Breached
As someone that is also a minority, I'm both aware and heartbroken that it became a very popular form of bullying towards children after 2015 [0].

Racist bullying isn't new of course, but this particular phrase is fairly new.

akhilcacharya··on Boston public schools suspend advanced learning classes
I’m skeptical that many people care to do a drastic intervention like this. I was in AG but if I wasn’t I would have gone to the same school.

(If it matters, I grew up Asian.)

akhilcacharya··on Who cares about the Ivy League?
That sort of seems contradictory to why people go to top schools though!
akhilcacharya··on Stadia undershot to the tune of “hundreds of thousands” of users
It’s honestly extremely funny to see Google burn millions in R&D on the AMD hardware, Linux porting tools and runtime, as well as the improvements to WebRTC while their competitors just used AWS GPU instances (like Shadow) or their own GPU farms (GeForce Now) running Windows to run games with little modification.

Stadia is an unmitigated disaster outside of playing Cyberpunk and I’ve been a longtime fan of the streaming games concept - I was an early fan of OnLive and used the GeForce Now beta regularly. It’s ultimately a case study in how investing only in tech isn’t necessarily customer obsessed.

akhilcacharya··on Wi-LE: Can WiFi replace Bluetooth? (2019) [pdf]
Might be wrong, but I'm under the impression that the video encoding has a significantly higher energy cost on the Quest 2. Virtual Desktop even allows an OC setting if I remember correctly.

It helps, of course, that the bandwidth required for VR streaming is fairly low using the Oculus link protocol.

akhilcacharya··on The Framework Laptop
Looks promising, but having AMD chips would be killer.
akhilcacharya··on Who cares about the Ivy League?
Tell me, what's a poor sap like me who couldn't get into a good school to do if these conversations ultimately devolve into how hopeless it is if you don't get into a top institution?

It either matters enough that I'm screwed for life, or it doesn't really matter all that much in the grand scheme of things. Which is it?

akhilcacharya··on Who cares about the Ivy League?
Correct, and that should end. One of the many reasons I was overjoyed to vote for a non-Ivy ticket last November.

I see her work referenced here and there - what is she known for exactly?

(I personally can't stand the writing style, but I get the appeal.)

akhilcacharya··on Interest surges in top colleges, while struggling ones scrape for applicants
Maybe I should be more clear - I didn't go to a Tier1 public school, didn't get into an elite school, how screwed am I?

I don’t think anybody thinks going is expensive, the expensive part is getting in, something fundamentally out of reach by design for 99.9% of the population and 95% of the applicant pool.

Something is really rotten with this country if the only tools to get ahead are a 5% shot at a “better life” (though people seem far too politically correct to provide a counter factual outcome if you don’t get into an elite institution).

Even less than that really, only around 77k votes (MI, PA, WI margins).
akhilcacharya··on 68% of the top links on Facebook since September are in support of Donald Trump
He's actually president because of 81 million votes in every state but especially those in 25 States, DC, and Nebraska's 2nd congressional district.

Indeed, the silent majority of this country voted for Biden.
akhilcacharya··on California’s affordable housing problem is really a national one
Everyone talks about the billionaires soaking up the windfall for the last 40 years, but really it's the upper middle class that's leading the charge here.

Massive wealth inequality in this country is being driven by an increasingly prosperous upper middle class [0].

You're not wrong! But the classic "get good grades, get good scores, do A, B, C, D" gets you into a school like UNC in state at best. Most people don't have the opportunities to do the sorts of things that get people into top schools (and hoard opportunity).
