akeruu··on Chernobyl's 'stalker' subculture
On a rather unrelated note, those binders are called "fardes à anneaux" in my dialect of French. Translating directly to "ring binders". Languages are fun
akeruu··on We can't send email more than 500 miles (2002)
Yes, this story gets posted a lot, and many of us might know it, but at the same time, I like to think about the ones that didn't. They will learn something new today. XKCD said it better than I could: https://xkcd.com/1053/
akeruu··on Japanese Grammar in EBNF notation
There are but I could not find many details about them in English. Some of the well knowns are:

すもももももももものうち or ははははははははのははははははとわらった

Please see MeCab (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/MeCab) segmentation output below:

akeruu··on IP addresses and routing
This happens more often then you might think.

A lot of people are adding padding when they need to store IPs. So they can be easily sorted using alphanumeric sort:

192.168.001.001 192.168.001.002 192.168.001.003 ... 192.168.001.254

And then use it that way to connect to servers, causing lots of confusions.

akeruu··on Secrets of Resilience: Lessons from adults who overcame difficult childhoods
It sounded genuinely honest to me and I find being proud of oneself when tough times where endured is pretty healthy.
akeruu··on Ask HN: What is the best way to spend my time as a 17-year-old who can code?
I am so late to the party I feel so ashamed but here is my 2 cents.

Please, please, travel, and by that I don't mean doing a full a world tour. Just explore what exists outside of your surroundings. Exercise yourself to questioning. Making money is fine, and most of the time needed, but discovering what your like / loathe is as important. Talk to people, share stories, get into argument, confront yourself with other way of thinking.

Being able to code or having a nice portfolio might make you hire-able but true maturity will make you shine amongst others.

akeruu··on Show HN: Product Graveyard – Commemorating the most memorable dead products
I really like the tone and the realization.

Just a small thing that bother me is that on my desktop machine, the second column is not aligned as neatly as the others (due to two lines descriptions maybe ?)

akeruu··on Ask HN: Whats your favorite backpack for everyday carry?
I might be a tad late to the game, but I'm really happy with my Wenger. Specifically this one : http://wenger.swissluggage.com/proddetail.asp?prod=600628

I previously used one from SwissGear too but found the Wenger a bit more robust for my commute heavy life.

akeruu··on Where/how to host a web site and database?
I'm simply using Heroku free tier for both hosting and database, which is PostgreSQL.

It is really simple to setup although you get some delay due to their "sleeping dyno" system. [0]

akeruu··on Ask HN: What is the best way to decide what books to read?
There are some nice online book recommendations website. Most of the time I use Good Reads [0] or What Should I Read Next [1]

akeruu··on Ask HN: What is your side project?
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=be.nebuleux.jt...

jTrains is an offline tool to plan railways trip in Japan.

I developed it for my own needs but figured people might like it so I ended up publishing it on the Google Play Store.

It is a bit rough on the edges but I very much welcome any suggestions for improvement.

akeruu··on Realm is a mobile database: an alternative to SQLite and key-value stores
I have dabbled a bit with it quite a few times and was quite happy about it, but my main issue is that AFAIK there is not "pure" Java API for Realm.

It seems there have been attempts at removing Android dependencies but it seems they were never finished, meaning you can't have it running on desktop apps.

This is (sadly) a showstopper for me.

akeruu··on Godbolt: Enter C, get Assembly
X can always by devided by 2, meaning the condition will always be false thus returning "a" unchanged. "xor eax, eax" is a shortcut to "mov eax, 0".
akeruu··on Quantum Gravity’s Time Problem
Actually for a photon time is so dilated, it does not exists anymore. From its perspective everything "happens" at the same "time". There are quite a few answers for this :

akeruu··on Large BGP Communities beacon in the wild
Short answer is "no".

Long answer is, actually these changes already happened quite a while ago.

Most of the time, we tend to forget IPv6 is in fact more or less 20 years old now.

Support for IPv6 in OSPF (OSPFv3) was introduced in 2008 and support for IPv6 in BGP was added in 2007 (MP-BGP).

AS numbers encoding was also changed in 2007 (32bits ASN) to support all those new connected system.

akeruu··on The legacy of Pieter Hintjens
For those, like me, who also have trouble understanding this, I found Hintjens answered this very question [0] by mentioning a post on his blog [1].

akeruu··on A Theorem about Primes Proved on a Chessboard
I never heard about this kind of game. So to summarize (if I understood correctly), this would be a variation of the classical 8 queens problem [0] but on a wider board. Very interesting !

akeruu··on Did Our Ancestors Become Bipedal So They Could Throw?
I as told in Jr. High School that we ended bipedal in order to stand in the bush so we could see further what was coming up and then, with our hands now free, we could start building tools and use them. I don't know what this explanation is worth but I find it makes a lot of sense.
akeruu··on How Teletext and Ceefax are coming back from the dead

akeruu··on Ask HN: Anonymous person sent proof of SSH access to our production server
Please listen to this advise. Having the proof or maybe only some hints is very important. That might sound far etched but this anonymous person could very well be an insider employee trying to blackmail your company for personal reasons.
akeruu··on Humans once opposed coffee and refrigeration: why we often hate new stuff
I find a recent video by Veritasium [0] very much relevant here. As stated, cognitive ease makes us wary of new or unknown things. It is not simply fear of the unknown, we literally takes the shortest path to something we know, hindering ourselves from new discoveries.

akeruu··on Dead googlecode URLs on GitHub
Actually, this is not a new idea. Entire block of IP adresses are known to have been highjacked this way and are now used for spam purposes. Squatters reclaim the block with various ploys including registering an abandoned domain name to accept email to the point-of-contact domain contact. [0]

akeruu··on The rectangularness of countries

akeruu··on Mr Robot S02E01 easter egg
I really do think the same. Actually the crime sera drama "Columbo" worked that way as we knew beforehand who the culprit was. The point of the whole episode was to discover why the victim was killed and not how or who by.
akeruu··on Interviewing my mother, a mainframe COBOL programmer
About the IMS to DB2 migration, intuitively I would try to write a translation layer between the two databases. Do you know if this was already attempted or deemed undoable (or silly) from the beginning ?
akeruu··on As Japan's population shrinks, bears and boars roam among schools and shrines
> Why ?

Sorry for brevity, this only a HN comment but here are some highlights.

The main reasons are low birth rate and low immigration and due to various factors :

Low birth rate : Fewer / later marriage, Poor work/life balance, Small living space, Hight costs of raising children

Low immigration : Japanese people view themselves as "uniform" (which is debatable), Country closed to foreigners for two centuries

akeruu··on Bushido: Way of Total Bullshit
This has been subjected to revisionism multiple times.

After public protest and court ruling, it is now admitted it was the Japanese army which ordered people to kill themselves and even killed them:

"Orders from Japanese soldiers led to Okinawans committing group suicide," and, "The [Japanese] army caused many tragedies in Okinawa, killing local civilians and forcing them to commit mass suicide." [1]

akeruu··on Announcing Google Research, Europe
Can only confirm this too. I lived and worked in Zurich and it it indeed very hard to make friends. They are polite and well meaning but very distant. A (german) coworker told me this (sad but oh so true) joke about Zurich inhabitants : "How to make them laugh ? Point a gun at them and order them to do so". No way I'm going back there.
akeruu··on Hints of an unexpected new particle could be confirmed within days
No. As per Betteridge's law of headlines [1].

Joking aside, while the article has some content, the headline is definitely tending way to much towards click-bating.
