in most cases you could just drop back into the initramfs that is included in most distros

Or if you have access to the boot command line you can also usually stop the boot process before pivot_root happens (hence you’ll be left running in the initramfs environment)

On Fedora/EL it would be done by putting `rd.break` in the kernel command line

akdev1l··on Illinois Introducing Operating System Account Age Bill
Either they’re doing a slippery slope trying to change the status quo or they’re doing this to keep the status quo

Seems you are contradicting yourself

akdev1l··on Illinois Introducing Operating System Account Age Bill
>keep business as usual/status quo.

Umm isn’t that what we want? Or are you suggesting there should be some other legislation in place?

akdev1l··on Why I love FreeBSD
I’m confused because can already do this on MacOS, Windows and Linux

Does `podman machine init` not work in FreeBSD? In those other platforms it will spin a small Linux VM to run containers on.

akdev1l··on Corruption erodes social trust more in democracies than in autocracies
cheaply as in not meeting standards

without corruption you could do a shitty job once and then you won’t get another contract because you did a shit job

with corruption the quality of the work won’t matter so in the extreme case you can deliver nothing at all and you’ll still keep getting contracts - In my country we call this being “plugged in”

akdev1l··on Corruption erodes social trust more in democracies than in autocracies
I am not sure the incentives are aligned.

those people fixing the roads are incentivized to do the work cheaply so they can skim more “off the top”

And you still need to fight corruption to some level or it will come to a point where there’s more skimming than work being done

akdev1l··on Ageless Linux – Software for humans of indeterminate age
You couldn’t really write a law that is easy to interpret in all cases and that is completely unambiguous.

Could the law be better written? Probably. But at some point there will always be a grey area that needs to be slowly defined through jurisprudence and case law.

akdev1l··on Ageless Linux – Software for humans of indeterminate age
so many people start asking random questions like these acting as if judges are drooling baboons or something

“What’s even an operating system will this apply to my toaster?” - probably not, a judge would ultimately decide.

Few people seem to use it outside of Amazon tho

akdev1l··on Unlocking Python's Cores:Energy Implications of Removing the GIL
I think you have a good point on IPC but process creation in Linux is almost as fast as thread creation

Unless the app would constantly be creating and killing processes then the process creation overhead would not be that much but IPC is killer

And also your types aren’t pickable or whatever and now you gotta change a lot of stuff to get it to work lol.

I used outlook on the browser when needed and slack was open most of the time

I also had around 200 tabs open on the regular

Now I wouldn’t tell you it was a good experience because it wasn’t. But it was usable even pushing the hardware to the max.

akdev1l··on MacBook Neo

akdev1l··on MacBook Neo
wine already runs on Mac so really they would just need something like dxvk to have a package similar to proton

To be honest if Apple wanted to they could work with valve to make gaming on Mac a reality

To some degree it should already be possible with wine + dxvk + moltenvk

akdev1l··on MacBook Neo
MacOS is crazy efficient and can overcommit quite a lot.

I used an M1 Pro for a couple years to work. 8GB of ram but routinely using 12GB including swap.

Now, I couldn’t keep slack and outlook open so there were limitations but I was able to work. People are underestimating the usefulness of 8GB of RAM.

I guess it is also worth saying that I do my work by connecting to a remote server where I do the actual development and everything else. The Mac itself being a web browser and ssh machine

akdev1l··on Stolen Gemini API key racks up $82,000 in 48 hours
I have never heard of nor seen AWS student accounts.

There is a free tier but that varies per service and anyway will not limit anything. It works as if it just gives you some credit to offset the costs.

akdev1l··on A new California law says all operating systems need to have age verification
I think it’s meant for the case where a child is using an adult’s user account but maybe their own account within that

eg: you let your child use your laptop for a bit to play Roblox. The child logs into the Roblox account which has their real age. As per the law Roblox is required to use their inner age signal instead of the OS provided one.

I suppose it could also go the opposite way: if your steam account is 18 years old by itself then probably we can treat you like a grown up and ignore the OS provided signal.

I guess the latter form would be quite rare for anyone to implement.

akdev1l··on What does " 2>&1 " mean?
if statements are pretty simple

if $command; then <thing> else <thing> fi

You may be complaining about the syntax for the test command specifically or bash’s [[ builtin

Also the choice of quotes changing behavior is a thing in:

1. JavaScript/typescript 2. Python 3. C/C++ 4. Rust

In some cases it’s the same difference, eg: string interpolation in JavaScript with backticks

The incentive is still there.

If there is an algorithm putting stuff on people’s faces then there will always be an incentive imo.

I had the mastodon app installed and it was doing that. After I uninstalled it opened in the browser just fine.
akdev1l··on Keep Android Open
You can’t really do that long-term as Google will change code that will not match however you are not enforcing this policy

So at the very least you’d have to keep patches up to date.

Long term divergence could be enough that’s it’s just a hard fork and/or Google changes so much that the maintainer can’t keep the patches working at the same pace

I couldn’t read your link as it asks to join mastodon.social

You’re thinking too far behind. They can just use the AI to generate what your taxes would’ve been.

Just have a script with “what are the taxes owed by $name” and print the output

I’ll take $5M now and you can own 50% of my startup: GenTaxAI

akdev1l··on 27-year-old Apple iBooks can connect to Wi-Fi and download official updates
Using the same lease is better but still could cause IP conflict if the lease was revoked and reused (though I guess that’s much rarer)

that said I do agree with you that the behaviour was probably not as described or at least not present in current systems because it would wreak havoc on public wifi etc

I’ve never dhcp being any sort of bottleneck so I hope their just doing the regular dhcp thing

akdev1l··on 27-year-old Apple iBooks can connect to Wi-Fi and download official updates
why is this a good thing? This sucks, it would randomly cause IP conflict in some cases
akdev1l··on I started programming when I was 7. I'm 50 now and the thing I loved has changed
You can’t really claim any PR is “low-effort” without actually reading and digesting the thing

Yes in the past you could check “oh this doesn’t have back trace or any steps to reproduce, close with won’t fix”

Now you cannot do that, the “low-effort” could be a 500+ lines code change with accompanying documentation and a 300 lines in prose describing the “problem” alongside with “backtraces” showing the issue

Except, the fix is non-sense but you have to read 500+ lines too know that. The documentation doesn’t match the changes but you have to read it to know that. The backtraces literally contain made up functions but once again you need to look closely to verify.

And if the thing isn’t immediately obvious to be AI generated then you’ll end up asking questions which will get forwarded to some AI and end up playing broken telephone.

All of this literally happened to curl in different issues.
