akanet··on Treachery in the Rodin Museum 3D scan verdict
I'll fucking scan them then. Are they just out on the floor? They can't stop me.
akanet··on Don't Be Fooled by this Summer of AI Hype
This is such a bad article, which I suppose to be expected from Gebru/Bender. It is so strange to claim that AI capabilities are "hype" and useless, and simultaneously that we should censure these companies for the damage that rogue AIs have done.

We can't have both! The models are both insanely powerful, AND very dangerous! Anyone who's used a frontier model for an hour should understand this.

akanet··on This Hi-Fi Tape Recorder Changed Radio Forever
IBM was extremely involved in purposefully collaborating with the reich to run censuses to identify Jewish populations, not to mention running actual prisoner inventory at various concentration camps. They specifically made overseas subsidiaries to shield this activities from US sanctions at the time.

thanks for double checking, that's very good to know!

It looks like a webgpu driver issue - can you tell me what model of graphics chip you're using?

Yes, I also added a bit of context on twitter (https://xcancel.com/fulligin/status/2079296985811873796) and will probably blog about the process a bit more. Grace was a lot more work than Sutro. I wanted to be ambitious in combining interior/exterior scenes in a new way, and I also wanted it to be less of a "toy". Grace actually plans to use this to show prospective renters the space, and we spent a lot of time making sure it could run well on a wide variety of devices.

Thank you!

I spent a lot of time hand-masking out inconsistencies between shoots. I waited too long between sessions and they actually built out an entirely new section of ceiling. PPISP guidance in splatting also helps a lot in solving sensor inconsistencies between the many different cameras and lighting conditions that went into the source dataset.
akanet··on Rewriting Bun in Rust
The article is very clearly human written. The author discussed on twitter that he used Claude for visualization and feedback. You can simply say you don't like the writing style, but it is not a very useful comment to have written in any case.
akanet··on Remote work, not AI, has sidelined recent college graduates, research finds
Are you implying that the federal reserve bank of New York has an incentive to mislead? Did you examine the study methodology?
akanet··on The Vercel breach: OAuth attack exposes risk in platform environment variables
This article is solely overly wordy (probably ai) restatements of essentially just what vercel has publicly disclosed already
akanet··on YouTube's $60B revenue revealed amid paid subscriber push
It is very amusing to read HN comments that complain about the "enshittification" of free platforms while simultaneously mocking those who would pay for stuff they like. YT is dollar for dollar the best digital subscription I pay for and I pay it gladly.
akanet··on Waymo exec admits remote operators in Philippines help guide US robotaxis
Waymo remote operators cannot drive the car
akanet··on Photographing the hidden world of slime mould
A couple years ago I became obsessed with getting slime mold to grow on a cast 3-dimensional substrate. I finally got it working on an agar mold of Donald Trump's face, which you can see here: https://youtu.be/pxEN-YKDDVM.
akanet··on Who Watches the Waymos? I do [video]
Very nice, quite enjoyed that.
akanet··on Who Watches the Waymos? I do [video]
Most of it is not drone, but you have to think a bit about the angle and duration to realize this. Merry Christmas
akanet··on Legal win
Matt do you guys still use the office in the US Bank Building in the mission?
akanet··on Vendors that treat single sign-on as a luxury feature
I ran a company that did price segmentation on SSO, and it's the other way around. The burden of supporting the buggy piece of crap that is SAML SSO is the cost of the privilege of being able to perform such sharp segmentation.
akanet··on Free Gaussian Primitives at Anytime Anywhere for Dynamic Scene Reconstruction
The ones paying $20 for the viewing? I think so.
akanet··on Free Gaussian Primitives at Anytime Anywhere for Dynamic Scene Reconstruction
People often say this about vr, but I think the truth is that consumers of adult videos are not motivated enough and the production costs outweigh the benefits. The demo scenes here were each captured on about 20 cameras, each carefully synchronized and rigged to be out of each other's lines of sight. Add the expertise and time to train the models (still more like pets than cattle) and we're getting into movie ticket territory and away from tube site
akanet··on Ask HN: Should I leave the company I co-founded?
Bluntly, if you have to ask on hacker news, you are not equipped to handle this situation and should look to either exit or enlist more capable help. Your quandary is so contingent on the specifics of you, your cofounder, and the competing directions of the company that no good advice regarding a direct action to take is possible here. That you would ask in this forum is a very bad sign that either communications have broken down or you have not attempted a conciliation.

We're trying to get this upstreamed so I actually expect PlayCanvas to talk about it in the future. Here's the reference (cpu) decoder: https://github.com/vincentwoo/blog/blob/master/3d/sutro_towe..., as well as a gpu one: https://github.com/vincentwoo/blog/blob/master/3d/sutro_towe....

For more information on the format itself you can look at https://github.com/nerfstudio-project/gsplat/blob/main/gspla....

the collision handling part is actually not that hard to back into from the splat data. i think HQ splats of everywhere is something we'll start seeing in the next decade! we haven't quite solved scaling issues, LoD, and streaming for splats but the early work is promising
