akaalias··on Show HN: My weekend project, Flair -- Like a friendly reverse Pinterest thingy
Well, it was two weekends but, yeah, pretty much! Not to forget the giants on whose shoulders I stand on to make it: Rails, Heroku, gems like Paperclip, S3, Bootstrap. The list goes on and on and on...
akaalias··on Show HN: My weekend project, Flair -- Like a friendly reverse Pinterest thingy
Thanks!

Hi debacle, it makes sense, if you already do select clothes for your wife. Of course, you can always also just aggregate links in an email, but the game mechanics at Flair do make it fun indeed :)
akaalias··on Show HN: Protect your productivity zone
Thanks, I hear you -- For the first iteration (and validation) of the product we think the simple, woodsy version does the job really well. For now.

The issue I personally have with LEDs is that they can get annoying to the people around you and, if the signal (orange/green) is essentially the same as with an analog counter-part, then what would the point really be? Of course, once electronic, you could hook in sensors to read direction etc to update your online jabber status etc (but can become gimmicky and requires a powersource of some kind, among other concerns)

akaalias··on Show HN: Protect your productivity zone
Absolutely yes.

akaalias··on Show HN: My Start-up for managing roommates
Greetings, having lived with 2 roommates for a good time period, I was very interested checking out how you are trying to solve some of the issues surrounding it.

Here is my immediate feedback:

1. Overall looks good, professional enough to trust. (Personally, not a big fan of vanilla Bootstrap 2.0. But I'll hopefully be one in thousand users who even know what that is)

2. Awesome, a clear call to action! However, I was hesitant because besides a bunch of icons and paragraphs of promises, it's not tangible how it works and how you are solving issues better than a bunch of magnets, a fridge and small pieces of paper. Add a walk-through or at least a few screenshots.

3. Login with Facebook only (as noted by others) makes sense but I'm not a big fan of this being the only option. Case in point, one of my past roommates did not have a facebook account.

4. Join or create a "Room" -- Errr... This naming made no sense (to me) whatsoever. Why are you replacing 'shared residency' or 'house' or 'apartment' with 'room'? To me, this is silly and - in my interpretation - seems like an overly clever play on the words 'room' and 'roommates'. Unless of course, you think we all sleep in bunk-beds in the same physical room (which, if you live in New York City is a possibility).

Okay, so I am now on my dashboard, I understand that my other roommates need to be invited. Okay. Instead, I'd like to poke around a bit first. I'd like to schedule/add chores, some existing bills, todos etc. so that, when they join, there is something to use/look at. Hm, that doesn't work because of some before_filter requires me to have them join first. That's a no-go for me.

Right now, I still have _no_ _idea_ how this thing works, what kind of forms/options you are going to give me and if they apply to the specific real-world situation (since there was nothing to be seen or checked-out pre-registration).

Because of the requirement of invitation, I can't move forward checking out what it does, so I'm losing interest quickly and am bound to leave and possibly never return.

Keep up! Looking forward to the next iteration :)

akaalias··on Show HN: How I Bling -- A millionaire simulation game
Right now, it's about the experience of spending. Having fun with it, be seduced and/or rational about it. It's open-ended in that regard. After a while, under 'My Stuff', you find a more general breakdown of your spending which may or may not give you insight into your own behavior and desires.

And beyond this comment thread, if you had the time to fill out a quick survey over at http://howibling.wufoo.com/forms/how-i-bling-beta-tester-eva... would be great. Thanks!

For NYC people, there is http://genspace.org/ which has intro courses several times a year. You will also make bacteria glow and smell like bananas!
akaalias··on Show HN: Pictures That Rhyme
Thank you very much!
akaalias··on Show HN: Pictures That Rhyme
Totally, makes good sense. What other APIs would you recommend?
akaalias··on Show HN: Pictures That Rhyme
And this one I like a lot, too: From fennec to MC Escher :) http://picrhyme.com/images/205/history

On a sidenote: I found that a lot of my verses end up with MC Escher.

akaalias··on Show HN: An intuitive, offline capable HTML5 mind mapping application
PS: Novamind's shortcuts are easy, too:

If you have a node selected and

* hit <TAB> it creates and preselects a new child node. * hit <SHIFT><TAB> it creates and preselects a new sibling node.

akaalias··on Show HN: An intuitive, offline capable HTML5 mind mapping application
I'm a big fan and user of mind maps and I like what you have created.

But there is one thing missing - unless I missed it:

Keyboard shortcuts to create sibling and childnodes from any given currently selected node.

The reasoning is that mind-mapping happens fast and I've refused any tool that would need me use my mouse instead of just 'throwing' nodes out there.

Please note that this was the one capability that made me not use most of the desktop apps out there and also had me pay for a license of novamind without asking twice.

Also, but this is to me secondary, the ability to make edges between random nodes can be of great benefit as well. Again, see novamind for their implementation.

Other than that, congratulations to your application!

akaalias··on Show HN: A Chrome extension for goal-based browsing
Also, there is this extension here that supports more goals: https://chrome.google.com/extensions/detail/ocnjckohbfdjdlhf... -- It works a bit differently but could be interesting as well.
akaalias··on Show HN: A Chrome extension for goal-based browsing
edit -- First of all, thank you for giving it a spin!

The reasoning to have the form available is that I think you should be able to change your goal as you please.

It could be hidden though and only shown when you opt out of the current one.

For my own experience, I've been using it for about 10 days (usually change goals once or twice a day) and it has been working out for myself.

I would definitely like to hear your progress: Is it just a nice idea or something that actually helps.

akaalias··on Show HN: A Chrome extension for goal-based browsing
I understand that, and a configuration page could take care of that. Do you think that when you're in your webmail, you would not want to see your goal? For me that's one of the places I would want to be reminded, but, again, I understand.
akaalias··on Show HN: A Chrome extension for goal-based browsing
Thanks! Just checked, I still had the .git folders that got packaged, too. The .crx file is now updated at only around 400K.
akaalias··on Ask HN: Help, I need to talk in front of a big audience & I'm scared, what now?
Very good advise!

I was in a similar situation and format, and rehearsed my presentation 100++ times. Worked out well.

In the minutes before the presentation: Breathe. Exhaling longer than inhaling will calm your nervous system substantially within a minute or two.

akaalias··on Hacker's Guide to Tea
Yes, agreed. They're very friendly and humble. The quality of their teas speaks for itself. I didn't know they had one in CA! A good tea dealer is worth so much win.
akaalias··on Hacker's Guide to Tea
Oh, for clarification: "after having been doing it that way for 12 years" means, I did it wrong for 12 years!

The above described method has proven itself to be superior to what I was doing before.

akaalias··on Hacker's Guide to Tea
Hm, I have to disagree with the steeping chart for green tea (after having been doing it that way for 12 years).

Recently, I got some medium/high quality Sencha at my favorite place Ten Ren down in Chinatown.

Lessons learned from their main man:

0. Never use boiling water, but instead around 80-85 degree Celsius (okay, that seems to be common sense) 1. If the quality of the tea is so-so, discharge the first steep after 1-2 seconds. High-grade tea needs no cleaning. This step gets rid of the dust and ensures a clear color. 2. First steeping for maximum 1 minute 30 seconds. 3. Second steeping for only about 40 (!) seconds. 4. Third steeping for about 50 seconds.

akaalias··on Land of Lisp is finally out...and has a music video.
I love this so much.
akaalias··on My Weekend Project: Not A New Yorker (Feedback Requested)
Love it, already posted one myself.

Why isn't the list ranked?

On refresh of the page, could you swap the background image? I like the one you have, but since there are probably a thousand awesome, CC-licensed images on Flickr, you could play around with that, too..

akaalias··on Ask HN: Best realtime mobile analytics with API
Hey there, our mobile analytics startup http://percentmobile.com can help you with your needs pretty quickly. It's not real-time though, but we are soon rolling out an API to plug into.

Give it a spin and let me know if it works for you!

akaalias··on Are you rich? If so, how did you get there?
Agreed very much. That pretty much sums it up. (@alttab)
akaalias··on Meditation Becomes Beneficial Surprisingly Fast
I started daily zazen meditation about 6 weeks ago, having tried it on and off before. The effects are subtle but powerful, providing me with patience and a hightened state of relaxed alertness. Combined with Yoga ever other day, it feels great!

If anyone is interested, I built this webapp for myself to keep track of my progress. My meditation training can be found at http://stepset.com/habits/efac7b8e-6446-11df-ab99-7f306a906e...
