akaalias··on Spotting iPads in the wild.
Hi, yeah, I agree, it was my first impression, too.

It would be interesting, but for some sites we can't disclose the destination domain. What we could do however is to show which _type_ of site was visited.

Hi mcantor,

I thought the iPad map to be of interest here at HN, because it gives proof that the devices are in active use although not yet in the market.

Maybe not hugely surprising, but at least factual from our base of data, you can see that there is traffic coming in from SF, NYC and even India on different types of networks.

We (Being a co-founder of PercentMobile) regularly start seeing devices that are being used on the networks, of which some aren't even officially acknowledged to be in existence. (Obviously, the iPad has been confirmed at this point)

I think sharing this kind of data is a good idea, in hope that it creates and feeds curiosity and awareness of the mobile ecosystem. How intellectually valuable it is for everyone, I am not able to answer. I don't know.

What would you like to know (if anything) about the mobile ecosystem? What kind of perspectives on what's currently happening on the mobile web would be nurturing your intellectual curiosity?

I wasn't sure what "launch" meant. At first I thought it was submitted to news sites and blogs and twitter automatically.

I can see the confusion there, yes, thank you. I'll have to brainstorm a bit on that, because that first line is obviously most crucial..

A list of current secrets is coming in a bit, don't you think though that they would be too out of context to appreciate?

At least my initial idea was that I share something valuable with a few friends. Of which maybe just 1 or 2 finally wind up being able to read the message (due to timing, interest). It seems to me that because it was shared among friends, and because you have to wait, and for it to become a limited resource, is what creates the additional 'value' here.

Just playing around with it myself, sending little secret messages out to friends, has been really interesting. The ones that time it right kind of 'nod' back in a we-two-now-share-something-secret kind of way, where the ones that missed it, go nuts because I won't tell them now.

For the UI, thanks, I always wanted to make a textarea HUGE.

I think the name works in favor of what the thing does. Luckily it was available.

Thank you very much. On the note of design, I would have a little secret to share with you: http://spillbound.com/secrets/34 :D
akaalias··on Ask HN: What's the Mobile Browser Distribution for your site?

We're still in private beta, but you can use the invite-code 'yayhooray' (w/o quotes) to signup.

akaalias··on Geo.js, Building location-aware mobile websites with Javascript
To me, in the context of mobile websites, it provides an answer/option to providing localized content. Given you have/want localized content/filtering of course.

Where up until now, the first answer to 'You want GPS location?' would have been 'You'll need a native app.', it's now possible to just built a webapp instead.

At least for requests that came our way for building native apps for the iPhone, the most requested feature was 'ZOMG, make it localizable!', where the rest would be just pulling data from a server.

Now, my option is to just built a mobile webapp that can use the lat/lng without much fuss (still needs to degrade gracefully in case of older phones/browsers of course).

Yep, you are right, FF 3.5 is being provided with location by the Google Location Service (http://google-code-updates.blogspot.com/2009/04/google-locat...). Also, this service implements http://dev.w3.org/geo/api/spec-source.html, which should, once widely adopted, void the need of a wrapper library such as geo.js posted here.

Edit: Typo

akaalias··on Review my app: For you NYC Hackers/Subway Riders
It's exactly what I always do, especially for fastest transfers and being the first one on the stairs. Recently I have been taking the 6, L and G a lot, terra incognito where your app comes in fitting perfectly. Love it!

Edit: Installed it, very smooth operation, took less than 6 seconds to find a perfect exit strategy for L -> 6 train transfer. Nice!

akaalias··on PercentMobile - Free Mobile Analytics
Hi eli,

concerning devices (and networks, too) you are very right: It's pretty wild out there and it takes a lot of detail to make sense out of it.

Most of our device detection goes beyond the user-agent string to accurately detect devices. At the moment, we are able to identify 99,8% of devices, even if the request was proxied (via Opera, for example) or transcoded (via Novarra for example).

akaalias··on PercentMobile - Free Mobile Analytics
Hi HN community,

we just released PercentMobile, a simple analytics tool to help find out the percentage of mobile traffic to desktop websites.

Have a look at the sample report at http://percentmobile.com/percentmobile/report/32

We're still in a public beta, but if you want to start tracking your own website, use 'hackernews' (w/o the quotes) as the invite-code.

Your feedback is very welcome!

Alexis

akaalias··on Do you set goals?
Re: - how do you keep focus, avoid distractions, and keep attacking the goal?

Keeping focus researching/browsing often is for me the hardest thing (http://xkcd.com/214/ describes it best). I built this mini-mini-mini webapp for myself called defumble.com to remind me of what it actually was that I set out to find.
