ajyotirmay··on Fix the iOS keyboard before the timer hits zero or I'm switching back to Android
Frankly, just switch the stock keyboard. It's 2026, this should be working on that ancient Egyptian joke of an OS.

If not, Apple users deserve this kind of behaviour where the user willingly signs off on their freedom

ajyotirmay··on India orders smartphone makers to preload state-owned cyber safety app
All that couldn be as simple as educating people that there is no such thing as "digital arrest".

You are just telling the whole world about the average IQ of an Indian and how they believe in foolish things like "digital arrest".

And an app doesn't solve that. Digital literacy is a need for today, but the entire country is getting the latest smartphone, with dirt cheap data and zero knowledge of how to operate and own that technology.

ajyotirmay··on India orders smartphone makers to preload state-owned cyber safety app
IRCTC is a private company. UPI isn't government either. Which e-filling portal is working nicely for you? My ITR was stuck for more than a year because some lame ass dev couldn't show proper error message other than suggesting that something needed to be done by my bank (which wasn't the case and only a year later did I decide to dig into th3 dev tools).

To praise Indian government is the most unlikely thing one should be doing for their mediocrity at developing things.

Same is the case with Aadhar, Digiyatra, etc. My government is hella incompetent at safeguarding data and privacy (unless it's their own data). And this app is 100% going to be a huge security hole on every device.

For me, ADB to the resuce.

ajyotirmay··on Google Workspace Updates: Send Gmail end-to-end encrypted emails to anyone
Not a clue about what you're seeking. I'm using mailbox, and thunderbird as a client for my devices (android, windows, linux and macos).

It works. For E2EE, I have GPG setup on all of my devices. It costs me a little over €1/month for paid account as I use my own domain.

The experience has been good, and something I absolutely advocate for and promote.

ajyotirmay··on Google Workspace Updates: Send Gmail end-to-end encrypted emails to anyone
Valid concern. I have been decoupling my dependency on Google for quite some time now

I'm sorry, but today I don't recommend Ubuntu to event people who are very familiar with Linux Distros. I'm personally using Debian Testing on my daily driver, and Debian Stable on my home server.

I started with Linux Mint, then Ubuntu. I don't remember which Ubuntu it was, but it had Gnome 2 and then later had fun with the Unity Desktop versions. When they started being the bully, I started distro hopping and then finally settled with Debian (because of my personal values as well). I can't trust a for-profit company to care about its users. Today I try to use as many FOSS alternatives and projects supported by community.

Ubuntu is no better than Windows 11 at this point. It's just lesser evil of two. Try something else, Pop_OS!, Linux Mint, Manjaro Linux, Fedora, etc. Plenty of good options out there. Debian too, if you don't want a solid stable long term OS.

I guess such interactive elements always show the current state of the system, and when they are interacted with, it changes the state it was in, examples: 1. Social media buttons for upvotes/likes/dislikes 2. on/off toggle switches for features 3. microphone/speaker buttons on desktop OSes

ajyotirmay··on The hidden cost of air quality monitoring
Hi, I get your point. Thus, whenever I'm looking for a product on amazon, I go to the website of manufacturer and try to get the intended product from there.

It can be a bit of hassle sometime, like having to pay for shipping or the delay in receiving it compared to amazon prime, or the option for return.

But apart from covering the shipping (which sometimes is okay for a product with higher value), I prefer to use the original website instead of Amazon. Few reasons being:

1. Genuine product 2. I don't want to help Amazon grow its huge empire 3. I want to support independent companies

So, hearing your comment, I'm glad I'm doing the right thing

ajyotirmay··on The EARN IT bill is back, seeking to scan our messages and photos
Also, "you have nothing to hide" is so wrong, that people fail to understand that privacy isn't about hiding your private life, but having the power to sharing those details with consent and when you're comfortable sharing them. Just because you don't have nothing to hide, doesn't mean anyone can walk in your private life and peek into all corners.

And as you mentioned, power will be abused. Unchecked power will be abused unchecked. This is ethically, morally and humanely wrong.

There's so much wrong with this bill and the thought behind it. It should never see the day of light.

ajyotirmay··on ARM64 Linux Workstation
Difficult debating a fan's love with logic, right? This person is so aggressively justifying the MacOS decisions
ajyotirmay··on ARM64 Linux Workstation
Why are you so aggressively defending a trashy product? I can't reliably alt+tab on a MacOS to switch between windows and apps, there are hidden shortcuts, 3 modifier keys make it a nightmare to wrap my head around shortcuts, window tiling is trash (thanks for the save Rectangle), iTunes randomly popping up when I use my BT headset, applications need to be "quit", closing just isn't enough, but some apps quit when their last window is closed, weird! Stage manager, virtual desktop, a broken dock. It's a nightmare. MS Windows have invented such a cool way of switching between multiple windows of the same app, doesn't matter if those are minimised or not.

Oh, and Macs have a hide and minimise feature, wow! Just a cluster fuck entirely. Gazillion different ways of installing applications and then managing all those updates separately (a lot like Windows in that regard). These are all issues I face on a regular basis, haven't even dived into developer experience.

ajyotirmay··on India lifted 415M out of poverty in 15 years, says UN
> As for the being a nation state part, sometimes I think we would have been better off in an EU type situation rather than being one large entity.

I have the same idea. But I'm not very sure about it, specially because our divide has been the main cause of Britishers colonizing us. An united single state gives us much more resources to function properly and defend our interest against neighbors like Pakistan & China.

I could be wrong though, as EU seems to be a good example of governance

ajyotirmay··on India lifted 415M out of poverty in 15 years, says UN
Your comment makes me feel like you don't understand India at all. At the time of independence, we were robbed of our resources by the west. Our country was divided with individual identity. Poverty, economy and quality of life were pretty bad thanks to England.

"school meals" allowed families to be able to send kids to school for education instead of getting their help at work to feed families. That means, more people were inclined towards getting education and literacy. Which was a huge deal for our country at that time.

>The Non-Aligned movement? India would have been much richer, much more quickly, if they were to have aligned themselves with the West.

India "might" have been richer without NAM but did you not notice what our close relationship with west did to us? Also, that richness would have made us into a failed state like USA (yes, I know about US' homelessness, lack of social security, and the greedy capitalism). We needed to stand on our own feet before we could make alliances. Heck, the west is still opposed to India till now. As much as I dislike Russian politics, our partnership with Russia has actually helped us develop much quicker (and yes, it was a partnership in every sense)

Indian constitution was needed, specifically because our country is so much more diverse. Are you seriously comparing a tiny piece of land (HK) to a huge landmass like India, which has hundreds of different cultures, identities, religions, languages. We absolutely needed a code to unify our country. We are still very diverse, but our unified under a single identity of Indian.

And since you folks actually acknowledge the atrocities of Nazi Germany, you should definitely look into India's colonial history. You'll understand the storm we had to endure, and what we were left with once we kicked those colonizers out of our land.

ajyotirmay··on Meta lays off 11,000 people
The first thing that comes to my mind is the whole Snowden series of events. Spying every citizen, is wrong. Also, I'm seeing the effects of something similar in my country, where this sort of spying is used to curb free speech, dissent, and completely kill the very essence of democracy.

It is wrong, and there has to be better ways. I don't remember the exact procedure, but NSA didn't need much clearance to spy on any American citizen.

ajyotirmay··on Podman Desktop: A Free OSS Alternative to Docker Desktop
Using podman since March of 2022. The experience has been nice, and the ability to run containers under user without going root is definitely nice. Good to see it getting some recognition.
ajyotirmay··on Why modern software is slow
This is the exact issue I face at my present job. Our clients have low budgets for hosting, and that means code needs to be as optimized as possible.

Sadly, the people I report to don't care enough about it. All they want is to push through the visible changes as fast as possible. And every single time these performance bugs come to bite us.

Our solution? Scale the system resources.

I'm not particularly satisfied with the work. But as an engineer I don't get to call the shots.

ajyotirmay··on Mozilla reaffirms that Firefox will continue to support current content blockers
One serious criticism of Mozilla is the fact that a major chunk of that money goes into the CEO's pockets and doesn't get spent on Firefox.

That single fact makes me reluctant to pay for Firefox. Unless I'm sure that all the money I donate goes to the right cause and not to a CEO's bank.

ajyotirmay··on Linux on the laptop works so damn well that it’s boring
A lot of argument here complaints that Linux is broken outside of Linux specific vendors or ThinkPads.

Well, how did it go for you to try and run MacOS on non-Apple hardware?

Maybe, sure you get a better experience with hardware supported by Linux. But that's a lot of bias in your opinion.

ajyotirmay··on Reasons to ditch Chrome and use Firefox
However Google does it to avoid anticompetitive lawsuit, and not for helping snoop on users for Google
ajyotirmay··on Reasons to ditch Chrome and use Firefox
Firefox is here to stay. Or so I hope. It's my daily driver, and I definitely prefer it over Chromium's uncertain future of curbing ad blockers.

I work in web development, and all our products are built with 100% compatibility with Firefox and it being the priority browser. The rest are secondary including Chromium based ones.

If it works on FF, it works elsewhere (except that steaming pile of crap that Safari is)

I still wonder, how blacklist/whitelist or master/slave has helped or promoted slavery and racism.

And how many devs who are from black communities offended by the use of these terms, at least before it was made to be an issue in mainstream.

Because right now I feel like this is a "woke feminist" issue.

And I'm not a white person. I've never thought otherwise of these words, but maybe that can be because of the mixed society I grew up in.
