ajurna··on 'Expensive' Streaming Services Are a Key Reason for Americans to 'Pirate'
1. 10-15 dollars a month is not exorbitant and quite worth it with a media server.

2. sabnzbbd or nzgget are hardly poorly documented or undiscoverable.

3. you need to get an indexer which handles all those files over 2 million posts. the software in 2 will put them together for you with minimal effort.

i would recommend a premium indexer as they are quite cheap but there are free available.

i would also like to note that since you're not using a torrent you can't be done for distribution of copywritten material to the same scale as you can for a torrent.

ajurna··on Copyright doesn't need 95 years to get the job done
i think the argument goes that all human culture is remixed from human culture. if you write a book it's safe to say you have borrowed from other works of culture. you might have put a new spin on it but that isn't to say you have created something wholly new. how could you possibly claim to have crated a new artistic work uninfluenced by previously created artistic works? thus how much of this work do you truly own?

when you look at the Disney animation classic's back catalogue you see an awful lot of work from the commons. does this not display the value of having these works in the commons?

ajurna··on Brits head home to avoid being deported as illegals in Spain
yes but if you flip the numbers is gets weird. a third of expats in Italy wanted the UK to leave the EU? that doesn't mean it would be hard to find someone to interview for "entertainment". Every third group should have someone.
ajurna··on Forever chemicals are widespread in U.S. drinking water
i totally agree. in Ireland we had a lot of grumbling about it at the time but the impact on plastic pollution in the streets and fields and roads has been massive.

plastic straw ban has little impact mostly because people tend to leave their drinks in the fast food restaurant rather than take them home. it't not as obvious that it's helping and aren't the cups coated in plastic?

ajurna··on OnlyFans Faces Allegations of Fraud, Theft
far more likely its "morally" motivated. because this site is corrupting people or some such.
ajurna··on OnlyFans Faces Allegations of Fraud, Theft
what about lap dances? they are certainly physical contact.
ajurna··on U.S. Population Growth Has Been Driven Exclusively by Minorities
so it's womens fault? maybe if pay and conditions were better and they had more stability they would want families earlier.
ajurna··on Statement by a quarantined nurse from a northern California Kaiser facility [pdf]
you're right! lets just let the free market decide! /s

in reality though these are private institutions run with private money. how can you blame the government when it seems they have little interest in acknowledging there is a problem in the first case.

ajurna··on I Brainwashed Myself with the Internet
While a home-birth can be quite safe i'm astonished to hear about a community that would ignore the need for a midwife. midwifery is probably the second oldest profession and every community and culture around the world has an equivalent. I cannot see any benefit for not having at least this much.
ajurna··on Open Source LibreTorrent Client Kicked Out by Google Play
Kids who don't have a laptop or desktop. This may be the only "computer" they have access to.
ajurna··on First carbon dioxide battery is seven times more efficient than lithium-ion
naive question but could we resolve this with asteroid mining?
ajurna··on Battle over Encrypted DNS
is it beyond them to supply their own DoT or DoH services (maintaining the info they have) and then using that as a selling point?
ajurna··on Start a New Union for Tech Workers. Please
the only issue i can think of in tech is protecting tech employee's from being fired for refusing to work on unethical software.
ajurna··on Juul Labs CEO to Step Down
what's unique is that juul goes at 50mg of nic, where most small operators would stop at 20mg. with step downs all the way to 0mg. juul only offers 50mg. (20mg in Europe as that is the legal max)
ajurna··on A person has died from a vaping-related condition
i have to disagree. you're both wrong. the most common in all coils is Kanthal A1. If your building your own coils then NI200 is quite popular atm, but most tank and coil systems use Kanthal.
ajurna··on Juul, Philip Morris Sued Under Racketeer Act for Targeting Kids
This is a case of particularly bad reporting. These cases are all related not to nicotine but to THC and other drugs being tainted.

ajurna··on Ask HN: Tech crowd – What are your ideas for solving gun violence using tech?
You are making a claim. You are claiming that both sides a equally likely to resort to guns and as such the burden of proof on that claim lies with you.
ajurna··on Uber 'came to our shores, illegally, like pirates', class action plaintiff says
we had similar problems in ireland with taxi's but this was solved not by uber but by deregulation.

Under this we got thousands more taxi's who are all registered and have public liability insurance.

Under Irish law you have to have a taxi or hackny license in order to transport anyone so it is illegal for uber to operate here, but with the selection of other apps like lync with work quite well in our regulatory enviroment this has been a great result!

ajurna··on Petition: Revoke Article 50 and remain in the EU
To be fair its heading north of 750,000 as i type. That's not insignificant considering its only been open 24 hours or so.
ajurna··on DARPA Is Building a $10M, Open-Source, Secure Voting System
This happens in Ireland. results are all hand counted with representatives from all parties and public access to watch the counting.

After a vote we get to watch the news go from counting station to station to announce the results.

There are usually a few recounts etc but it rarely takes longer than a day or two and tbh which is more important done right or fast?

ajurna··on At my 18th CES tech show, I felt unwelcome
bit tongue in cheek but ever been to a mall? at least here its all aimed at women.
ajurna··on Today’s JavaScript trash fire and pile on
how about left-pad?
ajurna··on Show HN: Online Regex Tester for PHP, PCRE, Python, Golang and JavaScript
great tool! well worth checking out if you haven't already!
ajurna··on Show HN: A Tic Tac Toe “AI” Built with Only HTML and CSS
there's a bug where it claims i lost when i didn't. bottom left, top right, bottom right, middle right. it will then say green wins.
ajurna··on Ask HN: Could programmers convince society not to use software voting systems?
please watch this: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=w3_0x6oaDmI it has a good list of reasons why software voting is a terrible idea.

also the secret ballet is very important to maintaining the fairness of elections.

ajurna··on Show HN: Empirical Vision – Our AI Turns Webcams into Productivity Trackers
I have so many problems with this it's hard to articulate. from pithy "1984 called and they want you to make home televisions" to scary "micromanaging your employee's to a soul destroying level"

This is like reading an advert for a dystopian corporate overlord future.

i look forward to the report that manages each individuals productivity to the point that when it goes below a certain level you just replace them like a worn cog.

But sure, you do you!

ajurna··on Ask HN: What do you believe that most people don't?
That we are all part of a macro-organism. we all act as parts of the body and the more we organise the more we collectively grow.

populations that are decimated lose massive amounts of knowledge and only increase in numbers increases the complexity of the technology.

in a lot of ways we act like cells in the human body. nothing tells them to be what they are, they find an opening and fill the role required of them.

this doesn't mean we are going anywhere specific, but it does mean that as we work together our collect potential grows.

ajurna··on The Nation indulges in fear mongering about cell phones and cancer
Truly we most certainly would all be dead from cancer with the amount of mobile phones out there and carried around by everyone.
ajurna··on Couple that paid $90k for a private street in SF is forced to give it back
The article did say it was a $14 Million Dollar tax bill.
ajurna··on Artificial Intelligence Isn't Killing Jobs; It's Killing Business Models
