ajmarsh··on Cursive Seemed to Go the Way of Quills and Parchment. Now It’s Coming Back
How is there time for this, and not a financial literacy class? Kids are graduating HS with no real life skills to speak of yet we have time for this?
ajmarsh··on SPARCbook 3000ST
I wanted one of these really bad back in the day. Had to settle for running Solarisx86 on a generic laptop instead. Nice find.
ajmarsh··on Thousands of New Millionaires Are About to Eat San Francisco Alive
What percentage of people head home after a liquidy event? The bay area was great and all but the money spends a lot better back here in flyover country.
ajmarsh··on Windows 98 Icons are Great (2015)
I 100% agree. The BeOS icon set remains my personal favorite to this day. When I run Linux I usually load them up first thing.

ajmarsh··on Secure and Ad-Free Internet Anywhere with Streisand and Pi Hole
I would be willing to pay a decent premium to be able to buy a replacement cable modem with this built in. Cool project.
ajmarsh··on Ask HN: What should a systems/low-level software engineer know?
This seems like a good place to start.

ajmarsh··on The Overloaded Soldier: Why U.S. Infantry Now Carry More Weight Than Ever
Yep, the G11. Turns out with all its other problems caseless ammo is brittle, so if you drop a round it breaks. Not super practical in the field.

ajmarsh··on Six-Year homelab history in pictures
Certification prep mostly, some concepts are best not tested out at work.
ajmarsh··on Six-Year homelab history in pictures
Nice write up and photos. I used to maintain a lab like this only my cable management was nowhere near as nice as his. I've replaced this all with a combination of AWS and an Antsle. I miss the hands-on hardware time but don't miss the fan noise.
ajmarsh··on Is Windows 10 still telling what you're doing even if you don't want it to?
I've been using https://github.com/hahndorf/Set-Privacy with good success. Automate with the orchestration tool of your choice.
ajmarsh··on Las Vegas Housing Weakness Signals the Slowdown Is Spreading
Approximately 641,676 in 2017.
ajmarsh··on Tell HN: Amazon now owns 3.0.0.0/8
The xkcd map will need an update.

ajmarsh··on Ask HN: How to organize personal knowledge?
I loved OneNote until I tried to put some code snippets into it. Somehow over time they become unusable for cut and paste into *nix systems. Did you find a way to overcome this? I have no time to dos2unix everything.
ajmarsh··on That time I had Steve Jobs keynote at Unix Expo
I'd say yes. Anything that reduces friction in commerce thereby creates more commerce. Time will tell I guess.
ajmarsh··on Who Are These Economists, Anyway? (2009) [pdf]
Is there a rating agency for economists and their predictions?
ajmarsh··on Susan Kare designed the suite of icons that made the Macintosh revolutionary
Ah the icons of my youth, quite awesome. However, for me, the BeOS icon set has not been toped. When I first installed BeOS I remember being totally blown away by them.

ajmarsh··on Amazon developing three new sci-fi series: Lazarus, Snow Crash and Ringworld
Gil the Arm would make such a great detective show. I hope Ringworld is successful so Amazon develops the rest of Larry Niven's known universe properties.
ajmarsh··on The Unexpected Rebirth of Google Glass
The current resolution of Glass is like 640x360 correct? When they hit around 3840×2160 I would be able to use them as a primary display. That would have some interesting possibilities.
ajmarsh··on Ask HN: Is AWS S3 down?
11:58 AM PDT We are investigating increased error rates for Amazon S3 requests in the US-EAST-1 Region.

12:21 PM PDT We can confirm that some customers are receiving throttling errors accessing S3. We are currently investigating the root cause.

ajmarsh··on Delete Facebook Account
My favorite article on the subject. Unfortunately, it's down had to use the Wayback machine to find it.

ajmarsh··on How Grammarly Grew to 6.9M Daily Users in 9 Years
It works with MS office as well as having their own editor you can use. For unsupported apps, I just cut and paste it into their editor.
ajmarsh··on How Grammarly Grew to 6.9M Daily Users in 9 Years
I love the weekly report. You are more productive than x% of Grammarly users. You are more accurate than y%. X always makes me feel good, Y not so much.
ajmarsh··on Love it or hate it, truckers say they can’t stop listening to public radio
Yes but we also have to live in the real world. It's on the air so you might as well take advantage of that.
ajmarsh··on Radical Honesty: I Think You’re Fat (2007)
So a guy named Blanton drinks Maker's Mark? That's messed up.
ajmarsh··on A ghostly radio station that no one claims to run
Neet, I used to listen to machine sent morse code number stations as a kid on my shortwave.

ajmarsh··on GNUstep LiveCD 2017
GNUstep is like a barn find Corvette. Sure it has rust on the frame and the paint is ugly and the upholstery ruined. However, it's low miles on the original engine. With a bit of work could be an extremely valuable show car.

I feel like cars make a better analogy.

ajmarsh··on Show HN: Is the stock market going to crash?
Are you in the market presently or have you pulled out again?
ajmarsh··on Tesla's Asymmetric War Against the Auto Industry
Business ≠ War. That said I think Tesla's strategy is a good one.
