ajma··on Ask HN: Is 170k a good salary for a software developer in Seattle?
Level comparison across companies is useless. People who were first-level managers at Microsoft didn't even have manager in their title (it was lead, but that's changed recently). Then at a second-level manager, you would get manager in your title. Most other companies will have manager in your title when you're first-level managers. The job was the same, the just called it different things. I've talked to many people who worked both at Amazon and Microsoft and we've learned how to calibrate to say what level at Microsoft = what level at Amazon, but it's not a clean split.

Also, some smaller tech companies will inflate titles to try to compete for talent. Like I met someone who's a VP of engineering, they have a total team size of 2. That's not the same as a VP at Facebook. If that guy got an offer for one level lower, that would be a huge step up.

Um, I don't want one plus one to equal three.
ajma··on Why I wouldn’t use Rails for a new company
Article might show a trend that rails jobs are declining, but that's not true for my team. I'm looking to hire 12 ruby/rails engineers between New York and Seattle offices.

ajma··on Hot-Fix for Android Apps by Alibaba
I think it's against Google terms of use if you hot-download code without going through the play store. Isn't that why Facebook got kicked out when they added a beta testing functionality in their app (they've since moved to a Google play beta testing experience)

ajma··on Ask HN: Is this a good package for an Engineering Manager in Seattle?
As an engineering manager who has been in 3 major tech companies here. I would say that's a good offer. I'm going to guess that signing bonus is over two years (pretty typical here), and stock is over 4 years (pretty typical here too). So you're looking at around a ~$250k/year salary. I know some engineering managers that have a higher total comp, but I know many more engineering managers that have a lower total comp.

Other things to consider (if you're comparing to bay area) is that total cost of living is much lower here and WA has no state tax.

ajma··on Ask HN: Is this a good package for an Engineering Manager in Seattle?
Can't be Amazon. They cap base salary to $160k.

ajma··on Ask HN: Dealing with Failed Interview at Google and AWS?
Also, feel free to try again if you feel like you would like working there.
ajma··on Ask HN: Dealing with Failed Interview at Google and AWS?
I interviewed 3 times with Amazon before I got an offer from them. And then when I was there, I kicked ass. There's little correlation between the interviews and how good you actually are. Also, while I was at Amazon, I did probably over a hundred interviews (in person and phone screens). Interviewing in hard and there are a lot of very bad interviewers there. They try to keep a similar bar across the company, but I found it to be very inconsistent from team to team. AWS tends to be one of the harder teams to interview for.
ajma··on Ask HN: Looking for examples of html5 apps that feel native
did they launch games on ios too?
ajma··on Ask HN: Looking for examples of html5 apps that feel native
I've seen famo.us too. Same comment as my one for Ionic. The website for famo.us has some pretty good demos, but I'm looking for a launched app that actually uses it.
ajma··on Ask HN: Looking for examples of html5 apps that feel native
I'm looking at Ionic as my first choice right now. The showcase apps aren't really that great. They seem like side-projects. I'm looking for an example of a larger project.

The framework looks good on the website, I'm just looking for a fairly popular app that's actually launched with it.

ajma··on Computer Science: the 8th Highest Paid College Major
I seriously doubt the numbers here. CS majors start at $60k? That's what I started at 12 years ago and that was the height of the dom-com bust. I've managed software engineers at a couple different companies so I have a small sample of data, but they all start at $100k for a college hire. (and I'm not in the bay area, so no bay area cost-of-living adjustment)

ajma··on Poll: What Web Application Framework do you use?
.NET Framework isn't a web framework. ASP.NET is the web framework that runs on .NET. Even then ASP.NET has two distinctly different options. ASP.NET MVC and ASP.NET Webforms.
