aivisol··on Solar superflares hit Earth multiple times
Cumbre Vieja megatsunami please as well.
aivisol··on My dishwasher won’t start until I let it update its firmware over the WiFi
Mine dumb model beeps when its done its cycle. It's a good notification for me. If I run it overnight, I don't really care at which hour it finished. Am I missing something else?
aivisol··on Reducing inequality can reverse political polarisation: study
You are joking, right? And everyone was equal except some who were more equal.
aivisol··on Python Communist Revolution
Tell that to those nations which lost large percentage of their population to communist terror.
aivisol··on Surviving the desert by building a motorcycle from a broken car? (2017)
Done this with my dad's Lada. Fuel hose ruptured (rusted through?) in the middle of nowhere and I installed a hose directly from engine inlet (the car had fuel pump mounted on the side of engine powered by crankshaft) running through the firewall right to the small fuel container sitting just on the floor under my legs. It worked and got me home. Please never ever try to repeat it.
aivisol··on The Demise of Scientific American
Mention of SciAm always brings back memories. It was one of the few western scientific magazines available in former Soviet Union in 80s and was issued in translated and probably censored version, but still. My father figured that it was somehow possible to get a subscription for it and we received our monthly copy for several years. That is where a learned about things like Mandelbrot fractals and Conways Game of Life and wrote my own implementations in BASIC later when I got hold of my first computer. Sad to see things coming down so badly since then.
aivisol··on Practical Transformer Winding (2010)
Winding your own transformer was one of those things which amazed me as a teenager: you do a simple math by calculating winding ratio and the voltage is changed at the secondary by magic...
aivisol··on Hidden Networks in TP-Link Routers
Mikrotik SXT LTE6 works for me as I am in a very remote place. RouterOS is really great piece of software, you have web based GUI, you have fully featured CLI with all things you need from router: NAT, firewall, port forward, I cannot name them all, I believe I barely use few % of what is inside. Ubiquiti UAP-AC as an AP.
aivisol··on Apple CEO Tim Cook 'secretly' signed $275B deal with China in 2016
True, and people knew it. I used to travel on the bicycle with the help of USSR maps made in early eighties (due to unavailability of other options), and yes, what you saw on the map was sometimes very different from what was in the real life, especially if you were close to the external border.
aivisol··on Apple CEO Tim Cook 'secretly' signed $275B deal with China in 2016
Can you elaborate on this? I am curious to know more about it.
aivisol··on Hetzner now provides IPv6 only dedicated servers
I am running dedicated servers on Hetzner since 2008 (max I had was 10 root servers at a time). Outages were quite common back in a day, both sudden server reboots and HDD failures. However, for last 5+ years I haven't got any single outage. Support is always very quick to react and you could usually get HDD replaced same day.
aivisol··on The Humble Brilliance of Italy's Moka Coffee Pot (2018)
Came to know these devices after moving from Northern Europe to South few years ago. First two of these were destroyed when I repeatedly forgot to fill them with water - the plastic handle just melted before I realized my error. Seals usually last years even if you use the device several times a day. Apart from that, they indeed never break.
aivisol··on The Married Will Soon Be the Minority
> We're not having many of these now. Population growth is now driven mostly by immigration.

Suggested correction: We're not having many of these now in this <country name>

aivisol··on Impact of the Covid-19 Pandemic on Early Child Cognitive Development
Not that it is surprising, it is rather being constantly ignored.
aivisol··on SARS-CoV-2 Lambda variant exhibits higher infectivity and immune resistance
Cannot agree more with you. Fingers crossed that "scientific process" is not influenced by political/economic agenda.
aivisol··on Climate change: IPCC report is 'code red for humanity'
The highest bar in the chart says "have one fewer child". It actually exceeds any others by extremely large margin [0]. How is that even considered as the option? One child less means halving population after every generation. Eliminate the population and problem solved?

aivisol··on Summer 2021 has changed our understanding of extreme weather
Eastern European here as well. This year is definitely not your average warmer-than-usually year. Both the winter was extremely cold here where I live (down to -30C) and also there was prolonged heatwave spanning from mid June to end of July with temperatures well in +30s and no rain for more than a month. It will have negative impact on agriculture for sure, especially crops. On the other hand, watching on the news the recent floods in Germany and Belgium I recall seeing similar events in those countries in the pre-global warming times (when most of us knew nothing about it). Then they told us that the reason for the floods is excessive drainage and elimination of swamps and wetlands. They are supposed to act as sponges taking and absorbing excess precipitation and then releasing it when the rains are over. That made a good point because where I live we have plenty of swamps around us and never see such floods apart from seasonal spring thaw induced ones (which are more or less predictable and controllable). So maybe we should not put all our bets into getting all carbon out of atmosphere (which is no simple task) but also see if local ecosystems can be fixed to achieve some quicker wins.
aivisol··on Falsehoods Programmers Believe About Phone Numbers (2016)
18. Phone numbers contain only digits

This one was not obvious, but sure it is possible. DTMF [0] encodes digits 0-9, symbols * and # as well as letters A to D.

aivisol··on I've got a broken combine harvester – manufacturer won't give me software key
Because the harvest happens at the same time for all farmers? The harvesting machine will be idle for most of the time anyway, so there can only be one renter at the time (unless you will ship it to Southern hemisphere for half of the year).
aivisol··on The House That Vanished
Well, he did buy the house (article says) not built it, so the sight of the house probably was there already for years if not for decades. They most probably didn't like that the house was bought by outsider.
aivisol··on Europe’s aggressive new emissions rules put gas engines on notice
> much simpler to own and maintain.

As a person who never owned an EV I am curious to know how it is simpler to maintain it?

aivisol··on Tour of the server room in the Airbus 350
I very much hope that is not the case. As a passenger I would not be very happy seeing pilot's friends going in and out of cockpit during the flight.
aivisol··on My experiments with sprouting legumes
Closer to few hectares if you want to be self-sufficient.

Our greenhouse is 60m2 + vegetable garden around 200m2 + few dozen apple trees and some other fruit trees. The season is not very long here (NE Europe), so we basically start to harvest lettuce, radish and spring onions some time end of May and from that moment on we basically switch to "home grown" diet if you wish which lasts into late October or so.

The part about tomatoes and cucumbers is very true. Once they start to bear fruit, you need to have your preservation or distribution plan ready or they will be wasted.

That said, we have to visit supermarket weekly anyway...

aivisol··on Baltic airlines reroute flights to avoid Belarus airspace
International community just lifted sanctions against this little thing:

aivisol··on Try This One Weird Trick Russian Hackers Hate
Also, whoever made that table: the language is "Ukrainian" not "Ukranian"
aivisol··on How to design a sailing ship for the 21st century?
> However, by definition, the sailing ship is not a carbon neutral technology. For most of history, sailing ships were built from wood, but back then whole forests were felled for ships, and those trees often did not grow back.

I do not understand this sentence. If I cut down a tree and do not burn it, isn't it a carbon neutral process? It did not release any carbon into atmosphere. By this logic is there any material to use to build something which is neutral?

aivisol··on Lumber mania is sweeping North America
YMMV: As an European I have my house almost completely built from wood: structure frame, roof beams, floors, exterior siding, interior floor, doors, window frames, furniture etc. I would not call it a forest cabin, it is very real house, with 2 floors.
aivisol··on The knackerman: the toughest job in British farming
The whole concept of thinking about animals dumber than they are makes killing them more acceptable.
aivisol··on CR Engineers Show a Tesla Will Drive with No One in the Driver's Seat
Yeah. Even my small lawn tractor has a seat sensor...
aivisol··on CR Engineers Show a Tesla Will Drive with No One in the Driver's Seat
I think a sensor in the seat is pretty standard thing nowadays in almost every car. It is used to alert you when you or your passenger has forgotten to fasten a seat belt.
