I especially love the labcoats :)
aidog··on Ruby 3.2’s YJIT is Production-Ready
Funny that you say that. If AI writes code, it should be Ruby, because it's shorter and easier to read. I'm making a site and love ChatGPTs Ruby code.

PS: Any Microsoft people here? Ruby could be 10x faster on Windows, if we figure out how to load files faster! https://bugs.ruby-lang.org/issues/19325#note-11

aidog··on PHP in 2023
PHP runs a lot of my projects. Always grateful for the effort that goes into it. Deploying is very easy using git. Composer makes it easy to install libraries.

For the makers: with these packages you can easily make a nice blog/site with minimal amount of code and files.

https://phprouter.com (one file router!) https://github.com/EFTEC/BladeOne (Laravel Style Blade Templates, but much less files) https://parsedown.org (markdown library)

aidog··on Ask HN: Who’s using Ruby for web development, without Ruby on Rails?
Made my "own" static page generator using chatgpt recently: kramdown for markdown, erb for layout, filewatcher to reprocess on file changes, rss and sitemap. docker-compose file with nginx pointed at the out directory. Deploying with git. Works great.
aidog··on 2022: The year English became a programming language
So on Saturday night after skiing, I had this urge to figure out, if I could actually make an almost useful app just with a few prompts of ChatGPT. I also wanted to make sure it doesn't just steal somebody else's code, so I tried something I assumed nobody has made yet: a sticky notes desktop app in Ruby. To my amazement it worked! Took maybe 30 minutes with some tests. I have never touched the UI framework gtk3 before! Thus the title.
aidog··on Chris Seaton has died
I just opened my first issue two weeks ago in concurrent-ruby and he kindly offered me help. In the end I feel like I have wasted his time, because it was a different problem. I wish I expressed more gratitude. I'm grateful for everyone in the Ruby and OpenSource community
aidog··on I love my GPD Micro PC
I'm researching the Chuwi minibook now and amazon.co.jp sells an japanese quality tested version "FFF UMPC FFF-PCM2B". Also in Japan, Donki Hote is selling a similar device called NANOTE NEXT (7inch, 8GB RAM, 64GB SSD). Both are at a similar price point. I'd also like to namedrop panasonic let's note (bigger form factor)

Heavy and the slot does not even fit thick phones with covers any more. :| A strange product.
aidog··on Ask HN: Who is hiring? (June 2022)
Hi! Swiss abroad in Japan here. Sounds interesting. I hope you will open jobs to outside EU.
aidog··on Ask HN: Who is hiring? (June 2022)
I'm a Swiss Software Engineer fluent in German, but located in Japan. Is european time zone a hard requirement?
aidog··on Organice: An implementation of Org mode without the dependency of Emacs
Very interesting project. I've recently switched todolists and journals to text files on google drive. Editing on mobile is not an optimal experience, but it feels great not being locked in. Might be worth highlighting that it's all text files?

Good to see Swiss made software on here. Greetings from Japan!

aidog··on Japan's population falls by record 644,000 to 125.5M in 2021
First tour groups will be allowed in next month, so that's outdated
aidog··on PHP RFC: Deprecate ${} string interpolation
Big fan and longtime user of PHP here. Personal code has been providing business value with hardly any changes for 10 years. What has burned me recently is BoltCMS 3 using lots of symfony packages that don't work on PHP 8 anymore. There's a new version of the CMS, but it's a rewrite meaning lots of work to rewrite extensions and customization. Really grateful for the good open source CMS and PHP, but it's hard to sell customers an expensive update that won't give them any visible benefits. Those customers might decide to spend the money to build a new website with somebody else instead. PHP5 and 7 were quite backwards compatible, but sadly PHP8 seems to break a lot. New versions are supported for a much shorter time now.

So while I still like PHP and the good work they are doing, the maintenance cost has sadly steeply risen recently. SLAs are a necessity now.

aidog··on Stanislav Grof Interviews Dr. Albert Hofmann, Big Sur, California (1984)
Dr. Hofmann's Assistant from the bicycle ride came to my chemistry class in 2006 or so. (classmate's grandmother). Lovely old lady, it was surprising to hear her describe her drug experiences. I remember her warning us from trying to get it as it is not sold pure.
aidog··on Duck DNS – free dynamic DNS hosted on AWS
For some time I kept getting SMS phishing mails with duckdns.org urls here in Japan.
aidog··on Mozilla Foundation places two-page advocacy ad in The New York Times (2004)
I'm still bitter about that.
aidog··on State of the Web: Static Site Generators
I've made a simple php solution with markdown and blade templating. Newest post with two images fully loads in 1.88 seconds in Germany without a CDN running on 5$ linode in Tokyo. No build steps and I just write .md files in the git repo. Static Site Generators are nice, but using fewer parts is also an option.
aidog··on The Matrix Resurrections estimated to lose Warner Bros $100M
The meta aspect was a bit tedious at first, but I did enjoy how the story was set up. Neo trapped for years and years? Genius. NPH in the perfect role. It opened early in Japan, so I watched it last month, without trailers or anything. It's best to not expect anything, then it should be perfectly enjoyable.
aidog··on DaedalOS: Desktop Environment in the Browser
I like that this is useful, if you use an android system on a bigger screen and cannot open multiple browsers. This gives you multitasking in such a scenario.

Github was a bit hard to find: https://github.com/DustinBrett/daedalOS

aidog··on Exiled from the Metaverse before it even started: Facebook bans are for life
Nevermind FB. We miss you on twitter man.
aidog··on Ask HN: What are the best-designed things you've ever used?
Probably not, but maybe something out of the same factory. It can be bought on Amazon Japan.

This is their site: product.3ec.jp/neo/

The IC-BK20se from iClever does look very similar and might be available, but no guarantees. I decided to go with the japanese product because the marketing material seemed more polished. I had a look at the model with the trackpad but the keys were a little smaller. Bit too small.

aidog··on Ask HN: Did you find something to use your Raspberry Pi 400 for?
I love my raspberry pi 400. It's the ideal camping dev machine. My blog post about this is almost ready.
aidog··on Ask HN: What are the best-designed things you've ever used?
Sliding doors are very common in Japan. My home has them and they are great for saving space. They are sometimes hard to spot outside.
aidog··on Ask HN: What are the best-designed things you've ever used?
I picked up this nice bluetooth keyboard the 3E neo recently. It's a japanese brand. It fold's into pocket size but feels so sturdy and the keys are the perfect size. So satisfying
