aiProgMach··on Tell HN: Automatic fraud detection is making my life hell
Update 2: I received an email with very dismissal tone from amazon telling me the account will be closed. The funds are still there, I'm planning to apply for consumer complain against them, I'm willing to go to the end with this.
aiProgMach··on Tell HN: Automatic fraud detection is making my life hell
Update, Amazon basically said they won't accept to remove the hold on my account, saying:

> The information you supplied was reviewed by Amazon but we cannot remove the hold on your account at this time. For details, check for an email or text message from Amazon describing next steps. Please contact us for further concerns.

I provided my visa + passport + card pic + selfie + Screens of latest Gift card order (email and from the website), still they won't remove the hold and effectively stealing the money in the account. I can't believe this is being done in good faith, this is clear theft, because what else they need?

Yes, PayPal once locked me from reading their developer docs because I opened it from the wrong country. These guys never heard of remote working apparently?
aiProgMach··on Tell HN: Automatic fraud detection is making my life hell
I wish I have the same problem :)
aiProgMach··on Tell HN: Automatic fraud detection is making my life hell
1- The issue is rarely from the debit card it's always accepted, most of the times the payment will be cancelled from the service provider side

2- It's not technically non-Indian account, I'm opening accounts using valid Indian mobile number (tied to my visa and a real address), I always disclose that I'm not Indian when needed.

3- I was even trying to open Indian bank account to transfer money but no success so far (while possible in theory as I understood).

There are legitimate reasons for not wiring money if that was even an option, because you don't pay the hospital large amount ahead, and when it's time there's not enough time to wire the money.

Currently I'm at the 3rd attempt to unlock my account, let's see, hope you're right.

Laundering money using 100-200$ gift cards?
aiProgMach··on Tell HN: Automatic fraud detection is making my life hell
Nice will try that, thanks!
aiProgMach··on Tell HN: Automatic fraud detection is making my life hell
hmm no, my bank is fine, Amazon customer service told me they won't accept my card, that was the only option, but excuse me, how is 100-200$ gift card is money laundering?
aiProgMach··on Tell HN: Automatic fraud detection is making my life hell
My problem is different, the bank approve my payment after 3D secure check, the offender is the service provider, they cancel the order and issue a refund with a vague statement!
aiProgMach··on Tell HN: Automatic fraud detection is making my life hell
This might help in specific cases yes, but in case of websites that give physical services (e.g delivery of products) it won't help much
aiProgMach··on Is consciousness part of the fabric of the universe?
Sorry, but your position is consistent with the mainstream scientism: "I have no explanation for X based on materialistic point of view, so either it doesn't exist or let's reduce the phenomena to fit our taste".

My point was, even if we don't know what is the deep explanation of the phenomena, my own experience is infinitely more credible than any other "scientific" stories I might hear, because to deny my own experience opens the door to deny other things including logic and everything I know and my own senses.

Also note that free will does not in any way assume that our decisions or actions are without cause, after all from religious point of view, everything in existence is caused ultimately by God. Even one can argue, that saying that free will is not based on causes, actually means free will is impossible, because that mean our will is based on true randomness which doesn't sound "free" much.

aiProgMach··on Is consciousness part of the fabric of the universe?
No, it doesn't, in my very humble opinion. I know Sam harris (and Dennett) and I'm aware of his Ph.D in neuroscience, and when I put a quotation, I meant he's not really a topic expert on this or anything else based the depth of the content he provide as it makes him more like a Journalist with clear agenda, I wasn't talking about his academic credentials. I wonder why he's so hyped in certain circles though.
aiProgMach··on Is consciousness part of the fabric of the universe?
> I only trust some averaged, collective, rational, longer-term, reflective, investigative, independent, reviewed, challenged, criticized and doubted process to get closer to truth.

We're probably repeating ourselves, but this averaged process still has the same bottleneck which is your direct experience and your trust that your experience is true and contradictions are impossible indeed etc... You'll never run from this bottleneck no matter how you put this process.

I'm not debating wether we should trust the scientific process, I'm just saying to reach this stage there are lot of premises that should be established and thus the scientific process can't dispute them otherwise it will be killing it's own credibility at the same time.

Again, if I was delusional about my direct experience, then who can say then 1 + 1 really equal 2? No one can know.

aiProgMach··on Is consciousness part of the fabric of the universe?
Dennett... I don't think that guy can be called a real philosopher, but at least he's not just random "Journalist" like Sam harris is :)

Again, my direct experience of free will is much stronger than any of the half ass explanations these guys have to offer (and they're obviously much more flawed, you can clearly notice the ideological motives they have in relation to these topics).

My problem with this "explanation" (you feel that you have free will but you don't, it's just a story) is that it just pushes the issue one step further, I mean just think about it, who feels this exactly? They're assuming there is another "agent" within me that have the consciousness and it's being told stories and it accepts them, and this agent can understand that and it feel it can decide another choices, so it can decide? so it means it have some type of free will or the ability to understand different choices? even if in reality it can't execute them? (similar to paralyzed people?).

Anyway, if we want to open the can of worms of telling other people you're just delusional, then maybe the real world doesn't exist? and maybe logic is not real? and scientific method is not scientific? When I was much younger, I used to imagine that I live in a huge magical theater and that everything is being rendered for me, so maybe after all I'm the only real person in existence?

aiProgMach··on Is consciousness part of the fabric of the universe?
Still, even in your case if you slowly strip down the layers of your analysis, you will notice that it necessarily boils down to few things that you know directly and you can't build a proof for them because any other proof will be build on them being correct. Look, there are things that you know are correct and you can't make a proof for them (even the "I think therefore I am" is a circular reasoning, the real info is in "I" itself), and in your case you believe a lot of things about yourself and world you live in before you can really start to depend on the higher order conclusions that allow you to trust your friend or your doctors.
aiProgMach··on Is consciousness part of the fabric of the universe?
What you're saying does not contradict what I'm saying. The thing you're describing works on a much higher level than what I was describing, for example in this case the doctor needs to fulfill at least the following requirements (from his own point of view):

1- He's independent agent who's watching and describing another independent agent in a real objective world

2- He acknowledge that there is cause/effect in principal (that's why they can deduce that there are flaws in the patient mind just based on external behaviour)

3- The doctor is trusting that he's not himself hallucinating, and that he's indeed see'ing real things and he's not just a programmed robot doing some random job.

and so on.

--

As you can see I was talking about very basic level, it's the level that allow you to build another more complex level of information, and which any other information is necessarily less reliable than it. Because trusting that I'm independent agent who exists in an objective world along another independent agents is a necessary Premise to accept any external information provided by those other agents, and any information provided by those agents that contradicts this basic experience it also destroys any reliability in the objectivity and correctness of their existence for me and any input provided by them. Hence, any "scientific" paper that contradicts my direct experience about myself (e.g Free will) is necessarily less reliable than said experience no matter what is the impact factor of the journal.

aiProgMach··on Is consciousness part of the fabric of the universe?
Thank you. It's really mind boggling how many people miss _this_ especially in scientism echo chambers. My knowledge about myself (consciousness, free will...), is infinitely more reliable than any of "Scientific" input no matter what is the "impact factor" of the publishing medium, so really no amount of "science" can be enough to disprove those very basic principles that everything else is built upon them.
aiProgMach··on Rafael’s Iron Dome
It's not really complex or anything, what make this issue looks "hyper complex" is that the aggressor in this case is fully supported by the "Western" bloc with it's powerful media and it's hard and soft power, but morally it's a simple issue. When a stealer steal your home and kill your parents and children this makes them criminal for each moment they live in that house and for each breathe they take from the air of your home.

The issue is really simple, just watch this video of Jacob [1] (American zionist settler) telling the real owner of the house "If I didn't steal it someone else will", these people are committing their crimes in full awareness and without a shred of empathy or morality or anything, really.

aiProgMach··on Twitter restricted in Turkey in aftermath of earthquake
> Also, don't fall to the expressions like, "Turkish here", "German there". These does not make anyone expert nor without bias.

Exactly! I'm from another global south country. Usually when someone on these sites say "${their_country} here" I prepare myself for the worst takes because I know this happens in my country, usually it's some liberal who read/work in western leaning media and repeat what they hear. It's an echo chamber so huge that you can't touch it's walls so it's hard to know you actually live in an echo chamber.

aiProgMach··on Show HN: I'm a doctor and made a responsive breathing app for stress and anxiety
Nice job! My sister has chronic obstructive pulmonary disease and always on Oxygen concentrator, do you think this app _at this stage of development_ can help her? or it's strictly only for wellness purposes?
aiProgMach··on Solar panels reduced my electric bill in 2022
It's not hard. There is type of inverters that called "Hybrid inverter", I have one that can keep power off-grid or on-grid or even on-grid in import mode only (so only import any needed power without exporting...), and it can work off-grid even without battery (from solar) but that is not recommended unless you know that your load is much smaller than the solar output, even small lead-acid battery can mitigate this issue. The way the inverter work is that when the grid goes off it will automatically switch the power export off and keep the load running from solar and/or battery in isolated mode.
aiProgMach··on Mohammed bin Salman: Saudi leader given US immunity over Khashoggi killing
What's interesting in this whole Khashoggi case is not the US response or lack of response. Any other crime committed by the US and KSA will make Khashoggi murder a joke in comparison. What irritates me is that KSA committed and still commit genocide in Yemen since at least 2015 (this is only one place), people are being starved, and no one feel the "ethical burden" to take any action or ask their "free world" leader to take any action or stop helping and leading that war. Yet the sensitive liberals are mad because of Mr. Khashoggi murder, they have the nerve the mention the "ethics" even when they're trying to invoke the geo-political argument (Yes MBS is bad but not as Bad as X while X changes every few years, today it's Putin). The hard and brutal truth is that if you ever voted in US for Trump or Obama or Biden or Bush Or almost any President in the past 50 years, you have more ethical burden than simply worrying about the lack of response against MBS.
aiProgMach··on Mohammed bin Salman: Saudi leader given US immunity over Khashoggi killing
I think your reply is the joke, the Poster comment is making good point, Saddam Hussein & Gadaffi were removed by US war machine. It's just a war that suits the US.
aiProgMach··on A study of lights at night suggests dictators lie about economic growth
I don't underestimate the importance of having the population (or most of it) has a saying in how their everyday life go (to some extent, e.g I don't think the moral laws can be determined by votes even if all humans voted on them). However, most of the benefits that usually attributed to democracy should be attributed to wealth, colonialism, and transparency/ no internal corruption (and no, democracy might help in reducing corruption and providing more transparency but it's not strictly required). When you look into (once) successful countries such as France, UK.. You can see wealthy and strong nation that win wars and keep overcoming obstacles, and you attribute that to the "democracy" and "liberal values" or simply you can ignore those liberal values and remember that "correlation doesn't imply causation" and then you can better explain things with colonialism and mass destruction of people, and nature to extract value, then it doesn't matter much how efficient you are. The British empire didn't conquer the 1840 famine by being a "democracy", it simply stole Irish people food making the crisis worse for them. Also when you look closely most of the democracies aren't that distributed, in every nation there are power structures that determine what the collective nation do, do you think really that all US people actually took the decision to destroy Vietnam? or fight Communism at any expense? or conquer and destroy Iraq? I don't think the American people are all that evil, the decision is cooked and it's enforced later via "democratic" channels.
aiProgMach··on Iran’s Internet Shutdown Hides a Deadly Crackdown
Actually your wife is wrong. The American media is controlled but in smart and efficient way, the average Iranian knows this well unless they're the Pro America Iranian who only represents small percentage of the Iranians (and they are seen as traitors even from many opposition parties). The funny thing, the difference between the major American media regarding Iran, is that some want to starve the people until they can make a coup, the other opinion is that Iran should be nuked tomorrow. And People has the nerve to call this "freedom of speech"

Carpet bombing? Burning cities with napalm? Using depleted uranium? Burning children with Phosphorus? Planting mines for civilians? aiProgMach··on Toyota unveils 8.7 kWh battery for residential applications
I checked the manual and wasn't able to find this warning, but you might be correct. Thanks for heads up I didn't think of this scenario!
aiProgMach··on Toyota unveils 8.7 kWh battery for residential applications
I have 1540W and it's enough to cover more than 16hrs of power outages (light fridge, fans etc...), but I'm planning to expand as things are going wild in the near future probably. I'm afraid at the current rate of wars and energy insecurity even some rich countries will face the issues we're facing and we will be even worse!
aiProgMach··on Toyota unveils 8.7 kWh battery for residential applications
You're right, I think my situation is similar to yours. My solar array is not so big (for now at least) so I have lot of power in the noon but less in other times, so it will be very helpful to have a lithium pack that absorb all that power quickly and then feed it to the lazy lead pack over the next few hours.
