ahwvd37js··on You Can Run
In the long tradition of commenting on HN without reading the source, I was about to write up everything I've learned about running over the years...shoes, routes, stretches, rest days, IT band therapy, ...
ahwvd37js··on Ask HN: Advice that changed your life?
I’m in my 30s and I could fill up hundreds of pages with all the crappy advice I’ve been given over my life by well-meaning people. Yes, some advice is helpful, and it is helpful to know when you’re stuck and need some new ideas, but I think in most cases advice is overrated. Try things out yourself, make your own mistakes, figure out what works for you, and what doesn’t. You will learn more from the struggle, and the lessons will be cemented much deeper. Don’t be afraid to fail.
ahwvd37js··on An astronomer thinks alien tech could be on the ocean floor. Not everyone agrees
Just reading the headline, I said to myself “I bet it’s Avi Loeb.”
ahwvd37js··on What would a “good” WebMD look like?
I gave up on WebMD and its ilk years ago. You get better information by just searching for med literature on google scholar, and you can read anything with sci-hub. Or ask a doctor friend to download a subject page from UpToDate.
ahwvd37js··on Meld for Macs
Kaleidoscope is def (pun intended) the prettiest diff'ing tool, but it is very sluggish on 1000+ line files. In those cases I use CompareMerge.
ahwvd37js··on Nature has enormous emotional and cognitive benefits on people
What’s the mechanism of action?
ahwvd37js··on We think this cool study we found is flawed. Help us reproduce it
From the original paper [1].

> Paradoxically, participants with a scientific background may perform worse at producing random sequences, thanks to a common belief among them that the occurrence of any string is as statistically likely as any other (a bias deriving from their knowledge of classical probability theory), which further justifies controlling for Field of education, simplified as humanities v. science.

ahwvd37js··on U.S. surgeons transplant pig heart into human patient
Does it taste like bacon?
ahwvd37js··on The truth about turbinates (and sinusitis)
I had turbinate reduction and deviated septum repair surgery and it changed my life for the better. I sleep better, wake up more refreshed, and have more energy during the day.
ahwvd37js··on Prefer the British Style of Quotation Mark Punctuation over the American
It high school I got yelled at when I put the period before the final quote mark. In college I got yelled at when I did the opposite. Both seem completely arbitrary.
ahwvd37js··on Adult Obesity Facts
This series of articles proposes that environmental contaminants are the only possible cause of obesity that fits with all the available data. Can someone with a biology/medical background weigh in on whether this is legit? https://slimemoldtimemold.com/author/slimemoldtimemold/
ahwvd37js··on When scientific orthodoxy resembles religious dogma
I did my PhD in astrophysics, and I can tell you that the author's name has become synonymous with, shall we say, fringe ideas. I won't say crack pot because he is a legit tenured astronomer at Harvard, but I have seen his papers roundly critiqued on the merits at too many journal clubs to count. (Eg, life could have evolved in interstellar space https://arxiv.org/abs/1312.0613 ) Its a bit outrageous to claim he's Galileo and the rest of the community is the Church when he is so clearly using his tenure as a defense against the weakness, and untestability, of his ideas.
ahwvd37js··on Tesla says “Full Self-Driving” software doesn't make cars autonomous
This letter is being massively overhyped. The fact that the self driving package requires a lot of driver supervision is pretty obvious to anyone who actually drives a Tesla.
ahwvd37js··on In Pictures: How much plastic are you eating?
Visa cards tend to be the tastiest, followed by American Express. Discover comes in a number of flavors, but they are all a bit spicy for my taste. Occasionally I’ll grate one over my lego sushi for a bit of a kick, otherwise I stick with the classics. And you can’t beat Julia Child’s original recipe for Beef Bourguignon with Braised Debit Card.
