ahoy··on The Citroen Ami – tiny electric car with no boot, 28mph top speed, 46 mile range
You'd be surprised what you can get on a bicycle with just a rear rack and a bag. It does require a bit more planning ahead, which I'll admit can be annoying.
ahoy··on Twitter launches blue check for $7.99 monthly fee
That's what gets me about this. Launching a subscription system makes sense, but discontinuing the verification system and repurposing it as a subscription system makes no sense.
ahoy··on Stripe laying off around 14% of workforce
Wage labor in capitalism is by its very nature adversarial, I'd say.
ahoy··on The first minute of every phone call is torture now
Same. I've had an s8 and and s20, neither have this ads issue described.
ahoy··on New motorcycle lighting design could save lives
Most road safety problems boil down to too many cars. The US & Canada aren't interested in changing that though. In the US we have 40k road deaths/year baked into the culture.

It's really jarring, as someone who doesn't own a car.

ahoy··on The Pound's Warning for Europe
This magazine is founded by a former NYPost Op-Ed editor & Wall Street Journal columnist. It's not surprising to me that they run, essentially, conservative opinion pieces dressed up as Meaningful Analysis.
ahoy··on Should traffic lights be abolished? (2021)
Zero consideration for pedestrians, typical of US traffic engineering. Sucks here.
ahoy··on IRS will look into setting up a free e-filing system
"will look into" is code for will not do.
ahoy··on Ask HN: Why don't we have 3 day weekends yet?
The worker is alienated from (most of) the product of their labor. Until that changes, "productivity" doesn't benefit them, only their employers. Why should we want more of that?
ahoy··on [dead]
A quick review of this blog's posts does not make me think this is an author to be taken very seriously.
ahoy··on We disabled Google AMP at Tribune Publishing
When I joined Talking Points Memo, AMP was the new "hot" thing. I fought hard to stop us from jumping on that train and I'm glad I did.
ahoy··on Ask HN: How to find a small town to relocate for remote work?
It's not illegal, therefore it's not a bad thing. And since it's not a bad thing, its not illegal.

did i get that right

ahoy··on U.S. annual inflation rate drops to 8.5%
Hah, speak for yourself! I want 20x as many bikes out there.
ahoy··on U.S. annual inflation rate drops to 8.5%
Do you take an uber/taxi/etc? I always assumed that you'd need to buy in bulk quantities to make costco worth it here, which would require a car
ahoy··on New Home Prices Are Starting to Drop
It's jarring to see "record high housing starts" and "dropping home prices" presented as bad news.

Fascinating piece, thanks for sharing.

ahoy··on Marc Andreessen says he’s for new housing, but records tell a different story
This is the kind of comment you write when your only experience with NYC is as a tourist in the densest parts of Manhattan.
ahoy··on Marc Andreessen says he’s for new housing, but records tell a different story
Cycling in nyc has changed drastically in the last decade. It's almost good now!

It's the cars for me. I hate driving. I hate how everyone having a car makes it necessary to drive everywhere. Very few cities in the us let you get away without owning a car.

NYC isn't perfect, its just better than everywhere else ive lived.

ahoy··on In microtransit, passengers order a shuttle van instead of having to take a bus
Public bus transit and private car transit are inherently in conflict. You basically can't run them on the same streets and expect the bus to not suck.

You could, of course, run the bus in a dedicated, separate right-of-way to solve that problem. But like you said, just build rail at that point

ahoy··on California Sends Democrats and the Nation a Message on Crime
To be fair, that's largely the democratic plan too. See NYC/LA/etc. D's and R's alike hate the homeless.
ahoy··on California Sends Democrats and the Nation a Message on Crime
So in this land of topsy turvy logic, high crime stats is a good thing, because that means they're being reported?
ahoy··on California Sends Democrats and the Nation a Message on Crime
This SF district attorney recall thing is a really good example of the media's power to manufacture a story. Even if you accept the premise that crime stats rise or fall in response to DA policies, those stats mostly fell during Boudin's tenure.

But if you show the video of someone robbing a convenience store (in oakland! another city entirely!) enough times on loop, you can convince enough voters that Something Must Be Done.

ahoy··on A city fights back against heavyweight cars
Trains literally do not encourage sprawl. They encourage dense walkable towns built around train stations.
ahoy··on Homes in 97% of U.S. cities are overvalued, Moody's says
If you think 40k/yr is buy-a-house money you've never lived off 40k/yr.
ahoy··on Homes in 97% of U.S. cities are overvalued, Moody's says
I'm not really sure how. I can count on 1 hand the number of under-40 homeowners I know.
ahoy··on Homes in 97% of U.S. cities are overvalued, Moody's says
Any landlord who finds themselves so burdened by missed rent payments ought to just sell their properties. The market's never been better. They can use the windfall to start a real business instead.
ahoy··on Kraken shuts down global headquarters because ‘San Francisco is not safe’
It does seem that way. Violent crime in us cities is at historic lows, despite a small uptick in the past year or two. You have to assume anyone making a fuss over it is doing it for political reasons.
ahoy··on Filing taxes could be free & simple. H&R Block & Intuit lobby against it (2017)
My takeaway is a bit different:

- You can buy the tax policy you want for surprisingly little money

- The lawmakers who create tax policy are happy with the average american being annoyed at the IRS all the time.

ahoy··on Folding bicycle small enough to fit in hand luggage
Folding bikes are really cool but the small wheels mean you really feel any unevenness it the road.
ahoy··on Goldilocks Zone Finder – Find your ideal climate
Asheville is also one of most expensive cities to rent/buy in NC
