Agreed. I think it's important to remember the lack of real "mass deportations now" when you see two things:

1) low Trump approval rating. Likely due to lack of following through on these promises (rather than disapproval of the promises themselves)

2) protests against deportations. Why do dems simultaneously crow about their superior deportation numbers while condemning current efforts as heavy handed and cruel?

ahmeneeroe-v2··on CBP is monitoring US drivers and detaining those with suspicious travel patterns
Well-stated. Our prior solutions to internal enforcement of previous Border misses no longer work given that the scale of border "misses" exploded after deliberate non-enforcement.* Now larger-scale internal enforcement is needed. Sucks for all of us.

*Worse than non-enforcement, the feds actively blocked/destroyed Texas border protections.

you think it's reasonable to have 24/7 surveillance and then case support to get a hedged trimmed?
ahmeneeroe-v2··on CBP is monitoring US drivers and detaining those with suspicious travel patterns
Very similar feeling to watching the liberal/progressive party fangirl the FBI and the intel community

edit: in reality the times have changed and so has the country and the parties. All of these pre-2008 stereotypes are stupid and not useful anymore.

>the fact i was never stopped makes me even more terrified of a panopticon. Is their surveillance that bad -- or that good?

"I'm terrified that this panopticon so bad that it doesn't see anything"

This is stupid. Unless you happen to be the one that crashes it won't be a factor at all.

Apple's heavy handed vision works for me in the phone format. I've spent my years messing with android ROMs and don't want to go back.

I would love plug-in display type functionality for my phone, but not at the expense of leaving the walled garden.

Don't presume too much about the US Navy's fleet decisions. Using that same logic you could presume that smaller, aged and poorly maintained fleets are advantageous for naval supremacy since that appears to be the choice of the US Navy for a couple generations now.

Or you could presume that the complete inability to build a merchant marine fleet was also a strategic advantage!

Bad reading comprehension.

Endless wars pre-date capitalism. Western defense companies are hardly capitalistic. They are as "planned economy" as it gets. China is wildly capitalistic in many aspects.

Maybe Chinese companies don't lobby for war because they are so bad at war that they can't see a route to profitability?

We have had mass surveillance for a generation now. It would be great if they used it for mass deportations.

Mine fail all the time. Cheap Amazon Basics, expensive Phillips.

Do they fail more than incandescents? idk maybe not, but they fail much more often than their advertising would suggest.

The US Navy consistently builds reactors on-time and in-budget

I recently sold my 1TB M1 Cellular iPad at a loss and picked up a 2019 Intel MacBook Pro for exactly the same reason.

I don't even need GNU-freedom, regular MacOS is fine. I just can't live with a iPadOS anymore.

edit: you can pry locked down iOS from my cold dead hands. Love it exactly because it's a walled garden.

I'm with 4chan on this one. The actual problem is people like you.

revisionist in the extreme. Not reading the rest of your comment after this one.

The only reason we have the US is that we rejected this notion.
ahmeneeroe-v2··on Hemp ban hidden inside government shutdown bill
The insane thing about the US is that 350M people are being represented. The government needs to represent a minority of people in order to become functional again.

That said I bet the Senate exists in 500 years.

ahmeneeroe-v2··on Britain's railway privatization was an abject failure
Very fair question. Let's also consider the inverse. Are there any modern government run success stories in Britain?

>You can't just go and kill other people on the high seas without due process

You actually can. It's actually the standard way.

The rest of what you say is nonsense. The world pretended it was true in the post-WWII liberal world order, but it wasn't true then or now.

The principle is that of self-defense. Drugs have killed more Americans in recent years than did all of our 20th century military actions. We are right to use military force (and not judicial force) to meet this threat.

"What if they did that to us?"

We have a navy precisely because people have tried to do this to us and we decided we'd rather own the water.
