ahbyb··on Blizzard Postpones World of Warcraft 15th Anniversary Event in Taiwan
I value WoW more than I value human rights.
ahbyb··on 63 Cores Blocked by Seven Instructions
Ah, but that's something you do on purpose. What I meant is that it's not a Meltdown-like problem.
ahbyb··on Saudi Aramco Is the WeWork of Energy with Pulled IPO
I agree with you and, at the same time, I don't know what we'll do when everything gets automated.
ahbyb··on Saudi Aramco Is the WeWork of Energy with Pulled IPO
Societies that have failed despite having lots of resources because of cultural deficiencies or lack of intelligence, well, that could be applied to the whole of Africa. But that's really opening a bad can of worms ;-)
ahbyb··on 63 Cores Blocked by Seven Instructions
It's an invalid instruction, so a compiler wouldn't (shouldn't) ever generate it.
ahbyb··on Tina is not a CMS
"WP Super Cache" by the creators of WordPress can make any WordPress website as fast as a static website. When properly configured, it will be nginx serving html files.
ahbyb··on Pop_OS 19.10
Let's say that it looks more like the Apple website, when I expect it to look like the Void Linux website.
ahbyb··on Pop_OS 19.10
>We’re building an OS for the software developer, maker, and computer science professional who uses their computer as a tool to discover and create.

Then have a simpler website... This website doesn't look like it's trying to appeal to a computer scientist.

ahbyb··on We (Novel)
I've only skimmed through the "Plot" section because I might read this in the future and I don't want to be spoiled, but doesn't this sound a lot like 1984?
ahbyb··on 2020 OS Migration
I don't find it to be "nearly unreadable" myself, but yes it's difficult. I think it depends mostly on the quality of your monitor, and on how it is calibrated.
ahbyb··on 2020 OS Migration
This site would benefit from higher contrast and thicker fonts.
ahbyb··on International Repair Day
I've looked at the list and all the devices there are thick (like, 2009-level thick) and have huge bezels.
ahbyb··on International Repair Day
>On the contrary, devices can be made thin and sleek while being repairable.

I'll believe it when I see it. Thus far all easily repairable mobile phones I've seen were ugly and bulky compared to normal phones.

ahbyb··on International Repair Day
Heh. How do I lobby to oppose this? I don't want bulkier, thicker and uglier devices just so I can open them, because I have no interest in doing so. And I definitely don't want this written into law...
ahbyb··on California fault capable of producing a magnitude 8 earthquake has begun moving
Ah geez. I was assuming you wanted the alerts to be sent to your mobile while you were away from home.
ahbyb··on California fault capable of producing a magnitude 8 earthquake has begun moving
Email doesn't work without phone data
ahbyb··on California fault capable of producing a magnitude 8 earthquake has begun moving
How would something like this work without connectivity?
ahbyb··on Mozilla’s 18-month effort to market without Facebook
Firefox on mobile still hasn't implemented something as basic as enlarged touch targets for buttons in webpages. Pressing the [-] button that is next to each comment of this site using Firefox is a nightmare compared to any other webkit browser.
ahbyb··on Mozilla’s 18-month effort to market without Facebook
There's the middle ground of using Firefox and wishing the Mozilla Corporation wasn't full of hypocrites.
ahbyb··on Samsung: Anyone's thumbprint can unlock Galaxy S10 phone
A fingerprint reader can also be operated while the victim is asleep, unconscious, and even after you sever the thumb off (remote attack!!). Does that mean a fingerprint reader cannot be ever be called secure?
ahbyb··on AMD Lists Threadripper 3000 CPU with 32 Cores, Possible New Socket
That's the trick: they can't make single cores faster so they just throw more cores at the problem and call it a day. Obviously that doesn't work but who cares? It looks good in benchmarks.
ahbyb··on Samsung: Anyone's thumbprint can unlock Galaxy S10 phone
Ah, what I understood from tfa is that you could take any mobile phone with a properly registered fingerprint (ie without having used a screen protector) and then unlock it by placing a screen protector between the fingerprint reader and any fingerprint.
ahbyb··on Samsung: Anyone's thumbprint can unlock Galaxy S10 phone
Can someone explain to me how something like this is technically possible? And by "explain" I don't mean "ELI5", be all the technical you want. How can you design a fingerprint reader that lets anybody in like this?
ahbyb··on Gitlab: don't discuss politics at work
Nobody is saying "don't get involved in politics", just "don't bring it to work".
ahbyb··on PhD candidate made a skirt out of rejection letters
>what if a man made a fedora out of the profile pictures of all the women that had rejected him on tinder?

He'd break his neck.

ahbyb··on Raising severity to serious for some Python 2 leaf packages with no Python 3
RHEL's fork of Python 2 has a roadmap with clear dates of support. It won't "break at any time".
ahbyb··on Raising severity to serious for some Python 2 leaf packages with no Python 3
Debian could just take RHEL's fork of Python 2. Why don't they do that?
ahbyb··on Raising severity to serious for some Python 2 leaf packages with no Python 3
The last thing I expected to see in 'lists.debian.org' was emojis.
ahbyb··on How to pack a Norwegian sandwich, the world’s most boring lunch
Yes, that's the reason. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ultra-high-temperature_process...
ahbyb··on Catalan separatist leaders given lengthy prison sentences
Taking into account max sentence for sedition is 15 years and they got 12 years for sedition + misuse of public money and they'll probably only spend half of that time in prison... seems like 'lengthy' is not the correct word.
