agsqwe··on Harvest hikes bills by 1500% after purchased by Bending Spoons
We've been paying ~100 a month for the last 13 years and got an email earlier this month:

"On your next renewal date, August 31, 2026, your account will be transitioned to a Harvest Enterprise plan with Unlimited usage billing.

You will be automatically billed $2,199.50 for your new monthly plan.

You can always downgrade to Flex usage billing, which would have an estimated price of $416.05 and would adapt to your monthly usage.".

Needless to say, after 2 days with Codex the account has been closed.

agsqwe··on ClickHouse acquires Langfuse
We like Langfuse for observability via OpenTelemetry. Prompt management is too basic for our needs.
agsqwe··on Ask HN: What tech purchase did you regret even though reviews were great?
I've had the same issues until I got top of the line Roborock. It never loses map and almost never gets stuck, washes itself with water and drain connection. I'd rather not buy a Chinese brand but here we are...

Then countries with even more greedy elites would have even lower rates, which is not the case.

A few examples of fertility rates (higher is better, 2023 data):

  Sweden: 1.45
  US: 1.62
  Kenya: 3.21

Everything is relative. I'm an immigrant from a post-USSR country and the US is still orders of magnitude more democratic and free

agsqwe··on The Ozempocalypse Is Nigh
It can be relatively safe with proper handling. There are independent laboratories you can send this "product" to for analysis. Often people organize group buys with some random samples tested.

This is very similar to my experience as a software development agency to enterprise customers. Out of big product ideas.

agsqwe··on Diabetes drug Mounjaro was available at $25/month, then increased to $1k/month
I think what's meant here it's that the manufacturer chose to target specific patient groups (T2D) and commercial insurances to get the highest profit per dose. About 40% of adults in the US are obese, they could have made the drug available at much lower cost and get their profits from economies of scale. Instead, the production is low and the focus is narrow.
agsqwe··on No surprises here – On the absence of information in today’s media
That's an interesting point. What can we do as a society to fix this?
agsqwe··on Ask HN: What business software app do you hate the most? Why?
Jira. So slow these days.
agsqwe··on Ask HN: What projects are you working on now?

agsqwe··on Engineers without borders, silos, and vendor walls
A different perspective from a dev shop owner.

Our clients do outsource custom development primarily due to cost-saving reasons. Being non-tech companies it is very difficult to justify high IT project costs. Competing for qualified talent is no fun as well which leaves them with internal IT whose primary job is to keep existing things running and that's it.

For them, it is a choice of:

A) Outsource development of the 3 projects and actually have the 3 projects completed and bring business value

B) Hire 3 teams of engineers, managers, UX, whatever, and keep them salaried

C) Do not have the 3 projects at all

The budget often allows for initial development only, making option B non-viable.
