agmcleod··on ‘The Wire’ – Game Day
Yeah it's my favourite for sure. I guess depending on how game of thrones ends, it may be a high contender. Breaking bad was amazing too, but the wire just felt so real.
agmcleod··on [dead]
Censoring is quite a bit different from being jailed or fined.
agmcleod··on Redesigning Apple Music after Being Rejected
> - Extremely ungraceful handling of spotty cell coverage. Playback will abruptly stop to buffer, but the UI gives absolutely no feedback. The play/pause button just behaves as if I told it to stop, and is unresponsive to my input. This is especially terrible while driving, where playback can stop for other reasons (Like a bluetooth disconnect).

This seems to happen to me, even though I don't stream any music.

agmcleod··on Build Yourself a Redux
I found the getting started with redux to be interesting once I already knew it. But when I was a newbie, I just found it to be confusing.
agmcleod··on Introducing Surface Laptop
They mentioned in the announcement that it supports the Pen. So yes it's touch.
agmcleod··on Introducing Surface Laptop
> Dead on Arrival for our company.

It's not for professionals, it's for students.

agmcleod··on Losing My Patience with Google+
I enjoyed the communities it had for a while. Some cool developer chats I was able to read, though after a bit I kinda stopped checking in.
agmcleod··on Apple releases iOS 10.3
> It stills feels wrong on a gut level, and semver folks might not be happy with it, but it seems to make some real sense.

Wouldn't this be valid semver if the APIs or general functionality hasn't changed? Or isn't expected to?

agmcleod··on Next.js 2.0
Speeding up development cycle is not the only goal. Its not a good thing when it causes the user experience of the application to be worse. I think SPAs have come a long way in this regard, but it was definitely quite rocky for a while.
agmcleod··on Next.js 2.0
I think you're over simplifying the gradle solution though. I know when I did java in school, it was not easy. There was a fair bit of configuration. Getting glassfish or tomcat to work with eclipse was a challenge. Gradle has definitely helped this a lot, but you still need to know how to configure the gradle script if you need to change something.

You're right in that JS tools do need to get stronger, and over even the last 2-3 years they have. I haven't had mine "constantly breaking", generally once you build a new application and set it up with your standard dependencies. Like an ORM, what ever server middleware, test frameworks, utility libraries, etc. It tends to be pretty stable, unless you try to upgrade something years down the road.

agmcleod··on iPad 9.7‑inch
I'm a dev and I enjoy it. Though it kinda sucks when I can't connect to an external monitor at home, have yet to buy any dongles for that. I'm kinda curious who finds themselves needing more memory, and for what purpose. No doubt more can be helpful, but having 16 hasn't really ever felt slow to me. Even when running multiple virtual machines.
agmcleod··on Netflix Replacing Star Ratings With Thumbs Ups and Thumbs Down
What other services do you use? I paid for prime, so i've watched some stuff on prime video, but there's really not much on there. Netflix is pretty much my only option for most TV shows. Worth noting I'm in Canada.
agmcleod··on Announcing Rust 1.16
I haven't seen much on it. Doesn't mean solutions don't exist, but I regularly read updates on reddit and what people are working on, and I haven't seen much there. I feel like Swift is more likely to fill that role by coming to android.
agmcleod··on Why Women Don’t Apply for Jobs Unless They’re 100% Qualified (2014)
Yep, this is a good mentality to have. I applied to a job after graduating from college that asked for 2-5+ years of experience. I was able to cite some project experience from school and from a 4 month co-op. Was enough to get an interview, and I took it from there to get a job offer.
agmcleod··on Apple’s Devices Lose Luster in American Classrooms
If I can ask you, what do you find the benefit is of teaching this as a standard curriculum? It makes sense to me for people wanting to get into development or IT. But not everyone is going into tech, and may not benefit from it. Most non tech people I know only use a computer at work, and get by. Otherwise they use phones, tablets, etc. I agree that the iPad is awful for the kind of things you're teaching, but for standard school work, I feel like it or the chromebook (due to price and a keyboard) are fairly good choices.

Thanks!

agmcleod··on Apple’s Devices Lose Luster in American Classrooms
I'm not sure if that's something people should have to learn though. For example, not everyone knows how the engine of a car works, and that's okay. For using computers, I feel like getting comfortable with a phone or tablet is useful at a younger age, and maybe get introduced to a mac or windows machine when they're a bit older, provided those are still main stream by the time they get there. Not everyone needs to be a developer. Though maybe I'm wrong with the way automation is going :)
agmcleod··on What I Heard from Trump Supporters
Ah sorry, your point went over my head then clearly :). Yep, I prefer to try and dig into someones argument.
agmcleod··on What I Heard from Trump Supporters
I get that argument, but I see people of different minorities who just simply don't want to work with them, because the trump supporters put the grossness and sexism aside. They want to fix the voter surpression, and better encourage people who support the side of equality to come out and vote, than convince the people who supported trump.
agmcleod··on What I Heard from Trump Supporters
You are generalizing a number of points that he never spoke about though. I think those things about Islam are terrible, and would never defend it. Nor do I defend the stupidity that is christianity. But I also recognize people of the same religion have different levels of morality. Likewise I accept that women and men are different genetically, but that we should treat them equally.

That said, I think silicon valley is definitely not a morally superior place. Given what came out this weekend about Uber. They're not the first tech company to have diversity and problems with how they treat women.

agmcleod··on The Making Of “Homer At The Bat,” The Episode That Conquered Prime Time (2012)
Roger clemens clucking like a chicken always gets me. I believe he made the actual sounds for that too.
agmcleod··on Rust's 2017 Roadmap
Thanks for letting me know :)
agmcleod··on Apple proposes new web 3D graphics API
That doesn't mean their isn't good reason. I guess they believe they can build a better product by having control over the graphics pipeline. Obviously I cannot say for sure what they think in that regard, but neither can you.
agmcleod··on Rust's 2017 Roadmap
Ive found Atom to be better in terms of having the lint as you go. RustyCode is pretty good though otherwise :). I'm interested to see where the debugging goes with it as well.
agmcleod··on Rust creator Graydon Hoare is now at Apple working on Swift
Mhmm. Really with all those things, i'd give it a serious try for my game development side projects. Currently using html5 for some, libgdx (java) for others.
agmcleod··on Sony and LG stop making 3D TV sets
> VR headsets. The technology has been working for years now and there's still no killer app beyond 3D shooters.

I disagree. It's niche, but it makes 3d movies feel like a joke. Most technology pieces have been about the sum of their parts anyways, not a single killer app. Certain things stand out like Zelda or Mario for nintendo, but Sony & Microsoft have done well by having a number of good games to buy. While VR is a set of shorter experiences, more and more keep coming up. A number outside of the shooter space.

agmcleod··on Former Apple engineer: Tim Cook made Apple a 'boring operations company'
Yeah pretty much since android studio replaced eclipse, things got better on the android side. Though I still find android a pain from an ecosystem perspective.

Haven't done a lot of straight up native apps, but I use the tools for react native & cordova stuff.

agmcleod··on Stealing passwords from McDonald's users
It's something i've steered away from, or I would encrypt the id before saving it in the session. I don't exactly recall where I picked it up, but i know i've seen it in example tutorials in books with Rails apps.
agmcleod··on From OS X to Ubuntu
I think linux is nice and all. But i've had my share of issues with Ubuntu & video card drivers over the years. I've tried to run dual boot on my PC at home, and haven't had much luck keeping it stable. I think the best experience I had was running Ubuntu back around 2008, 2009, on my dell inspiron laptop. Wireless was a challenge, but otherwise it ran great.

On the weekend I picked up a laptop I ordered during boxing day sales. An asus rog with a gtx 1070 in it. More for going to gaming events and that, but I put linux mint on the second hard drive so I can mess around from time to time. Haven't tested the web cam, but most things seem to work fine. I guess time will tell if it's something I want to move to (still use a mac at work)

agmcleod··on Newest MacBook Pro is the first MacBook not recommended by Consumer Reports
Most large product companies are going to be met with some people not liking the choices, or some backlash. You make it sound like all their products receive 2/10 across the board or something, when that's simply not true. One can't please everybody, but most of the phones have been well received. I think the worst issue was the iPhone 4 models having some cell reception problems ("You're holding it wrong"). Most of the products they put out are generally liked by reviewers, with usually fair criticism as well.

That said, I think the recent years of there just being more earlier on bugs is worrying. I hope apple ups their quality control in the coming year.

agmcleod··on Newest MacBook Pro is the first MacBook not recommended by Consumer Reports
Nope, 15" one has Radeon graphics.
