aga98mtl··on Germany to admit 400k skilled immigrants annually
> With that out of the way, I’m puzzled by the premise of the article. How do countries become unable to satisfy local demand through local supply?

The baby-boomer* generation is much bigger than other generation. Their retirement is not met with the same amount of young worker coming into the job market. Businesses need to produce just as much if not more as before. So basically we need to import the kids we did not have 20 to 30 years ago to maintain the same amount of workers. The same thing is happening in many developed countries.

* Germany's baby-boomers are younger than the one in the USA or Canada

aga98mtl··on Lessons from Seoul's controversial privatized subway line
I'm confused by the article. The main problem is that the line is too popular because the government under estimated ridership? How does this have anything to do with it being privatized?

When they tried raising prices the city fought them? Should you not raise pricing when you have more customer than capacity?

aga98mtl··on Bitcoin Failed in El Salvador. The President Says the Answer Is More Bitcoin
> Eg. Mentioning that it's nuts to mine BTC while they could have used the geothermal energy to lower electricity costs in the country ( since they import 20%), makes more economic sense for it's citizens.

I think the point is that crypto mining finances the building of power generation in areas where it was not profitable to do so due to lack of electricity transportation infrastructure. This is great for very poor countries that cannot develop low-hanging fruit power generation opportunities due to their nonexistent grid, no paying customers, etc.

aga98mtl··on Collapse of international mobility a key factor behind wages growth
The country as a whole is not better off if the wage growth causes inflation and economic slowdown. It amounts to a wealth transfer to those who work currently from those who retired and now live on fixed income. It's a zero sum game.

Funnily I find that it's the older people who are the most against immigration. Let them enjoy the high prices for anything that involves local labor.

aga98mtl··on Ask HN: Is starting a web design and hosting business viable today?
Targeting small businesses in general is bad idea. You need to spend too much time to discover their needs. You need to flip the script by creating a cookie cutter solution for a very specific type of customer. Ex: Fence installers, AC repair shops, etc. You bring a complete package to them: site with industry specific lead capture form, content, social media, ppc campaign. They'll be happy to hear what you have to say if you present yourself as being specialized in their exact business type. You'll create value quickly for both you and the customer.
aga98mtl··on Privacy fears as Moscow metro rolls out facial recognition pay system
I'm also skeptical it would work decently without something else like your cell phone signal to reduce the number of possible faces.

I think the real value of this system is the intimidation factor. It really pushes the idea that the state can identify anyone anywhere is Moscow. It's useful to discourage both terrorism and political activism.

aga98mtl··on Leaked grant proposal details high-risk coronavirus research
>SARS was first discovered in a major city too.

How many major cities are there? hundreds. How many with a research center experimenting on coronavirus? (1 china, 2 in the USA) Just in China there are more than 100 cities with 1 millions people. Odds are 99+% that it has something to do with the research center. A very generous take would be that it has 1% chance of being unrelated.

aga98mtl··on Big oil coined ‘carbon footprints’ to blame us for their greed
> Isn't that just capitalism?

Soviet Russia was into oil production just as much as anyone else. The simple truth is that oil is very useful and the externalities are easy to ignore. The blame game is not useful for this situation.

aga98mtl··on Americans' life ratings reach record high
>Is there somewhere in modern society this schedule is available?

You could go live a hunter gatherer lifestyle in most forests in North America. Nobody will try to stop you if you are far enough from a road.

aga98mtl··on Amazon Is Creating Company Towns Across the United States
The housing could be normal rentals not conditional on keeping the job. I would guess that most Amazon facilities are located in urban areas. It would not be isolated mining town like in 1900s
aga98mtl··on Amazon Is Creating Company Towns Across the United States
Honestly, I was hoping Amazon was actually making housing for its workers. I think high density housing within walking distance of your job is the realistic solution for lowering co2 emissions.
aga98mtl··on Amazon Is Creating Company Towns Across the United States
The article seems to contain nothing that would qualify for the words "Company Town". It appears to boil down "look amazon is big, surely it means that it must be evil!".
aga98mtl··on My take on the study from MIT that predicts “societal collapse”
When a ressource gets rares, prices go up. This drives big incentives to work on substitutes, recycling, higher efficiency, etc.

Ex: People were predicting Peak Oil is the end of our civilisation. Turns out there is plenty of oil deep in the seabed if you are willing to pay $100 per barrel. In turn, $100 barrel push hard on consumers to use more efficient vehicles.

Market prices are a powerful signal that causes everyone to adapt.

aga98mtl··on China releases videos of its Zhurong Mars rover
Space exploration is a prestige game among world powers since the very beginning. China needs good PR pictures to show they can do just as well as NASA. If we are lucky they will try to one up each other for decades to come.
aga98mtl··on The NFT market bubble has popped?
The government controls the traditional US Dollars remittance systems. They can force absurdly bad exchange rates. Crypto shines where the government is messing with banking and currencies.
aga98mtl··on Ask HN: How can I order Starlink beta in North Africa?
Starlink will probably not be available in urban areas for home use. There is not enough bandwidth per km^2. It's meant for rural areas.
aga98mtl··on Sweden Covid-19 Update
Exactly the proper metric is excess death. Comparing cases and "covid" death between countries who use different methodologies is bad. The EU publishes up to date data here: https://www.euromomo.eu/graphs-and-maps#excess-mortality
aga98mtl··on Mall real estate company collected 5M images of shoppers
Do you have more details about this? Honestly it sounds like paranoid delusions. However, I could see using good-looking models playing fake customer for influencing high net worth individual to spend more. It might make financial sense in a high price, high margin business like a jewelry store. I also heard anecdotal reports of paying homeless people to hang out in front of a competitor's business to scare away customers.
aga98mtl··on Ask HN: Talked about my fave cereals now I see ads for the exact cereals. How?
Someone using the same ip (Your wifi router?) googled those terms or went to a product page.
aga98mtl··on Infection fatality rate of Covid-19 inferred from seroprevalence data [pdf]
Considering that there has been tens of millions of people with a covid infection, where are these people with chronic symptoms?
aga98mtl··on Vilified early over Covid-19 strategy, Sweden seems to have scourge controlled
Stockholm is actually the only big, dense, international city in the Nordic countries. See: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_the_most_populated_mun...

The disease likes dense urban areas with a lot of poor immigrants working in big care homes. Comparing countries is not really "fair". In Canada, Montreal got hit hard. In the USA, NYC, Philadelphia and Boston got it hard. It's a urban centric disease. So yes it's fair to compare to Sweden to Germany, France, UK and Belgium.

aga98mtl··on Photoreal Roman Emperor Project
I feel like they should have used more pictures of people from central Italy in their dataset. These images look very northern european to me.
aga98mtl··on How satellite ‘megaconstellations’ will photobomb astronomy images
>Perhaps in the US, but other countries, even poor ones, manage to do rural internet fine without cluttering the night sky.

Most of sub-saharan Africa has slow and expensive internet. I would guess there is 1 billion people who will have access to the internet via mobile tower with starlink & competitors backhaul in a few years. This is enormous.

aga98mtl··on WordSafety: Check a name for unwanted meanings in foreign languages
I tried the classic blunder "Buick Lacrosse" which sounds exactly like "Buick the Scam" in Québécois. This tool does not understand Québécois.
aga98mtl··on KiwiCo Eureka Crate: Monthly Science Kit Subscription
It's available in many languages too.
aga98mtl··on No Recent Automation Revolution
A larger amount of people can now afford landscaping services because earth moving cost have now gone down. Poor people used to go barefoot before industrialization.

Producing more with less human input is how we raise the living standards of everyone in the long term.

aga98mtl··on I wrote a SaaS product because the internet made me believe it'd make me rich
The trick with FB ads for non-impulse buys is to write great content that build trust. The FB ads should be a clickbait headline that resonate with your target customers. Try to get them to sign up for a drip email sequence based on their goals (not your tool). Email them and remarket them on FB until they are in the mood to buy.
aga98mtl··on Coronavirus Causes Damaging Blood Clots from Brain to Toes
I agree that they (article about rare effects) are not helpful in the mainstream media. However Hackernews is not mainstream media. Everyone here understands stats enough to put context around articles like these.
aga98mtl··on A case for ending lockdown
I think the point was that the total death count at this time is related with the size of nursing homes. Norway has numerous very small nursing home. Sweden has very big nursing home. All over the world we see that big nursing homes are impossible to protect. Belgium locked down harder than Sweden but has the worst stats in Europe. The nursing home death are often 80% to 90% of all death.

COVID-19 is bad, but if you exclude the nursing homes from the stats it doesnt justify the lockdown damage. Is there a realistic plan to isolate big nursing homes somewhere?

aga98mtl··on A fight against Amazon becomes a state matter in Quebec
What type of insurance can't you get in Quebec? Insurance is usually cheaper in Quebec compared to its peers (Ontario & BC).
