afruitpie··on ChatGPT Work
Sad, I liked that ChatGPT had a native app on macOS. I don’t understand why OpenAI and Anthropic have to rely on vending universal apps when their whole MO is code being dirt cheap.
afruitpie··on OpenAI agrees with Dept. of War to deploy models in their classified network
Just canceled my subscription! I immediately received an email with the subject “We’d love your feedback on why you canceled your ChatGPT plus subscription” and a link to a survey.

I linked to https://notdivided.org/ as the reasoning why.

afruitpie··on Xfinity using WiFi signals in your house to detect motion
As far as I’m aware, Xfinity fiber customers have to use the provided “Xfinity Wi-Fi Gateway” and cannot enable bridge mode.

If anyone knows a way around this, please share! I want to connect my Xfinity ONT directly to my UniFi router.

afruitpie··on Marine pilot loses command after ejecting from F-35B that kept flying
> The crash is Marine's third in several weeks

Should be “the Marines’ third.” I don’t mean to be a stickler, but for a moment I thought this one pilot was crashing a plane a week!

afruitpie··on Ask HN: Performance of Apple Sillicon vs. ThinkPads (Or Other Linux Laptops)
In my much shorter 5 years, I’ve seen devs exclusively using Apple hardware.

And in my team, our dev environment has become increasingly local!

afruitpie··on T-Mobile users thought they had a lifetime price lock–guess what happened next
Now that porting between MVNOs with eSIM is free and dead simple, I can’t think of a reason to stick with the big 3 carriers.

The MVNO I stuck with even has a slick way to port between networks!

afruitpie··on Vercel completes $250M Series E round at $3.25B valuation
They do also charge (dearly) for usage.
afruitpie··on SWPC issues first G4 geomagnetic storm watch since 2005
My concern comes from my own naïveté. I don’t know enough about flying to know how concerned I should be.

Hearing there’s a storm that affects navigation is an eyebrow-raiser, especially when sitting at an airport gate like I am.

afruitpie··on “Meta spent almost as much as the Manhattan Project on GPUs in today's dollars”
I’m surprised how “cheap” the Manhattan Project and Apollo Program were.

It’s bizarre we put people on the Moon in the ‘60s for an amount of money similar to Apple’s recent stock buybacks.

afruitpie··on I found one of my first programs (Java, 2011) on the Wayback Machine and it runs
Amazon Smile was shut down, unfortunately: https://www.aboutamazon.com/news/company-news/amazon-closing...
afruitpie··on Improve Writing (AI) for Apple Notes?
I’m a huge fan of Raycast for everything.

The AI plugin included in the Raycast Pro subscription [0] can be configured with some neat “improve writing on whatever is highlighted” features.

afruitpie··on Democracy Dies Behind Paywalls – Paywalled
Apple News+ is trying to be that. I get it through my Apple One family plan.

The home page is shamefully Trump spam and tabloid garbage, but the magazine section isn’t terrible. I read The Atlantic and The New Yorker frequently on it.

afruitpie··on Ford Mustang Mach-E using BlueCruise at time of crash: NTSB
I wish headlights + taillights were required to be always on, or at least on by default.
afruitpie··on Welcome to the VAIO Library
The VPCSB [0] had a switch at the top that could manually switch between integrated graphics for better battery, or discrete graphics for better performance. It always felt cool turning it on before gaming.

afruitpie··on World Backup Day

afruitpie··on MTA board votes to approve new $15 toll to drive into Manhattan
Even in dense US cities, being on two wheels is dangerous.

Many people buy a car for safety, which ends up making the road even more dangerous!

(To clarify, I’m not taking a jab at people looking out for their personal safety.)

afruitpie··on D2 Playground
The proprietary layout engine is named TALA. IMO the docs are pretty transparent about TALA being closed source and behind a paywall.

afruitpie··on VW is reviving a storied American brand to sell electric SUVs
Seems like an odd revive since International Scouts are relatively unknown outside enthusiast groups.
afruitpie··on AdGuard Home: Network-wide ad- and tracker-blocking DNS server
Another great (and free!) option is Mullvad’s ad-blocking DNS over TLS or HTTPS.

afruitpie··on Car insurance in America is too cheap
Anecdotal, but since I started cycling I’ve noticed an absurd amount of cars have license plate tabs that have been expired for years. There’s even a Porsche Taycan in my apartment that’s been driving without plates for over a year.

It doesn’t seem like registration is enforced in any meaningful way.

afruitpie··on Updates on Grounding of Boeing 737 MAX 9 Aircraft
Are you thinking of Boom Supersonic?

I know next to nothing about aviation or economics, but my gut feeling is a plane with ~80 seats for international flights will be expensive.

afruitpie··on Amazon Prime Video starts showing ads in January unless you pay $2.99/month xtra
I just canceled my annual subscription and found out I get a refund for the 5 unused months I paid for. Cool!
afruitpie··on Google podcasts is shutting down
iCloud also supports custom domains if you’re paying for iCloud storage. I use this since I was paying for storage anyway.

afruitpie··on Gabe Newell forced to testify in person in Steam antitrust case [pdf]
How would an in-person deposition be better than a remote one?
afruitpie··on Show HN: Internet Speed Test
Why use this instead of one of the various other speed tests? Off the top of my head:

1. Ookla SpeedTest https://www.speedtest.net

2. Netflix Fast https://fast.com

3. Cloudflare Speed Test (my personal favorite) https://speed.cloudflare.com

afruitpie··on Gpt3.5 just adding a random dude's photo in the reply
Scared me for a moment. I thought Reddit had enshittified to the point of needing a login to view posts.
afruitpie··on T-Mobile switches users to pricier plans
Anecdote incoming so take it with a grain of salt.

Visible is great, but struggles with moving service between phones. I was told it would take at least a week to move from iPhone to iPhone (both eSIM!).

In my experience, US Mobile (not to be confused with US Cellular) is every bit as good as Visible, but has better customer support.
