aficiomaquinas··on Japan: The land that doesn't need Ozempic
If by lifestyle you mean behavioral disorder, It seems to me that the science from the last 10 years is starting to point in the opposite direction. If I may recommend, there is a great presentation by Dr. Robert Lustig called "Fat Chance: Fructose 2.0". [0]: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ceFyF9px20Y
aficiomaquinas··on Japan: The land that doesn't need Ozempic
This is exactly my point. There are many patients that do require GLP-1 agonists to realistically lose weight. It's ridiculous to say that a country doesn't need it just because fewer people are obese.
aficiomaquinas··on Japan: The land that doesn't need Ozempic
GLP-1 Agonists are very interesting drugs. There are ongoing clinical trials for their application in neurodegenerative diseases because they seem to have, among others, excellent neuroprotective effects, they are great at lowering inflammation. There is a good paper about that. I think it's misleading and ridiculous to say that Japan does not need Ozempic. Not all obesity is simply caused by eating habits. There is a very important factor that has to do with oxidative/nitrosative stress and inflammation that may as well have to do with other underlying diseases, syndromes, etc. and that we are just starting to understand. The science is not "settled" with obesity, as much as we've progressed with understanding it, and it's really weird to me for someone to use such a clickbait title... aficiomaquinas··on What's the simplest way to kill a Delaware C Corp?
In order to surrender the foreign qualification in the state of California you'll have to file your last California return, be sure to mark the return as final in the actual form and make sure it's correct. Hire a CPA. California franchise tax is paid in advance, so don't pay the 800 dollars for next year, otherwise they'll make you beg them to give it back, which they'll eventually will, after a couple of years, by the time the company will not exist and that payment will be unrecoverable. Once the final Cal return is filed, you'll have to file form SURC.

You'll have to file your final federal tax return, too. Although you might be able to do it yourself with Turbotax, I'd hire a CPA.

You'll have to legally dissolve the company with the articles of dissolution and make sure all the previous board meetings and cap table is sound. Then file the dissolution with the Delaware Secretary of State. If you don't hire a lawyer to double-check the corporation for you, you'll be exposing yourself to liability down the road, which will could be costlier than the lawyer's fees. Corporations must liquidate their assets, and that requires filing forms with the IRS, too. After that, you'll have to close the bank accounts, vendor accounts, credit cards, etc.

I think it would be interesting if you could share some examples of what you believe to be real truths that never change.
aficiomaquinas··on Wealthy Americans Targeted by U.S. in Panama Tax-Fraud Probe
Switzerland is a tax-heaven for the ultra wealthy. These individuals buy passports from countries with territorial or no tax at all. This way they can open bank accounts claiming to be tax residents in such countries, and avoid tax reporting to their true tax resident country. When the OECD designed the information exchange protocol they did learn about this phenomenon. It turns out that the implementation of CRS (common reporting standards) was actually different from country to country. The OECD negotiated each deal individually with all the different countries in the world. One of the very few features of AEOI (automatic exchange of information) in the CRS that Switzerland did not sign fully with the OECD, was the "enhanced" validation of the account holder citizenship. It was marked "optional" for Swiss banks to validate. [1] Switzerland has been a tax haven for so many years now (they invented the business, we could argue), that they don't care about the small fish anymore. They are all about the UHNW (ultra high net worth) individuals and families. Now, there is some interesting things to be noted for such individuals. Many centamillionaires and billionaires are tax residents in many countries. They own properties and businesses all across the world, which often needs you to have tax IDs in those countries, either as a natural person, as a corporation or both. It doesn't matter if the corporation, in such case, is a complicated and obfuscated entity because the bank reports the tax id of the significant owners, not regarding how many layers of corporate structures there are (except for exotic "non-incorporated" entities such as trusts, which also serve the purpose of reducing tax burdens or hiding away assets). Most tax systems across the world were designed for normal people who don't own stuff all around the world and are based upon the principle of worldwide taxation based on your "true" residence. Truth is many of these billionaires are not true only-residents of any country. They might be traveling around the world for many months each year, having multiple homes across the world. So, which should be their "true" tax resident country? Apart from the USA, which taxes Americans regardless of where they reside, most of the remaining countries of the world are pretty ambiguous about this dilemma and most importantly, they are unable to enforce taxation of the worldwide income, and in the end, in practice, people with multiple citizenships and permanent residencies just choose whichever is more convenient when making their invoices or opening their bank accounts. That's why Switzerland may score so high on the list. Almost all UHNW individuals have bank accounts in Switzerland because they open them with their most convenient passports and/or permanent residence cards, and they prefer to bank in Switzerland because they have better perks, better mobile apps, better account managers, they can get an AMEX black card guaranteed by their private banking account balance, and much more.

Somehow this phrase has become a catch-all insult I've seen often at hacker news, yet it lacks meaning.
aficiomaquinas··on Why doesn't capitalism produce good kettles?
Yes. I've bought several Zojirushi products over the years and I've found them to be super reliable. Buy a ceramic tea kettle and this water boiler. Much better than an electric tea kettle. The insulation is superb and that makes it energy efficient. You don't have to wait because it's always ready.

Also, their thermos are insanely good.

aficiomaquinas··on Why cancer cells waste so much energy
I didn't mean that. Simply, pharmaceutical companies don't have incentives to invest in drugs that they won't profit from. Expired patent drugs come off first on that list.

Thank you for spending the time to write so far and for wishing me good health. I really appreciate it. I could tell about your background in your writing.

> what seems to have work for you does not mean that it will work for everybody else.

I agree with you on this. I just hope there was more funding or incentives for scientists studying this which, so far, has helped me and many people I know.

The results in monkeys seem to suppress thyroid function, but:

> No evidence of thyroid effects were detected in the serum of human volunteers who ingested approximately 1 mg/l. of ClO2 in drinking water as a result of routine use in the community water treatment process.

I don't acidify the ClO2 solution.

I think it really depends on your statistical survival rate. If you're almost guaranteed to die, there's less of a concern in using yourself as a test subject.

I'm not a doctor, but there seems to be some medical basis in some pathologies. If you are a doctor or scientist perhaps your input would be greatly appreciated in the following papers:

About the conspiratorial mindset, as you call it, for example, if YouTube censors “共匪” (“communist bandit”), then it must be a really bad idea, right? In which cases do you think it's reasonable not to trust YouTube blindly.

https://www.theverge.com/2020/5/26/21270290/youtube-deleting...

aficiomaquinas··on Why cancer cells waste so much energy
I don't agree with trusting YouTube blindly. I trust my friends and colleagues that have cured their cancer better. Also note that chlorine dioxide is not sodium hypoclorite. It's like comparing salt (which also contains chlorine) with sugar.
aficiomaquinas··on Why cancer cells waste so much energy
This is exactly my point. If anything, the effects of chlorine dioxide seem minimal or barely noticeable compared to chemo, and of course, much better than dying of cancer. I'm not saying that cancer patients should skip chemo, though!
aficiomaquinas··on Why cancer cells waste so much energy
There is a very interesting book around the metabolic route for treating cancer. It's called "Starving cancer" by Jane McLelland. It talks about using over the counter drugs and supplements that have been studied for their metabolic blocking properties for cancer, as well as changing the diet to reduce as much as possible the nutrients that cancer craves the most according to their metabolic phenotype. Most of the times it's glucose or glutamine, but the trick is to block as many metabolic pathways using the drugs so that mutation is prevented. Most of these drugs have their patents expired and are quite cheap. The author had a very aggressive form of cancer with less than 5% statistic survival rate and were able to survive and go back to NED (no evidence of disease). It's not exactly a substitute for standard therapy such as chemo, but there's many people who also went to NED just with her protocol. I tried this back when I had cancer, and even though my survival rate was very high just on standard care, my tumor markers went way down almost to normal on the first cycle combined with Jane's protocol. Unfortunately, the cancer industry and pharmaceutical industry won't really invest much money on clinical trials for expired patent, or even existing drugs in their portfolio. There are a couple of independent clinical trials going on, so far, with good results AFAIC. Another very controversial, but interesting treatment for cancer that will probably never see the light is Chlorine Dioxide. And don't you dare write that on Facebook or YouTube because it'll be outright banned or deleted for "spreading misinformation". I have friends and persons I know that went to NED just on chlorine dioxide and diet. Having used it myself for many months with no negative effects, and, after chemo, I can't help but cringe every time someone tells me that it's "very toxic". Oh lord, you should have seen what chemo was like. Now, that was toxic.

aficiomaquinas··on Psiloscoby: Psilocybin Brewed by Kombucha
As a cancer survivor, I can confirm the absolutely amazing, life-changing effect that psilocybin had on my depression. After cancer, it gets really difficult to "reintegrate" with society. Most conversations sound absolutely pointless, I felt like there was less grip surface between the concept of me and almost everyone. The depressions after cancer are commonplace, and mine were strong, too. The difference in depression recurrence and intensity after a single 3g dose of psilocybe cubensis was spectacular. After a couple of months I started on psilocybin micro doses and, so far, along with hormone replacement therapy (I lost a testicle to cancer), I'm finally feeling OK. Much better than OK. :D

I'm not saying the market share is decreasing, I'm saying that many people are moving away from Apple. This is purely anecdotal, but I don't remember any people I know moving away from Apple 10 years ago. I think the story is very different today in the pro user space.
aficiomaquinas··on Sketch: From 1 to One Million users
I wish Sketch was available for Windows or Linux. I don't think I'll buy a Mac ever again. More and more people are moving away from Apple altogether as the ecosystem has become an inescapable walled garden. I think ARM will become that last nail in the "walled garden" coffin.

As a victim of bullying in my childhood, I can attest to this. When I hear people say that they cannot fathom how a person could walk into a restaurant and kill everybody, I don't tell them, but I do know what kind of anger you need to develop to be able to do such thing. That could have been me, but fortunately, it wasn't. I'm grateful I was able to overcome that.
aficiomaquinas··on Ask HN: How does WhatsApp make money?
Well, that's what they say, but being closed source it's reasonable to think there might be backdoors somewhere. Besides, WhatsApp is not p2p, but client server based. Nobody knows for sure if the NSA Prism program still exists, but it does, Facebook would probably be part of it.

Sorry for the dumb question. Could someone please explain how could the computing workload require a 200 Gigabits network infrastructure? If we could break down the usage in percentages, how much of it would account for storage such as iSCSI, SMB, NFS, and how much for everything else? What network protocols and which transport layer do these workloads usually use?

Interesting turn of events. Amazon AWS recently opened a region (Apr 19) in Hong Kong. I wonder if it'll have any impact for them and that industry in general. Perhaps Hong Kong will be inside the great firewall in the near future, too.
aficiomaquinas··on How we got our AWS bill to around 2% of revenue
If you are extremely cheap like me, only have to run cronjobs at certain times or only need your instances to be running at predictable times you can also use the [AWS Instance Scheduler](https://aws.amazon.com/solutions/implementations/instance-sc... ). At my last job we were running SAP on EC2 and we were able to lower our bill like 50% or so by only running the instance 9-5 Mon-Fri. Now I use the Instance Scheduler for running cronjobs every day on a T3a instance and it costs less than a $1 usd per month. You can also configure your cronjob to stop the instance once it ends, that way the scheduler will only need to start it and you'll save the most (./myscript && shutdown -h now)
