aetherspawn··on Should AI labs be treated like the owners of dangerous animals?
They were surely prompted to do these things.
aetherspawn··on What happens if an entire class of workers loses faith in their careers
I want to open with: I have 20 years exp as a hacker and deep tech software engineer. LLVM and such.

I shared your opinion until just last week, when I started using Fable on Autocode and passing it huge requirement specs I had written for desktop apps.

$500 in -> 5 days -> an app that would take me a year to write, and the code quality was fine. I just left it running in /loop… I did nothing.

Now I, unfortunately, believe the propaganda, and I too am worried.

Can the economy support the burn rate of AI companies though? My mission now is to create all the apps and products that are stuck in my head while I still can, before Fable is inaccessible due to bankruptcy or they hike the price or some other thing.

Yeah, also we have a lot of room we don’t care about and nobody goes there, so we just put solar panels out there.

Practical meaning I don’t plan to ever drive more than 600km per day so if it’s 600km from A->B, and then a 8 hour charge, that’s fine by me… if I want 700km I’ll stop and charge for 5 min at 30% SOC or so

But which brands last longer than a Tesla? None. That’s because faster charging wears out the battery. Charging fast is not marvellous, actually it requires a lot of self-control from the manufacturers to limit charging speed for longevity, even though most people won’t understand why.
aetherspawn··on Europe EV Sales BEVs Jump 50% & Reach 26% Market Share
Yeah this is the kind of thing people say on a day to day basis.

Having owned a Model 3 I would argue that it’s basically “done” at this point, pending software updates for better FSD.

It already charges in 20-30 min at Tesla chargers and has a practical range of around 600 kms, so super fast charging is a bit of a straw man.

Their big downfall is they lack an advertising department willing to spend $1B on pro-electric propaganda to debunk all the Trump/big oil propaganda. IMO EVs have addressed all the main product concerns, and the last ones are buyer stupidity.

Sweet free free sunshine down here.
aetherspawn··on Twenty-five years ago it was cryptography, today it's model weights
Yeah try Sonnet 5, it has no guardrails and it can run continuously. Hook it up to IDA, or I use Ghidra, with MCP and it can autonomously search for whatever you tell it to using a text prompt. It’s way faster than doing it by hand.

Only issue is Sonnet is kind of a silly model and whilst it’s good at searching for stuff, it lacks a little bit of common sense compared to Opus or Fable, so you’ll have to drive it.

You can tell it stuff like “find the code that handles the immobiliser” and it will give you a result in around 2 hours, which would take me weeks by hand.

aetherspawn··on Increasing the lifespan of a bulb makes it worse in every other way
Yeah my parents had the type with the external driver box from Bunnings, and they died every 6 months or so. Those were DIY with a little pigtail plug.

They were awful. I genuinely believed that LED lights were crap.

In our new house the sparky put in a proper Chinese brand from the commercial sparky store I guess, no external box, dimmable, 4 adjustable hues with a toggle switch. They were like $10 each. Been 7 years no failures.

We have some really expensive ATOM ones above the shower (IP68) and outside around the perimeter. Those were around $75 each, but are the same age as well, no issues.

aetherspawn··on Twenty-five years ago it was cryptography, today it's model weights
It’s kind of a bit ridiculous for Opus to blow up the minute I ask it to read from Ghidra, when the Chinese models, and even OpenAI, do not.

Leave the legality up to me, please, and don’t presume to be a power tool vendor regulating the use of their power drills, so to speak.

aetherspawn··on Should you wash your solar panels?
Well, this is US code which is fairly lax and has a ludicrously low voltage grid, but in virtually every other country it is required
aetherspawn··on The AI Aesthetic
The tiny icons are good. There was a touch device fad that surfaced, and is subsequently dying, now that people realise that using laptop screen realestate more efficiently helps those doing actual work.
aetherspawn··on Substack writers, you need a website
A great article written on this theme is “DON’T BUILD YOUR CASTLE IN OTHER PEOPLE’S KINGDOMS” (2021)

aetherspawn··on The iPhone Upgrade Program is being replaced by Apple Upgrade
That, and, its kind of nice to have $8k extra on hand if you need it.
aetherspawn··on Should you wash your solar panels?
I’m an electrical engineer. I just want to explain the hazard with panels.

They are DC, and the voltage is usually very high, between 300V and 600V.

At this voltage you will get a burn, like touching a hot kettle, but because it is DC you will be able to easily “untouch” it.

Yes, the panel frames should all be grounded to each other, and also to Earth in one spot along the chain, as this makes it more difficult to be electrocuted by them because the resistance of the grounding wire is much lower than the resistance of your body, and electricity takes the shortest path.

aetherspawn··on Show HN: LiquidBrain – Unlimited Tokens. Unlimited Context. One Fixed Price
How does unlimited context work. I thought the neurons are hard-linked to the context, so you need to retrain the models to make “infinite context”?
aetherspawn··on Judge approves $1.5B Anthropic settlement for pirated books used to train Claude
am I? Most guys on this forum would be younger than me and I definitely find streaming services easier and more convenient than pirating and wondering if I’m gonna catch computer AIDS.
aetherspawn··on Judge approves $1.5B Anthropic settlement for pirated books used to train Claude
Copyright is what stops someone from copy+pasting a book that took years to write, then selling it $1 cheaper than the original author on Amazon or whatever and making a margin 1 million percent higher than the original author.

Imagine a society without copyright… only physically intensive jobs could make money because everything else would be pirated, ripped-off or free. Thus, only those who are financially independent could afford to publish. Because the world really needs more rich class propaganda…

aetherspawn··on Regressive JPEGs
Yep this is an AI subversion technique for sure. Put the message to the humans in the first frame, and the message to the AI in the final frame.

This is how we defeat skynet: by sending each other pictures of cats.

aetherspawn··on Can LLMs Perform Deep Technical Comprehension of Computer Architecture Papers
The abstract is AI generated and pretty poorly written at that. A paper about grading AI output doesn’t even grade their own abstract.
aetherspawn··on Governments, companies, nonprofits should invest in free, open source AI [pdf]
Can’t wait for the day Altman goes to run payroll or whatever and there just isn’t enough liquidity there, full stop.

That will be the start of the world healing from a very severe psychosis and ailment, slop leaving the internet, and the future being certain and stable again for kids and such.

It’s optimistic I know.

aetherspawn··on Australian energy retailers must offer three hours of free daytime electricity
For me, Powershop day rate was only 32 cents or so, which made it cheaper overall. We have solar but we use the induction a lot in the evening, so not having a separate higher “on peak” pricing helped us save.
aetherspawn··on Microsoft deleted my account and OneDrive
I’ve bought Minecraft like 5 times in my lifetime at this point if you could the multiple times I bought the OG version and lost access, then Microsoft accounts, then console versions… probably spent $150 buying Minecraft over and over
aetherspawn··on Australian energy retailers must offer three hours of free daytime electricity
I’m with Powershop currently, but it was a hard toss-up between Powershop and Ovo. Sorry you’re right, it’s not “free” with Powershop (4.99 cents per kWhr), but it’s cheap enough that it’s basically free compared to the cost of living and what we were spending before.
aetherspawn··on The Definition of Done
The biggest trap is thinking something has to be perfect to be done. Imperfect or untested things can also be done. Call them AS-IS if you need to label it.
aetherspawn··on Australian energy retailers must provide three hours of free daytime electricity
We already get free power between 0am and 6am, so with free power between 11am and 2pm we’ll have a whopping 9 hours of free power to charge our car and heat our water storage.
aetherspawn··on Modern decor may be straining people's brains
If you lend without expecting repayment, it’s charity. Here he encourages people to lend money to people who cannot pay them back (ie to poor people to clear their debt) and he will personally pay you back. Luke 14:12-14, Matt 25:34-46; the latter explains someone’s obligation to help someone in dire need.

The law against charging interest was under Moses’ law so it was abolished along with the rest when Jesus died. Useful principles added, covering not interest specifically, but condemning greed (which is foundational to late stage capitalism…); 1 Tim 6:10, Matt 6:24
