aepearson··on Launch HN: Boxouse (YC W17) – Shipping-container homes
Definitely do not take this guy's photo advice. But DEFINITELY hire a pro and let them do their work. The existing photos on the site are a huge turnoff. It should cost you a few thousand dollars to hire a top notch photographer - their work will pay you back tenfold at a minimum though.

"Large sensor, low f number, go wide angle" means absolutely nothing...don't go to a photographer saying some shit like that.

For real.

If this is "not economical" - I wanna know where you're getting your weed. :P

aepearson··on Ask HN: If you were to switch career, what would you do?
I feel ya - the struggle is real.
aepearson··on Ask HN: What do you regret in life?
I regret dedicating my life to sitting behind a computer building things that don't exist and don't really matter to anyone - rather than making a real difference to real people in the real world. I also regret that that endeavor has severely limited my time spent with the people I love most, and exploring the world.

You are definitely not alone in that feeling...
aepearson··on Lucee – A lightweight dynamic scripting language for the JVM
Thank you for the correction!
aepearson··on Lucee – A lightweight dynamic scripting language for the JVM
Sounds like it's been a LONG time since you looked at ColdFusion - I encourage you to re-visit. A lot has changed since the late 90's...it's a great language, not a nightmare at all.
aepearson··on Lucee – A lightweight dynamic scripting language for the JVM
Touchè! haha
aepearson··on Lucee – A lightweight dynamic scripting language for the JVM
Google "CFML" - that should keep you busy for a while :)
aepearson··on Lucee – A lightweight dynamic scripting language for the JVM
This is definitely not a new language...it's been around since 1995. The website does not make it particularly clear that this is a CFML engine though haha.
aepearson··on Lucee – A lightweight dynamic scripting language for the JVM
Because it's completely unrelated to Javascript...
aepearson··on Lucee – A lightweight dynamic scripting language for the JVM
I love Lucee, long live CFML!
aepearson··on Show HN: Find hotels near conference that you can reach by foot and public transit
Great company to work with as well - good luck!
aepearson··on Show HN: Find hotels near conference that you can reach by foot and public transit
Depends on what you are looking for and how much work you want to do. Booking.com is one of the easiest because you can simply refer to their "booking" page for purchase. With others you would likely need to have your own purchase page (http://rentalsunited.com/ for example...you'd want to get set up as a Channel Partner).
aepearson··on Show HN: Find hotels near conference that you can reach by foot and public transit
Very cool implementation, I really like it! - are you using anything besides Booking.com?
aepearson··on Show HN: Minimalist (Brutalist?) Real Estate Web Design
Very cool read! Got me all pumped up reading it actually.

I'm seeing this website in an entirely new light now haha.

How about bounce rate comparison?

From a user perspective - I spent more time on the site than I do any other real estate site...because I was trying to figure out where to find things, and it took significantly longer to look at multiple areas than any other site.

I'm not sure time on site is a reasonable measure of success - but I also think 9 minutes is impressive regardless :)

You definitely have me thinking about doing some experimentation in minimalism (we, apparently, service a very similar niche).

aepearson··on Show HN: Minimalist (Brutalist?) Real Estate Web Design
I sort of like it. Basically a slightly nicer version of craigslist.

To be honest though... With my experience in this particular niche...I don't "get it".

The pages are printer friendly (a lot of realtors gripe about that). Pages load fast. Gallery/map view. It's challenging to integrate with that many MLS' as well...Some good stuff in there. It's obviously you put a lot of work into it.

Great job on doing something against the grain.

If the purpose is to make money...probably not the greatest site. Other than a very tiny sliver of the population who appreciates this sort of approach (ie. hackernews readers), most people are going to bounce right off the site.

The single biggest missing piece is any sort of search functionality. It's REALLY annoying to use the site for anything other than a bit of browsing.

That said - great work...I hope you got paid!

EDIT * The more time I spend trying to hate this website, the more I end up liking it. Mission accomplished :)

aepearson··on Show HN: Airbnb but without code
I get zero results for every search I try. EDIT : I think because I was searching outside of San Fran (looks like there are only 6 properties there, probably for your testing)

Either the site is super buggy or my browser is just barfing everywhere. Most photos don't load.

I think I'm getting the point now though - this seems like a GREAT way to provide proof of concept!

aepearson··on Show HN: Airbnb but without code
I'm not really sure what I'm looking at - it doesn't really appear to "do" anything.
aepearson··on Ask HN: How can I tell if I have programming aptitude?
I had never heard of FizzBuzz before this exact moment. What a weird "test"...
aepearson··on Tell HN: My own version of the American dream
I don't understand why you'd need to relocate to work for a startup. I can see how it would be really exciting, for sure!

But...can't you do the same work remotely from your home country. From a place that doesn't cost $4,000/mo in rent?

aepearson··on Show HN: Potbox – A premium cannabis subscription club
I was wondering this too - I realize this only exists right now in a small test market...does that mean you're relying on in-person delivery?
aepearson··on Are techies really 57% more likely to apply for a job if they know the salary?
Personally? I am 100% more likely.
aepearson··on Ask HN: Flow chart application for Mac?
UPDATE: I ended up just using Google Docs. Looks pretty good!
aepearson··on Ask HN: Best place to buy SSL from?
Godaddy is easy, and cheap.
aepearson··on Did I ever mention that I fucking hate the fucking web
Dude, can we be friends? Because I feel like we'd get along - asshole.
aepearson··on [dead]
Would you be interested in an app that tells you, before it even begins, if you're experiencing a heart attack...or a panic attack?

lolz

aepearson··on Show HN: A 60 second meditation tool to help clear your mind
I'm a skeptic for the most part.

However, this worked for me. Thank you.

Sometimes problems seem so big until you consider how small they really are.

aepearson··on Ask HN: Should I testify?
Seems like any company you would potentially work for that is turned off by the fact you testified against a former employer who was BREAKING THE LAW...probably isn't the type of place you should be working. Right?
