advertising··on Zika Infection May Affect Adult Brain Cells
They did this in Brasil decades back. Mandatory home inspections where they had patrols go through every single house and eliminate water pools where mosquitos could breed, mostly all made by humans.

I believe the eliminated mosquitos for a certain period of time but this technique didn't work in the states because Americans were adverse to government agencies coming into their homes and telling them what do to.

Who here has frequently used facebook and then got off the platform? What's been the hardest part without it? Was it hard? Do you feel disconnected or has communication actually been affected with the people who matter to you?

advertising··on The British are Googling what the E.U. is, hours after voting to leave it
Some voter demographic info - http://www.bbc.com/news/uk-politics-36616028

- Rural areas mostly voted to leave

- Younger voters voted to stay, but turnout by younger voters was lower

- Of 30 areas with the fewest graduates (I assume this means college? wasn't clear) 28 voted to leave

advertising··on The British are Googling what the E.U. is, hours after voting to leave it
My first impression of the result was shouldn't there be a requirement for a larger difference than 1 - 2% for something like this to pass? A majority of at least 65% for example? I don't know what I'm talking about really but that seems logical, what do you all think?

I don't think people who wanted to stay are now wondering what the EU is...
advertising··on Ask HN: If my startup fails, what are the impacts on my future career prospects?
Anytime I would see a resume with CEO / Founder on it I would immediately pass.

My thinking was this person won't be a good fit working for someone else if they felt the need to strike out on their own. Just like I wouldn't hire myself.

This was when hiring for a sales role mind you. Obviously different for different positions / experience.

CTO wouldn't scare me if we were hiring for a lower position.

The TSA and state of travel in the US constantly reminds me - "America is not a Country, it's a business" https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fCEDUiqfO-w

From trying to make revenue by creating "premium security" (see also pre-check, are you kidding me with this?), to reducing their workforce after already hiring the most apathetic, underpaid, and undereducated people I've encountered running security for airports.

Flying to Japan several times this year via LAX, airports in the US are not only some of the worst run (security-wise), but also the most unwelcoming anywhere I've been.

Last time I arrived back into the States, the immigration officers checking passports were full on wearing bullet proof vests. What is that about? What kind of way is that to welcome anyone into the country?

advertising··on All the lonely people
Most definitely. Most countries I've found that's true. Save for the last time I was in Paris haha.
advertising··on All the lonely people
In the states I found people will look you in the eye when oassing by and some will say hello. Most will respond back if you say hello or how are you.

When I'm in Mexico it's almost rude not greet someone with a customary "buenas dias/tardes/noches"

In Japan rarely people will look you in the eye period.

advertising··on Why I turned down $500K and shut down my startup
Sounds like the right move.

If you had discovered this when you were 6 months in, spent 50% of the cash and had employees would you have made the same decision? To pull the plug and return remaining capital vs trying to make it work.

advertising··on Snapchat Passes Twitter in Daily Usage
The worst thing about snapchat when traveling however, is battery life.

That app literally sucks the juice out of your phone in 10 minutes.

Too much gps trying to load all their filters or something I don't know. I have to turn off cellular data when roaming or my phone will dead 20 minutes after I left the house.

advertising··on Snapchat Passes Twitter in Daily Usage
I downloaded snapchat a few years ago. Didn't know enough people on it and uninstalled after a month or two.

About a year ago I reinstalled as a way to share a trip I was on. It was perfect for that.

You'll post one perfect, curated photo to insta of your day, but you'll snap the random guy in the street, a funny sign in another language or just some bullshit you're up to.

Instagram feels a bit past its prime these days. I follow more commercial accounts on insta than I do on snapchat.

Snapchat it's like 40 close friends and fam. People who have my phone number.

Plus if you want to meet girls (sub 30 I should add) snap is the easiest way to connect lately.

advertising··on The Untold Story Behind Saudi Arabia’s U.S. Treasury Holdings
No dating scene whatsoever haha. Restaurants all segregated family / single males. No movie theatres. Entire country dry no alcohol.

The most amusing of all would be safe ways and grocery stores would turn into night club entrances as all the women would be shopping so guys would drive by the entrance and hold up signs with their phone numbers on them. So front of Safeway on a weekend night would be all these sports cars, benz's Etc. Too funny.

Jeddah a lot more lax than Riyadh.

Can't get into Mecca unless you're Muslim. We took a wrong turn on a road trip one time and were stopped and made to turn around.

Check points outside every city. If you were a female and didn't have written consent from your husband you weren't allowed to leave the city.

There's a book called confessions of an economic hit man - https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Confessions_of_an_Economic_Hit...

Essentially U.S. helps impoverished nations with infrastructure and other aid, but saddles them with debt in order to control them politically or otherwise.

The interesting part was when it came to Saudi Arabia, which had so much money it didn't need to take on debt to develop their infrastructure. So instead they bought America's debt as this article explains.

I lived in the kingdom from '82 - '04 which was quite an interesting time span to have lived there. Things have definitely changed as a younger, mostly western educated generation, returns home and social unrest cannot be quelled with unlimited social programs anymore.

Most of the Saudi's I know now simply take american concepts/franchises and spin them out over there. From hamburger chains to house cleaning services. Works pretty well for them.

The most annoying thing was the weekends were on Thursday and Friday, so if you wanted to do anything international with a bank you could only do it Mon - Wed as their banks were closed on their weekends and then U.S. banks were closed Sat / Sun.

I believe you can still simply walk to a certain part of town and watch an execution, along with a couple of hands once a week there. Just you know, if you wanted something to do on a weekend.

I blow through that 500MB in 2 - 3 days is the problem.

A better, but not very cheap solution is to just rent a wifi hotspot for around $8 - $10 / day if you're on a short trip. Get 1 gig / day as well.

I'm just going to get a japanese plan once I live here.

advertising··on The attention economy
I got into work mode the past couple years of my life and spent most time either working or speaking with people, then browsing my phone in the downtimes / before bed / first thing in the morning.

I hadn't read a book in a couple of years and it was scary the first time I tried again.

Literally could not read more than 1 - 1.5 pages without my mind wandering or feeling the pang to check the feed on my phone. Kind of horrifying to be honest.

Took me a couple weeks to get back in the groove and actually have some decent comprehension / retention. Personally, reading again was a great way to rebuild my attention span and just rewiring my brain in general. I had no idea how bad I had become.

advertising··on Charge, a phone company with features for nerds
I've enjoyed that for awhile now as well with T-Mobile. Except being in Japan more frequently as of late, the 2g speeds for free are great for essentials (messaging, maps, email) but damn I'd love a better package for LTE speeds that isn't like $50 for 200mb or whatever it is.

Maybe I just need to do more research.

advertising··on My Biggest Regret as a Programmer
Hindsight. Could have become VP or stayed with apple and gotten hit by a bus the next year. So many paths that could have played out as a lowly "programmer" and this person is just looking at his/her sister as if it's as simple as option A or option B and if only he/she picked the other. That's not life. I'm not down with this post.
