aduwah··on Slack has raised our charges by $195k per year
Found the manager.

I would go mental without DMs

aduwah··on Keeping secrets out of logs (2024)
Great article! I will definitely reference it in my upcoming discussions. I had some hard time defending having an EU based o11y stack for our EU based infra. I found it hard to articulate on the spot that there are myriads of places where sensitive/personal data can get in the logs and cause leaks, or make GDPR angry.
aduwah··on AI surveillance should be banned while there is still time
The stuffed animal has only a sentimental value and it will not have a statistics based and geopolitically biased opinion that it shares with you and influences your decisions. If you want to see how bad a chatbot can be as a friend, see the recent case when it has driven a poor mentally vulnerable minor to suicide

aduwah··on Ask HN: How do you avoid job hunting burnout?
I never had a proper job offer after 3 interviews tbh. Most 90%+ jobs need at least 4-5 rounds.

I assume 3 is for startups

aduwah··on Commodore 64 Ultimate
Am I the only one who gets sad when looking at the site? The resentment of modern computing and interconnected life feels extremely wrong with a Commodore brand on it.

Don't get me wrong, I would love to have the box, but to me commodore means the complete opposite. It was the tech that inspired me to start learning and later building complex systems. The evolution of tech after this machine did not steal anything from me, but enriched my life both financially and otherwise.

aduwah··on What would a Kubernetes 2.0 look like
You don't see my point. The ideal solution would be something that can be learned easily by both the dev and infra side without having to boil the ocean on one side or the other. Something like protobuf was mentioned above which is a better idea than hcl imho
aduwah··on End of 10: Upgrade your old Windows 10 computer to Linux
League is mentioned further above. That's 131 million players right there. It runs on a crap box too.

It is a fact that having an old PC AND using Linux further limits the options compared to using an old box with a windows with extended support.

I think one of the main issues with the Linux world is that people pretend that it is easy to get on the bandwagon. "The is xyz distro that makes it really simple and it is 90% the same". Well that's a lot of bull. It results in people believing you and then silently running away never to come back again.

I work with linux and mac for about 15 years and I will definitely not give up my gaming PC with windows 10 because I would lose access to some games I am playing plus there is a performance hit that would bug me to no end (which would end up putting me in a optimization loop where I spend more time tuning the PC than actually playing).

aduwah··on End of 10: Upgrade your old Windows 10 computer to Linux
It still limits the selection, especially, if someone is into competitive games which often have anticheat sitting on the kernel. Which is crap, but it is how it is
aduwah··on What would a Kubernetes 2.0 look like
Issue is that you do not want a dev learning hcl. Same as you don't want your SRE team learning next and react out of necessity.

The ideal solution would be to have an abstraction that is easy to use and does not require learning a whole new concept (especially an ugly one as hcl). Also learning hcl is simply just the tip of the iceberg, with sinking into the dependencies between components and outputs read from a bunch of workspaces etc. It is simply wasted time to have the devs keeping up with all the terraform heap that SREs manage and keep evolving under the hood. The same dev time better spent creating features.

aduwah··on End of 10: Upgrade your old Windows 10 computer to Linux
Can't play a lot of mainstream games on Linux is the issue

aduwah··on "Localhost tracking" explained. It could cost Meta €32B
Yeah and let's take away the income from the PMs and Engineers and leave the people who actually call the shots unharmed.

Once I worked at a place that actually made a calculation of how much an outage costed to the company and gave it to the engineers who resolved the issue to "think" about how bad they were.

What you propose is equally confused and wrong

aduwah··on 3 Years of Remote Work
You do you obviously, but in my opinion this is a mistake. You sacrifice a lot of personal time and your health for a work that: a. Could accommodate better time for meetings b. Cares absolutely nothing about you

I am working remote for about 10 years now. I had zero meetings after 8pm and I work with 8h diff from the US where my company is.

Having stomach issues after meetings for an extended period (even for short periods) is clearly not normal. Anxiety is a good guess or just plain exhaustion. All the "fake it until you make it" and "do the crunch now rest later" BS is just that. BS. Take it easy, your body will be grateful for it.

I just had an ex-colleague pass away at the age of 40 last week due to a heart attack. He was a gym going dude with good health even. He was not the only one in my 20 years career, just the last one. It never worth it.

aduwah··on Poaching
You can always add a no-compete clause in the contract of your employees
aduwah··on Ask HN: When do you block out time to learn new things?
As someone who is also 23 years in the trenches, I agree 100%
aduwah··on Ask HN: Why do you have to do something extra to get promoted?
You need to embrace the bullshit.

You have someone who is decent? That person is now not decent, but he is an amazing individual that inspires others and knocks the KPIs off the chart.

There, it is this easy

Promotions without leaving a company are 90% of the time just a token effort to keep an employee around anyway. Don't overthink it

aduwah··on Nitric Is Terraform for Developers
My opinion is that these tools for most companies are the perfect footguns.

How much time a developer will think about the right instance size, fine tuned IAM permissions, naming conventions or tags? I would wager a substantial amount that most will just copy-paste and get done with it, which eventually leads to the creation of a devops/sre/platform team to do the refactor and cleanup and we are back to step one.

aduwah··on Ask HN: Is there a list available of startups that will be shut down?
Every single company I've seen was reporting all green trends right until the moment they shut down. Maybe a half-hearted "it is slower than quarter x, but we do very well". No-one will give you this C-level info on HN. You have to network really well to know these in advance

aduwah··on Ask HN: What's your preferred logging stack in Kubernetes
Thanks for the article, it was useful for me. You have a typo btw: "correclty used"
aduwah··on Tau: Open-source PaaS – A self-hosted Vercel / Netlify / Cloudflare alternative
I disagree hard with this. I love kubernetes to bits, but managing complex networking issues, having proper security, or just simply rightsizing the nodes is definitely not going away with having a managed control plane.
aduwah··on Jujutsu: A Next Generation Replacement for Git
Same here, I am doing a mess between commits, copying and comparing random files, hardcoding secrets for a quick test... To think that it ends up upstream is a thing of nightmares.

I know, gitignore could help, but it eliminates the convenience of being flexible/quick&messy.

aduwah··on Remote workers using 'mouse-mover' technology are getting caught
I mean it does not require too sophisticated software to not just look for keyboard activity, but also check if the a activity is withing human limits. Having 120000 keystrokes in 1 minute probably would raise the eyebrows of anyone
